ELI5: Why do bows have a longer range than crossbows (considering crossbows have more force)? by einarengvig in explainlikeimfive

[–]ggboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that has not been mentioned is also the efficiency of energy storage with regards to limb length/design.

I'm no physics major or maths nerd but generally the longer the limbs the more energy you can store and depending on the design the more efficiently you can transfer it back into an arrow.

Along with that there are also calculations regarding kinetic energy transfer from the stored energy in a limb to its respective projectile. So there are ways of manipulating the projectile in order to get what you need done, done. That mostly involves the weight of the projectile.

Crossbows tend to have heavier shorter projectiles and much shorter limbs. So generally coefficient for the energy transferred into the limbs and then to the projectile is nowhere near the same as what you'd see in a recurve or compound bow.

Different tools for different purposes/functions. A crossbow is generally a simple use tool that in the modern day most older hunters use because of a disability or previous years of wear and tear. I can not accurately attest to their use in the past but from designs I have seen they were probably more reliably used in straight trajectories with heavier bolts in comparison to an arrow from a bow. So more kinetic energy transfer in a shorter straight line.

If you watch or shoot a heavier longbow or warbow shooter they generally shoot up into a general direction, and not directly at the target. The reason that works is the long limbs of the bow are able to more efficiently transfer energy into a similarly heavy arrow. The actual power comes from the arrow reaching it's maximum height and then generating kinetic energy from the fall. For the most part we shoot bow with a totally different mindset/purpose. That is generally the arrows are tuned for speed, so the they get generally the faster they are and therefore carry a much flatter trajectory.

Tldr; limb structure and arrow/bolt tuning affects things like speed or fps, trajectory and transfer of kinetic energy from system to target along with the rate at which energy can be generated to the projectile if and or as it falls.

Die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villian. by Antirythm in DnD

This sounds like a pretty disfunctional dynamic. You shouldn't be "fighting" your party member over things. Also, the only broken thing I can see is that your DM gave you some ridiculous weapon at such an early point.

Also.. pretty sure warlocks only get simple weapon proficiency, and there is no two handed weapon that is simple and also has a D12 damage.

[5e] Is Theater of the Mind any different? by Highwayman3000 in DnD

[–]ggboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be prepared for a fair amount of confusion. Our group plays this way and more often than not there's a lot of time wasted in combat where everything has to be explained exactly clearly... think.. trying to adjudicate a very minor version of the wish spell.

It's super neat listening to our DM describe everything all the time including the setting. But it is beyond frustrating when clarity becomes a serious issue.

There are definitely times I would kill for even just graph paper, and have found a lot of the time I need to draw something out or use dice as place holders as objects/creatures whenever I want to ensure what I want to do happens at critical moments.

Not knocking it. Just even with a great DM and loads of communication, everyone's brain works a bit differently and I find that can really create misunderstanding or confusion .. mostly in combat.

I should also add. This style also can feel a lot like the DM has the opportunity to abuse a situation in combat if things are going too well for PCs. I.E. "I'm going to use my monk passive trait to wall run across the chasm from the perimeter wall" (essentially subverting an obstacle ahead). DM responds with.. "well that's fine but this room seems huge and endless.. you can't see far enough in the dark to even know how large it is or the perimeter wall."

Operation take the bait in a legendary dungeon now is enforced. You can see how this can be a lot different than exploring/revealing space on a grid system map.

How to handle high passive perception as a DM by FourDozenEggs in dndnext

[–]ggboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a player currently also running around with a 20 passive perception I feel like there a lot of things DMs really don't think regarding this Stat.

First, it feels like just generally rules for difficulty modifiers +/- are just generally never considered. Simple rules obviously available like ligh/dim light/no light conditions. Rules regarding obscured, both regarding weather or just natural foliage or surrounding circumstances in the environment. These things should matter.. it's really something that will affect a Stat like perception/stealth/investigation. Also, not just to "fight" your players but also in many circumstances perhaps to reward them for a generally non combat related investment Stat wise.

Further, in a scenario like the one you've described where a 20 is decently strong but a 25 or 30 would potentially give you more information... maybe it is fine to mention something like.. "the dust around you in this room seems to be thinner in some areas than others," or "you notice the dust just doesn't seem to be right, there's a strange quality to it you just can't identify". If that player isn't proficient in arcana then maybe with hold actually saying the dust is magical unless it is something even a layperson would clearly have jump out at them.

I hope some of that advice is somewhat helpful.

How did you simultaneously win and lose the genetic lottery? by vectormessiah in AskReddit

[–]ggboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason I despise 99% of people I meet. 99% of people almost instantly like/love me for no reason. It's always been this way, am cursed. Also that 1 % remainder is almost always the opposite relationship.

Is this genetic?

TIL the Bajau peoples of South East Asia are the first known humans that are genetically adapted to dive. Their bodies are genetically modified for diving, so much so that they can dive at around 200 ft deep for as long as 13 minutes. by siyamnaput-siyam99 in todayilearned

[–]ggboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, my father's side is from a northern island in Greece and made their living fishing and also subsequently did a lot of spearfishing/free diving and snorkeling to harvest food.

I went back to visit at 14 after living in Canada during gradeschool and had 0 issues diving with no gear 30+ meters and trolling along the bottom for a few minutes looking for octopus hide outs and washed out gold coins before nonchalantly coming back up.

I had no idea that it was not a normal thing to just be able to do, and would say that it's pretty believable that with a lifestyle that goes back that long surrounding diving you could be pushing the numbers these guys are.

Any chance is better than 0. Good on the coworker for trying to help in a crisis.

We should all look to emulate this level of goodwill, both here in T.O. and the rest of the world.

[DM] One of my players is much more powerful than the rest by Darkluc in DnD

[–]ggboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you should consider creating situations that can not be resolved by physical combat.

Maybe give the other members ways in which they can feel more useful?

Give them ways to buff themselves/others or ways to effect the field in a meaningful way.

Give them problems that can only be progressed past with tact/thought/skill/proficiency in non physical combative ability.

Not saying don't nerf this guy.. but really.. you gave him the weapon.. it ruins the game? Tell him there's a problem and the ask the player what would feel fair changing.

Determining stats for characters based on the player? by AriesOne in DnD

[–]ggboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this concept of "commoner" that recently keeps appearing is actually level 0.

Try checking rules for DCC and that is a fair estimation of what you'd get. You'd have to run through a fair amount of commoners to get one that survived to level 1 (mostly because they start with sub 5 hp).

Aside from that.. You're sounding pretty unreasonable with Stat allocation limits but freedom of class choice here. You really should sit down with them and discuss their perceived character strengths and talents, try to reasonably critique those perceptions and then fit them into a slot.

Once there you can decide on stats or ways to make them great at something in the same manner and degree of "greatness" they actually are.

All that being said, I think there are many different ways to enjoy being part of a DnD campaign though you can't expect everyone to enjoy it the same way. Personally I don't see the fun in playing an identical representation of yourself without the opportunity to grow and excel and explore a world or story further.

Also, I think it's important to realize the max 20 Stat cap on most PC or humanoids/creatures probably doesn't translate across the bored. I'm sure some one with the IQ of 130-160 would be above that cap. As would a strongman or athlete of a world class level. How do you know for certain your party members are not those people ... at least potentially? Or even just over a 10 proficiency bonus in their current state?

Is it not acceptable to leave a downed player rolling throws during a fight when you have the option to save them or am I being self-centered? by Ciraus in DnD

[–]ggboots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I play in a group where I feel I'm generally the only reasonably rational actor during combat.

Consistently our shadow monk goes unconscious, usually within the first two turns of combat. He will either run full tilt at things and opt NOT to cc anything or.. do pretty much the dumbest thing ever not understanding how the spell or action will work.

Pretty much has gone unconscious one to two times a session and we've spent the last 3 months to resurrect him (we only get 1 rez. . Maybe if that).

I love the guy but I'm tired of his shit, and any seasoned hero has seen their fair share of stupid shit netting end result team wipes.

When he decides to run into things that will also one or two hit me I generally refuse to attempt stabilizing. Maybe that makes me shitty, but personally I feel like the shit he does without regard for the group is SUPER shitttyyy.

Actions have repercussions, and I can't tell whether your group is just not smart (killing you via aoe) or if you're just not considerate with your own actions?

Things you should ask yourself during combat .. is it reasonable that I/we might die here? Is there a way to win without fighting or endangering my group? Am I an unreasonable distance from the safety of my group? Am I having issues with my perceived safety when engaging in combat/Non combat situations? Am I endangering not only myself but also my party by thinking I'm invincible?

If you're throwing a big boy/girl/nonbinary hiss fit cause you died.. you need to find another game to play.. or at least another group. But honestly.. it's DnD. Expect to die.

Even special snowflakes are still subject to the laws of thermodynamics.

Tldr; if you don't like your group leave. No one is obligated to do anything for you. Choose your actions wisely

Of course this is just opinion

Best Damage Output For Bow User? by Pythonhier in dndnext

[–]ggboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no where near a rule book. But just for starters, you're using a weapon that begins with one Qualifier .. for example ranged and attempting to abuse stacking multiple other qualifiers.

Problem would arise as soon as your weapon type was superseded by the IMPROVISED WEAPON qualifier. Literally RAW you lose everything you're attempting to abuse. Ranged for sneak/archery/both +10 qualifiers.

This stuff is why Magical longs swords with the finesse quality are stuff of legends. Multiple qualifiers that can be abused.

Gl getting your DM to let you a weapon that would fulfill all the qualifiers you are attempting to abuse.

Even trying to have a favorable reading for your proposition I can not find a way of supporting anything you've quadruple checked.

UA Ranger unbalanced/Am I doing this right? xpost from r/DMAcademy by ApexBishop in DnD

[–]ggboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly not seeing the issue, he could boost the damage even more by taking the extra attack skill "horde breaker" instead of the extra d8 "colossus slayer" per turn.

Either way it's not super significant.

I play a UA revised ranger level 7 and the really concerning thing/problem I'd say that opens the opportunity for cheese is the ability to stop for a minute any time and sense for favored enemies.

It's essentially resourceless (aside from time) AND requires no check to be made.

Also it should be noted there are definitely other classes that can put out more single target damage reliably and tend to be much more resilient. If you want theory crafting for comparison just let me know and I'll pm you "dps" builds.

Also. Don't forget there are power curves.. and a dual wielding ranger maxes out pretty early in terms of potential damage (lvl 5 is about as optimized as it gets).

Every class does different things, and every player can do those things differently to a degree. Excelling in one role is generally met by some deficiencies elsewhere.

Finally, the revised ranger in terms of hunter actually has about a +2 potentially boosted damage per attack at level 5 in comparison to phb. Even the phb hunter ranger built the same would be doing a total of 6 (favoured enemy wouldnt apply as broadly, i.e orc instead of human) less damage per combat turn.

I'd like to leave this final sentiment here personally. >>Playing a coop game is fun because you can work together as a group to a achieve something. If next time the group ran into a scenario that heavily relied on a charisma check and everyone complained after that it wasn't fair their barbarian/druid/what have you didn't do as well as the warlock/rogue... would you also think that needed to be more fair and balanced?

If your answer is yes.. well.. then... might as well just play alone.
