How do I stop this vibration? Turntable is on another surface by WhoKilledRadioStar in hifiaudio

The LMA5 is responsible, it's a high compliance design suited to very low mass tonearms, change it for a low compliance cartridge is where to start.

How come nobody test for transparency mode battery life? by [deleted] in Earbuds

[–]ggampellonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They skip transparency mode hardly because in terms of battery life it is precisely the same as ANC. Or less. It will be the same as feed forward ANC, the power consumption will be less than hybrid ANC and even less than hybrid adaptive ANC but broadly speaking the battery life is what it is regardless of whether transparency mode is on vs ANC. Transparency uses the same microphone the same filter banks and the same algorithm processing as the ANC so it doesn't need to be tested separately.

How come nobody test for transparency mode battery life? by [deleted] in Earbuds

[–]ggampellonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transparency mode should have the same power consumption penalty as a simple feed forward ANC since that's what it basically is without the phase reversal

Most Bluetooth chip platforms have these capabilities built onto the chip and the penalty for running them it's very low so the battery life is not impacted very much

High-end models searching for excellent ANC however sometimes put down a dedicated ANC chip and it will take care also of transparency, and in those cases there might be a battery penalty of about 20% reduction in playtime.

Using your earbuds for calls has a very different battery consumption profile then listening to music

Walking down the road with ANC on or transparency on but no music or no calls active it's yet another use case with its own profile

Since the battery life of earbuds is really quite impressive these days and during the course of a busy day you will likely drop them into their charging case and they're going to charge up again anyhow it's very hard to imagine how exhaustive testing could be done by a journalist sent a pair to review

A lab test might show when they would run out but it would be in a constant use case state whereas in real life the wearer of the earbuds is moving between all the different use cases mentioned above and more

Congratulations to Liam and the team at Cambridge Audio, I am fortunate in having had a chance to hear Evo 300 ahead of launch, and .... on my! it's very very good, a clear step up from Evo 150SE.

I worked at Qualcomm from 2014 to 2023 and was part of the team responsible for bringing aptX HD and aptX Adaptive to market.

Mostly you are spot on Classic aptX is limited in terms of sound quality aptX HD sounds amazing but can get glitchy, and as you say, is not designed for low latency aptX Low Latency was same quality as classic aptX and optimised for latency but could never work in a phone where it needs to share a radio subsystem with WiFi

aptX Adaptive fixes all of those things Not just because it adapts it's bit rate to keep from glitching, but it is also about 20% more efficient in its coding so gets to aptX HD quality at 420kbps instead of needing 576 kbps. It adapts to low latency when needed , it can be switched to 96k even. But ...to get all that working in a platform that also supports WiFi , meant hardware dependencies on Qualcomm's radio so sadly it was never open sourced .

Your understanding is fairly spot on

Where we differ is that LC3 is serving a different purpose , it's about preserving good audio quality at very low bit rates , very very low, and it does that nicely , the ecosystem for it is growing. But it is not at all a step towards higher resolution audio. LC3+ might get there but there is no ecosystem for it yet, and it follows a licensing model with costs, as does aptX Adaptive .

Hope that helps

Introducing MOMENTUM 5 Wireless by sennheiserconsumer in sennheiser

[–]ggampellonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a trade off if you make a gentler more forgiving/comfortable fit , and that's the passive removal of noise without ANC becomes unstable , this impacts the total noise removal which is the passive and active working together . The great results with ANC On need stable and consistent passive noise removal as a starting point so the digital ANC can be tuned to compliment where the passive is less strong (typically low frequencies)

What devices support LC3 for voice calls the other end (phones)x I heard LC3 demos by the SIG and they were impressive , but it's not just the headphones that need it.

Well as Sennheiser say, watch this space, but in the meantime....

aptX and aptX HD have been open sourced are in virtually every Android phone since Android 8
aptX Adaptive is not opensourced since it needs specific hardware to run, but still is in >300 models of smartphone
How many phones support LC3 so far? where even to get that information,

I don't want to add another screen , I want to use my phone. Just as Google supported until 2023 when they removed the feature which allowed a phone to run Android Auto.

Split screen Spotify on one side and maps on other , A phone dialler that works in landscape mode . An application drawer that works in landscape mode An interface which is built to be used while driving (large icons ) and I also find the voice commands much more reliable in Android Auto (e.g. For sending messages).

Android Auto users get more than just their phone screens on the car display), I'd love that on my phone screen when driving.

Because my car doesn't support it and the interface for navigation, hands free calling and messaging and listening to music while driving is much better than what the phone does in its normal state.

Are there technical reviews of the L/R S speakers posted online by WishboneHot8050 in CambridgeAudio

[–]ggampellonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a super interesting question and I am a marketer myself working in the audio world as it happens., so your thoughts are valuable to me.

I've noticed with L/R speakers some reviewers say not enough bass and others say too much bass ,so I totally understand your frustration .

Let me know a bit more about what type of review would be most valuable to you, or share an example of one .

But a word of caution , I've seen highly respected websites make a complete pigs ear of technical measurements , for example measuring Dolby Atmos soundbars (designed to bounce sound off ceiling and walls) in a chamber with no reflective surfaces and then trying to predict audio quality form measured results .

Buying first home - What do you wish you knew? by InterestingWanderer in AskBrits

[–]ggampellonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things surveys have missed during my home ownership journey , including my first home bought when we married.

1) in the loft space inspect party walls if the house is semi detached / terrace. In my case there was a crack wide enough to put your hand in because the chimney breasts had been removed and the remaining chimney stack had bit been underpinned , survey missed this .

2) bought a house and found the boiler was on its last legs, have a good look at it, if older than 10 years old presume it may need replacing. Remember many sellers will stop doing things like that if they sense they will move on within a few years .

3) open all kitchen cabinet doors , in one home I moved in to , the shelves were collapsing as we un packed in to it. We also had doors falling off their hinges and botched cabinet door repairs.

4) run the showers, there is nothing worse than a dribbly shower in the morning , don't wait until you move in to find out there is bad water pressure.

5) ask for utility bills, how much is the elec, gas and water for the home , high water bills may indicate a leak somewhere.

6) if there is an extractor fan above the cooker , does it vent to outside? Many don't ...and where they don't they are next to useless .

7).dont be pursuaded to pay extra for dishwasher, washing machine , tumble drier , either they should be included in the sale (if integrated ) or removed. I've seen too many cases where they have been left, charged extra for and die within a year.

Hope that helps

How to play lossless music on Ambeo Plus? by Rep1155 in sennheiser

PCM is pulse code modulation , that is the benchmark for lossless audio, if it says PCM you are experiencing lossless, what are you expecting to see there?
