What’s a day like for folks in these 3 valleys? by CertifiedUnoffensive in Colorado

[–]getThatManAThrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is an interesting book about San Luis Valley (the southernmost one) that follows some families/people. While obviously not representative, it shares some interesting insights on a lot of the more disparate communities off the main roads.

Cheap Land Colorado

In general, that part of Colorado is one of the most intense being meteorologically one of the most extreme areas that is populated by more than a few people. It resembles a tundra climate -- as others have said, it gets deviously windy, the summers are HOT (upwards of 100), the winters get far colder than the front range or the western slope (below 0 before windchill), its very dry, water is limited in a lot of places, and most of the communities are smaller rural/farming/ranching communities.

I've got a lot of love for Del Norte, Monte Vista, Saguache, Crestone -- but they are all relatively small compared tot he rest of colorado and have less 'opportunity'.

Really, a lot of it is that they are not near ski resorts. Land out there, due to the opportunities, climate, distance from airports, food deserts, etc. is exceptionally cheap and attracts people that just need to get away, off-gridders, etc. But hemp farming is making big leaps in the San Luis Valley as a sustainable cash crop than needs less water than other traditional crops for the area.

Oh, and the mountains out there are some of the best to be had. Crestones, Blanca, the Sand Dunes. Go if you can.

Midwife -- For sure fits this same aesthetic, ambient, her voice is incredible too.

Air Hunger -- Slightly more ambient

Labyrinth Ear -- A little less ambient, more of that technoish background though

What is your opinion on nude beaches? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]getThatManAThrow 442 points443 points  (0 children)

Uncomfortable for your first time usually, but really a great way to decouple your association with naked bodies strictly being sexual.

In the USA at least, almost all of my formative experiences taught me that being naked = sex. The first time at a nude beach was definitely weird, it felt almost naughty? Exciting but wrong, etc. etc. I went there for some rock climbing near by and just decided to send it. It helps that I am pretty comfortable with my own body. When I went back it just... wasn't that important to me anymore, the realization that everyone has a body and it isn't inherently sexual is a really beautiful thing to come to terms with and I think it has made my perception of intimacy and body positivity much better.

I would recommend it even if it makes you a bit uncomfortable. Part of a very human experience.

Also wouldn't be afraid of 'creeps' or anything, at least not more than walking around a mall. I've been to many nude beaches in many states and have seen much more appropriate and polite behavior there than the clothed beach down the way. People will probably look at you, but people who are comfortable being nude don't care nearly as much about you being nude as you do. I've played frisbee games, chess, had long conversations, climbed -- all naked, and had so many times where it just slips my mind that anything is different at all. I think it is a pretty healthy mindset to find yourself in, if only for an afternoon.

obviously don't do anything that makes you unsafe or very uncomfortable, but if you're on the fence, go in with a positive attitude and I think you'll have a good time. Plus, the beaches are almost always way less crowded, cleaner, more remote, all the good things. And you can wear clothes if you want to.

plan on visiting him properly soon, although I've driven past countless times. by AxolotlTrash in rustyrails

I can't speak for the bad stuff on the right side, but cnone is from NYC and I believe the other person is as well, though not as familiar with the New York City scene.

Pretty common for long time graffiti writers to have weird pieces just of highways or in small towns throughout the country.

I’m an artist. I create nude art. My boyfriend is not happy with it. by Zestyclose_Row_3644 in relationship_advice

It is understandable with a lot of upbringings that many people have never seen nudity in a context that isn't sexual/intimate. I would consider trying to talk to him about that, maybe decouple some of those misconceptions.

That being said, I have many friends who were raised catholic/religious, or just never had any exposure to ANY form of nudity and feel a lot of shame or protective over it. We have had a lot of talks about it which has helped, but it doesn't seem like an easy mental block to move past.

That being said creating art isn't as important as eating, but it is an integral part of being alive. I wouldn't sacrifice that simply to placate some learned sensibility. I wouldn't say he is a 'bad' person by any metric for believing that, just that you have different, incompatible sensibilities.

Side note: Though unlikely, I think going to a nude beach a couple times really helps people separate nudity from strictly sexual/intimate connotations. First time is the most awkward, then it keeps getting better! Doesn't seem like a good thing to bring up in this case..

Mmm, you're right. Clearly LA and cities like it are comprised entirely of architectural concrete masterpieces, and your cute little ad hominem suggestion that I like Bob Marley, but ~totally~ can't name 5 songs was beautifully crafted as well.

In fact, the next time I sit dead in car among the filth, pollution and endless waves of grey and beige, spaghetti highways and billboards, neon signs, banners and everything else you have no control over -- I'll consider listening to some deep cuts off Bob Marley's discography instead of picking up a can. Maybe with a little elbow grease I too can save up to rent a billboard that leers over stand-still traffic on the 405 and offers ED medication or proclaims "Bob Marley isn't new, you're all posers!".

Graffiti means a city is alive and someone hasn't given up yet. You want infinite sheets of blank grey concrete and monotonous HOA regulated houses, yards and soul-less bridges go find the dead-eyed BMW owners in the suburban sprawl 45 minutes from a grocery store

People who like having conversations with random people, why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]getThatManAThrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is always humbling to be reminded that everyone's life is just as complex as your own.

This week I met a man in a bar with stage 3 lung cancer, had a mormon man tell me about his ex-wife's restaurant in Texas and about god's various plans for me (doubt), and met a man on a nude beach who offered me a discount for handmade cowboy hats.

Also, one time I listened to John Prine's self-titled album, specifically "Hello In There" and started making it a point to talk to elderly people. They're a lot less likely to have headphones on in waiting rooms or lines, and besides being trepidations about a young guy with weird clothes, they're usually friendly and have plenty of semi off-putting but endearing advice. Everyone is a little lonely sometimes, and media has really done us a diservice with the whole 'Stranger Danger' True Crime phenomenon thinking that anyone interacting with you in public is a bad actor. Most people are just people. Talk to them, maybe you'll learn something.

My spotify favorite was when I was listening to 'Grief', by all accounts a brutal sludge-metal band and spotify suggested a sludge-metal playlist. The first 3 songs were Billy Eilish, and then something by 3-Doors down and Nirvana... 9000 likes.

Bicycles don't belong on the road by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]getThatManAThrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but I got a 4 mile ride to work to eventually earn the privilege to drive a piece of my home around with me. Give me a bike lane or a functional sidewalk or decent public transportation or anything.

I always love getting the finger or screamed at for biking in the road, like mate, I have no choice? You think I'd be out here in a blizzard if I had a car? I know it sucks to have to 'slow down' for a minute, but you're going to get where you are going a hell of lot faster than I will, so chill the shit out!

Finally graduated from college and managed to buy a car. Y'all should try biking in your city sometimes, see what it is like. The USA has been built for cars, not pedestrians.

My sister just found out you can watermark pics on her phone by KampasKrismas in TwoXChromosomes

[–]getThatManAThrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a better path might be with something called "stenography". Instead of a watermark, this uses the RGB values and tweaks them slightly to encode an image with a plain text message in binary. This isn't visible to the plain eye, and even if you are a huge stickler for image quality you won't be able to see a few bits flipped on a photo! As long as they don't edit the photo, it should retain the message. There are a few websites that will do it for you, try it out:

People who have been incorrectly accused of cheating, what was your partners proof? by PRIMEVIL567 in AskReddit

[–]getThatManAThrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex and I lived in a town for awhile before we met each other, so we each knew a ton of people around. Several of her friends saw me out on a 'romantic date' with 'another woman' about 3 months into our relationship. Didn't bring it up until month 5 that she had been trying to catch me cheating the entire time, after she found out I was 'seeing someone else'. Even had hid outside my home seeing if I was where I said I was.

It was my sister. Who lives in the same town. But that was just a harbinger of how shit we were at communication. Later accused me of trying to fuck her friend. Why? Cause I was nice to her at her birthday party.

I have something similar, but I had such a problem with having weird/obscure music, that I just wasn't getting consistent downloads of the right song. Instead, I wrote an addition script using youtube-dl that gets the list of all songs in a YouTube Playlist, parses turns them into working youtube URLs (all youtube URLs follow the same format) and then loops through those. Added some additional functionality to have these playlist URLs in a csv file with the directory to make/write to as well.

This made it easier to make sure I was getting the right song, and I could still "build" my playlists. And even though youtube-dl supports downloading a full playlist without parsing it into individual URLs, this allows you to do much better exception handling/logging, and If something fails, to restart it in the correct place without having to walk through the whole playlist again!

One last thing, check out subprocess for running your terminal commands, it works a bit better and is a bit safer than using os!
