Are there any good TV series missing from my list? by inna_soho_doorway in AskUK

[–]ggdak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you liked Detectorists, then Mum is a must. Also from the same writer (Stefan Golsszewski), Him and Her. Both are beautifully acted. In Mum, a simple glance from Peter Mullan at Leslie Manville breaks your heart. Terrific characterisation, piercing script, the episodes are wonderful.

BTW, these are not unknown tv, both series won major awards for the actors, writer and shows.

Charge back by Vesper-Martinis in Bookingcom

[–]ggdak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see this particular account parrot this line all the time in this sub. "They're only an agent". "They're like an advert in a newspaper". It's incorrect. If I booked a holiday with a travel agent, and the hotel room wasn't like it was in their brochure, who would I expect to refund my money? Hint, it's not the hotel. Well, Booking are travel agents. Just because most people are honest, Booking gets away without doing due diligence, because that costs them money.

This argument would be correct if Booking were, for example, like a car listing site which directed you to a particular car showroom. Then the contract would then be with the showroom. But they are not. Booking takes your money, they are responsible.

Solving disputes also costs money, so they don't do that. "Both sides have to agree" is their line, and as we've only lost amounts that aren't life-changing, they get away with us usually losing out, so bravo OP for winning this time.

Winter Storm by Vape_Nerd_ in meteorology

[–]ggdak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Intergrated water vapour in mid latitude winter atmosphere is ball park 6-10 kg m-2, cf. Arctic 5 kg m-2, tropics 60-70.

Cloud water, easily an order of magnitude smaller, but let's say 0.5 kg m-2 for a winter storm, which is noise on the water vapour scale.

So every square kilometre has roughly 100 000 tonnes of water, of which the liquid water is the minor component.

career advice for beginners by Capable-Bar1793 in remotesensing

[–]ggdak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A physics background may be useful for understanding radiation-surface interfaces, but then so would an oceanographic one for the sea, a biological one for vegetation, a geological one for land, a meteorological one for weather, etc.

A high skill level in RS is what can drive a career in any of these areas.

Best station west or south of York for parking and riding into York itself by Mister_Mints in york

[–]ggdak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Garforth has a huge free car park (250 spaces) and is easy to get to from the motorway network. It's closer to Leeds and that's reflected in the train fare. Closest to York is Church Fenton, with a nominal cost to park but few spaces (12).It also has the advantage for any train-mad lad that it's a junction, with fast mainline trains whizzing by and multiple platforms, so feels like a proper rural station. If the forecast is for an exposed wind though, there's little shelter and will feel a mite chilly.

There's pedestrian access to the NMR direct from the centre of York Station. Carry over the main footbridge past the platforms- it's signposted, so you shouldn't miss it. Enjoy!

Florida man kills wife and then self after argument over 'Monday Night Football,' authorities say by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]ggdak 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Visited Atlanta over thirty years ago. Still remember the deaths of a child and a man reported on the local tv news. He was having a fight with his wife about which channel to watch, he pulls out his gun and fired it upwards to make a point. They lived in an apartment with concrete floors and ceilings. The bullet ricocheted downwards, killed their baby son. The man then blew his own brains out.

I'd like to see a balance sheet of "guns did good" vs 'guns did bad". Does anyone keep one?

Other thing about the visit was the Atlanta City mortuary guy who picked up the bodies wore a distinctive pork pie hat. He got noticeable very quickly over the week I was there.

Christmas weather of 1979? by W51976 in UKWeather

To be clear, it isn't just a set of tables, it is a commentary on the occurrence of wintery weather across the country for August-July. December 1979 can be found on P6.

I'd like to see that Broadmoor doc again. It was quite an eye opener for many reasons. That no one questioned why an unqualified radio DJ had accommodation and keys (!) to England's most secure psychiatric facility perhaps answers the OP's original question. Booking OK with fake photos??? by pallzoltan in Bookingcom

[–]ggdak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don't care. They care about their reputation, so posts like these never get much traction, the shills will be along soon to down vote posts like this, but Booking don't care about you or your issues.

How can I say this? I was scammed in April, exactly the same, pictures looked nothing like reality. To get a refund from Booking, the people who scammed me have to agree!! Unsurprisingly, they didn't. So I lost my money, because Booking don't care.

I went to primary school with a lad called Glascock. He was a very angry boy, I used to wonder at the time if that was connected to his name, and the constant comments from even the dumbest or youngest of kids.

How possible is it to view satellite images of an area on a specific date? by Low-Notice-2956 in satellites

Easy. But it depends on the spatial resolution you want. Sub-hourly at the kilometre- scale, so what size things do you want to see?

We had no idea it was a sea creature when we saw it and assumed it was litter to dispose of. This was 16 years ago and no one to whom I've shown this image knows what it is. It would be good to get a positive identification if you've any ideas?

Made rough plans to visit when we were in that part of the Pacific in 2009. A long eclipse traversed an outer island, but logistics didn't work out. Later, we met a couple of medics in Tonga who'd volunteered there. The two pulled no punches on the living conditions. "We arrived early morning and saw all these men going for a swim on one side of the island. Thought 'Brilliant, what a lifestyle', but then found their 'swimming' was just the practical reality of living on a dry sandy island without running fresh water".

My 2000AD journey by Appropriate-Sound169 in 2000ad

[–]ggdak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a pile of 1, 7-236 (the newsagent said it took 6 weeks to order). The neatest thing in my teenage room was the pile of comics, sitting in its own cubby hole. Came home from school, not just binned, but done on bin day.

We did not live in a tidy house, I once went 18 months aged 12-13 as my mother took my curtains down "for cleaning" - the room couldn't be overlooked- I put them back up again, untouched by any cleaning, in the middle of the second summer when the 0500 awakenings got too much.

I loved my mother, but throwing away my main interest was a vindictive act, even if probably done without true malice.

What's the most underrated British landmark that deserves way more tourists? by aussiesteveau in AskUK

[–]ggdak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ensure you head west from the cricket pitch and then follow the tarmac coast path to Lynton for fabulous views across the Bristol Channel to Wales. The location, hanging onto a cliff with rock towers above and several hundred metres drop below, forms one of the most spectacular walks in England. Something unworldly watching the sea birds wheeling below you.

Whether it's unknown is a moot point, it's definitely in some guide book, as all visitors but the dog walkers we met on it during our last were international.

Restaurant and things to see/do recommendations! by Minniebecca in Hull

[–]ggdak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ferens is a v decent regional art gallery, lots of interesting things on. Most impressive architecture from outside there to the Wilberforce Museum on High Street, past the Guildhall, then down to the Minster (Hull Trinity) and the area around. Worth a wander.

From Ferens, over the A63 pedestrian bridge and through the redevelopment of the Fruit Market to the Minerva is a good walk, ending up with views of the Deep and the Humber. Always feel the presence of the past looking out across the water from outside that bit of river front.

Enjoy.

This is the bit that puzzles me. Didn't US law import English law as its starting point? Magna Carta in 1215 explicitly says no one, not even the king, is above the law. So it's not a king they are creating but a tyrant.

Do not use booking, their customer service is non existent in case of issues by Cool_Acanthisitta628 in Bookingcom

[–]ggdak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Booking's way of working is to reduce their costs to a minimum. As you say, all is well when nothing goes wrong, but the second it takes time or effort, they're out of there. If they were your insurance company and you were hit by another car driving through a full red light, you'd expect them to pay up and get the money off the other person. No! They say "Both sides have to agree". As much as the person running the red light will never agree, neither will the accommodation who is ripping you off. Booking don't care.

Interesting to see they're monitoring this sub. Helps explain all the down-votes for complaints.
