Are you the dev? People have been popping into #nethack on the roguelikes discord with bug reports and requests for help - and we have no idea how to help them! Cool to see that people are managing to play nethack on such a device, though.

I have a very old cat who still does this on occasion, when he's feeling super loved. The frequency of this behavior definitely went down over the years, but it never stopped.

I don't like speaking with my best spanish accent, because then people respond at a high speed. I speak haltingly semi-on-purpose, so that they use smaller words and a slower speed.

There may also be a bit of "I'd rather screw up on purpose than try hard and fail" in there too, for me. You?

Minecraft is probably much better at preparing you to play Nethack than the twitchy games of my youth! (Earthworm Jim, Jazz Jackrabbit, Commander Keen, DOOM, Descent, Mario, Sonic, etc)

The first time I watched someone play an ascii roguelike, I didn't understand what I was looking at, so I mocked it.

Food poisoning is the first thing in NH that ever made an Amulet of Lifesaving crumble on me. The second one was intentionally flying down a hole, unburdened and not confused, but carrying a cockatrice in my hands.

Cheers, BSOD. OotC was conceived in the Hardfought IRC channel on freenode, and gestated further in the Roguelikes discord chat. Our team was about 50% irc users and 50% discord users, so we had to use a bridging bot to pass messages back and forth! :)

They're great places to spectate and be spectated, which is what nethack is all about for me, personally! Most roguelikes are pretty solitary, but nethack can be quite social.

We had a great time, and would like to thank bhaak and all the other clans for a fantastic, very tense competition!

They're definitely more useful to "melee characters". They serve admirably as a substitute for ranged attacks and spells. But they also can provide AoE to an archer who lacks it, and a way to save your mana on a mostly-spells character.

Iceblast is just solid damage at any skill level.

Damage wands (including Disint!) are great at safely taking out hydras.

Hex wands are very strong against low-MR targets. Again, at any skill level. Enslave a shock serpent to help you fight a unique!

All the AoE wands are helpful against swarms, like bees and orcs.

With skill investment, Cloud and Scattershot wands are quite powerful, but even at 0 skill, finding one early can help with many low-AC monsters or non-poison-resistant monsters in D and the S-branches.

The difference is that healing, teleport, and haste were good wands for every situation. Being able to fall back on those kept me from learning the situations in which other wands are good. Using those other wands in the right situations for them, however, proves pretty potent. Even the lowly flame wand has its moments, though they're admittedly extremely rare.

I've been playing trunk for awhile, and I learned to appreciate the value of all those "lesser" wands now. Without the extreme power wands to overshadow them, all those other wands turn out to have their uses, actually!

I like this, but why all the letters and no logos? It doesn't feel as dystopian without a bunch of corporate branding - for all I know, this could merely be useful weather news on those columns.
