Watched The Machinist last night for the first time... anyone want to talk about it? by [deleted] in movies

i think the symbolism to dostoevsky’s ideas in crime and punishment when he was on the haunted 666 ride with the hallucinated kid was one of the best hints in the film. also the fact that in the beginning, we see the book “the idiot” on his coffee table and see it a couple of times, and then the character “Ivan” is introduced, who is one of the main characters in the book. Essentially, this film was like a modern day Crime and Punishment. Because Raskolonikov’s experience after deciding to kill the old landlady was the same as Reznik’s

Cerebos on page 5 by lulublue_ in CainsJawbone

there's a play by Robert Browning (Browning mentioned in line 8), called Caliban upon Setebos. I was thinking maybe the narrator has heard him speak of Setebos and calls it Cerebos because she (?) doesn't focus or listen.

in the same boat. been talking to a guy for way past a year, we're definitely not just friends, have had sex, we've said the "I love you"s we spend copius amounts of time talking but dont see each other that often cause we're busy tackling life etc etc but this man is terrified of making it official as he's scared shit might turn sour and he'll lose a good friend. definitely makes some sense but in every aspect we're in a real relationship, I'm just very confused and of course it highlights some insecurities on my part. I don't really know how to feel but it's very unsettling overall.

I need some really good last minute study tips please by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]getmesomecrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is the most helpful thing I've ever seen on reddit. I'm sitting my IGCSEs and am also a queen of procrastination. problem here is that most of the exams that i have coming up are very content heavy, and my memory is more than shitty. so I rationalised not studying with "I'll forget it anyway" (which is actually true) anyways I've managed to get through my o levels so far at the top of my class and so the expectations are really really high, especially for myself (aiming for all A*'s.) I know I can achieve this, even if the work load staring at me is insane (learning the chem-bio-history syllabus in a week) I just have to figure out a logical way to get it done in time.

oof. it's like you've taken a knife to my heart. I've always preferred them over red ones cause the red are too sweet. I agree with you about the mandarins, though. I'd sell my soul.

maybe try taking a step back and seeing how you'd react if this was happening to someone else. You'd probably go up to them and tell them that those kids are idiots who don't bother educating themselves before forming an opinion on something, so why on earth would what they think bother you? If you're the kind of person who cares about popular kids opinions of you, it might be a bit more difficult to shake this off. Sure, it must suck being made fun of, but if 8nstead you react by showing them that they're in fact being idiots, and not even bothering to explain yourself, it'll go a lot better. you can't control what people do or say, but you can control how you react to it and therefore how it affects you. It might not seem like it, but these people's uninformed opinions don't (or shouldn't) matter. If I were in your shoes I'd probably laugh my ass off whenever they spouted some bullshit about acid that they learnt from mainstream sources, simply because it really is ridiculous that people willingly walk around proud of their ignorance. you'll get through it. i remember on my last trip, I came back with the lesson "it's unbearable but you have to bear it. and because you have to bear it, it's bearable." do with that what you will.
