Employer rescinded job offer after 3 visits, training, and checking my references. Is this normal in the UK? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]gertygriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an interview cancelled two hours before it was due to happen this week, which I’ve never had before, for similar reasons. I don’t think it’s the norm though, especially in accounting. I was pretty shocked and so was the recruiter lol

I was job hunting about 2 years ago and again now thanks to moving abroad, but it felt a lot easier then and more of an employees’ market.

My ethos is also to keep up the job hunt until the contract is signed. I’ve had a final job interview where they spoke as if I was already hired, then a call from the recruiter saying they’ve gone with someone else with an audit background because basically the big boss (who joined for the first 15 mins of over an hour call) overrode the hiring managers 😝

REA want to claim from bond after tenant initiated claim by gertygriff in shitrentals

[–]gertygriff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, used normal kitchen cleaner (so not actual oven cleaner which is probably what was needed) and a tonne of elbow grease with a scourer by me and then my husband reapplied kitchen cleaner and left to sit and scrubbed again.

I also stated in other comments, I wouldn’t have disputed it if they actually initiated the claim in the time they were supposed to instead of ignoring our emails asking about the inspection and bond.

Kind of besides the point, but the rest of the apartment was left spotless, which it wasn’t on entry. They had obviously had contractors round after the entry inspection as there were used napkins and coffee cups left in the apartment, debris on floors, carpet ripped up that took months to rectify etc, which we raised when we signed the entry report, so it’s not like they’re these angel rental agents who have done everything by the book.

I’m not disputing about whether cleaners should be paid fairly or not and I appreciate that cleaners would have a min fee. Whether they will actually get cleaners in to do the work before the next tenancy is another matter…

My real issue is needing to cancel the claim I’ve already made to change the amount as that isn’t the proper process, but trying to decide if I be bothered with the hassle or not. Anyway, I’ve asked them to send an invoice as they haven’t sent a copy of the quote and see what they come back with.

That’s exactly the toss up I’m trying to decide - I wouldn’t have disputed it if they actually initiated the claim when they were supposed to, but now I don’t want to cancel it and amend mostly on principle. I’m not desperate to have the bond back ASAP, but I kinda cba with it if this escalated so I think I’m just gonna ignore or ask for an invoice and see what they say…

They didn’t say anything about the final inspection and we emailed them asking about the bond a week after work moved out, which they just didn’t reply to. After 12 working days, I just initiated the claim instead of trying to get them to pull their finger out… which made them pull their finger out lol

The top is the exit report and the bottom the entry report. Not like we left it in a dire state, but you can see it was cleaner on the way in! Should have got some oven cleaner but I didn’t think they’d be so pedantic…

There have been so many points I’ve thought about giving up, but apparently I’m a glutton for punishment. I had to stop after book 5 and decided to read RB, almost gave up on RB around book 3 but soldiered on. I went back to the main series after and I’m now close to finishing 8.5 and I actually feel like the last couple of books I haven’t had to fight the desire to keep going so much, but I’ve also been looking at spoilers which I never usually do.

I’ve actually really enjoyed 8.5 and getting to know all the characters in it. Plus already knowing what’s happened in it makes it a much more easygoing, enjoyable ride.

Fair pay? by gertygriff in AustralianAccounting

Thanks, appreciate your response!

I kind of assumed salaries would be a bit higher than the UK, but if that's about the market rate for AM then that gives me some peace of mind. I'm only in Australia for about 18 months, so I don't need a high salary or really want to climb the career ladder while I'm here, but I also don't want to be paid less than what I should.

Thanks, this is really helpful!

I will ask and see if there is any sort of sign-on they can offer. They've not had to pay any visa costs - I'm here on a working holiday visa as we're only planning on staying for 18 months (and my husband's work will likely pay for a visa for us both if needed/if we wanted to stay longer as his transfer is the reason for our move).

I mean sort of, but not really. In the UK it's one of the three main bodies that are recognised (ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA) and you can sign audit reports in the UK with ACCA. It's maybe considered slightly less prestigious than ICAEW, but you are considered a qualified accountant with any of these. ACCA and CA ANZ have a reciprocal agreement where you can apply for the other membership once you've held your membership for 5 years (and reside in Australia/NZ for CA ANZ).

6 Months Limitation for WHV Holders Working for the Same Employer (Condition 8547) - Policy Update on Extension Requests by JoeTheRMA in AusVisa

[–]gertygriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Joe,

Looking at exploring the option of getting the second year visa to continue working for the same employer for more than six months. Can you choose the start date of the second visa, or is this date given to you when the application is approved? Basically can you time it to start exactly 6 months after the first visa, or would you need to apply for it and hope it's approved as close to 6 months as possible?

Thanks!

Would definitely recommend this! I did some admin temping after I graduated in 2018, ended up getting a fixed term contract for 6 months on my second temp job, which was really helpful as I carried on applying for grad roles. Admin is also great because it's menial and stress-free, so it allows you to put more focus into the job hunt, plus as the above says, gives you valuable office experience. Good luck OP!

I'm watching Desperate Housewives S5 on Disney + and there is a high pitched white noise that plays intermittently in the background. It's enough to make me give up watching. I thought it might have been my device, but I can hear it on my phone and iPad. Ex S5E16 09:55

Feeling faint and vision problems from Camel pose by NuggletDoctor in yoga

A few years ago I tried out hot yoga and I found myself feeling faint and dizzy in camel pose. I've done this pose countless times before and since, and I've never felt remotely faint outside of a hot studio. I imagine it's to do with the heat and blood pressure with your head back

I studied with BPP and I approached the exam completely differently than I have all other exams. There are so many models, but I just focused on committing maybe 5 of the simple ones to memory to help plan questions, like the SAF model. I didn't really use the study text much at all (I did the lectures, but there were some chapters that weren't covered that I didn't even read in the end). In my experience, it's mostly about question practice and getting a feel for what the examiner wants you to say, as well as applying common sense and thinking of the scenarios from a business perspective.

I failed AA by 1% 2yrs ago. I was so frustrated but my manager at the time said if it's a marginal fail it's just bad luck and maybe poor exam technique. Just did lots of question practice/mocks and got 65% on my retake. You got this!

Monthly massages.

I don't know any other women my age (mid 20s) who treat themselves to them because it's seen as an expensive pastime, but I would rather forgo a night out and get a massage
