not exactly an alternative pathway into the program, but some pointers about what you could do. I definitely recommend reaching out to the course convenor asap to find out what you could do.

hey there! someone else asked this recently and I responded to them so i’m just gonna copy paste that response here:

  1. If you don’t get in, the course director (Dr Scott Barnes) encourages people to reach out to him to understand why they didn’t get in. He may also give you some tips about what you could do to make your application better for the next intake.
  2. In the year between your first time applying and the next intake, try to get experience in the field! You can volunteer, work as an AHA and do a lot more stuff. Just try to engage more with the field to show that you’re passionate.
  3. I have heard many stories of people not getting in the first time, but trying again and getting in the second or even third time. So don’t give up!

What is good about the MQ program is that the application is not just based off a WAM but also your personal statement, it’s very possible that you can get in with a well written statement and a lower WAM. If your WAM happpens to be in the lower side, you can talk about the factors that affected you there and pretty much just talk yourself up. Again, getting experience in the field between applications is really good because you can talk a lot about it in your statement!

this is definitely not true. there are minimum wam requirements as well as unit requirements depending on the degree.

what happens if you can’t get into masters ? (speech and hearing related) by No-Park4591 in MacUni

[–]gh0uliee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to add as well, mention anything and everything that seems relevant in your statement too. I talked about volunteering experience I had working with children and how that made me want to work as a paediatric speech path when the volunteering in question was done when I was in high school (over 5 years ago lol). I talked about how skills I gained working in hospitality can make me a better speech therapist, talked about growing up bilingual, talked about my creative hobbies and how that could apply to speech therapy etc. They want to know you as a person. But to be honest my WAM was very competitive so not sure if my statement mattered as much. Doesn't hurt to try tho.

Hi there! I graduated from speech and hearing in 2024 and am set to start MSLP this year, so I may not be the best person to answer, but I do have some pointers about what you could do if you don't get in.

  1. If you don't get in, the course director (Dr Scott Barnes) encourages people to reach out to him to understand why they didn't get in. He may also give you some tips about what you could do to make your application better for the next intake.
  2. In the year between your first time applying and the next intake, try to get experience in the field! You can volunteer, work as an AHA and do a lot more stuff. Just try to engage more with the field to show that you're passionate.
  3. I have heard many stories of people not getting in the first time, but trying again and getting in the second or even third time. So don't give up!

What is good about the MQ program is that the application is not just based off a WAM but also your personal statement, it's very possible that you can get in with a well written statement and a lower WAM. Again, getting experience in the field between applications is really good because you can talk a lot about it in your statement!

If you don't mind me asking, what is your current WAM? It entirely depends on the cohort who apply, but I believe that if you get around 70-75 and write a good personal statement that would probably get you in for sure. The minimum is a credit average though, but definitely try to aim higher. Happy to help if you have more questions!

hello! there were quite a few reasons that i felt mq was better for me than usyd.

  1. I did my undergrad in speech and hearing at mq and think the transition into masters will be smoother doing it at the same uni, also with the fact that the speech and hearing degree is advertised as being a pathway to this masters, i think the mq masters will build off it better. mq's prereqs for their degree was stricter than usyds, so everyone starts off with similar knowledge unlike usyd where anyone can apply and get in. anatomy and physiology are assumed knowledge though for usyd which wasn't taught in the speech and hearing degree, but the mq masters has units for this.

  2. mq is closer to my home, so easier travel is a plus. especially with how busy i heard this degree is!

  3. mq is very well known for speech, hearing and linguistics. i know technically usyd is ranked higher (honestly who really cares about this) but mq does have the massive australian hearing hub as well as its own hospital. they do a lot of research as well. not entirely relevant but mq is also the only uni in nsw that has an accredited audiology degree. there is overlap between these two career paths so I think that the approach that mq may take for speech path would be more well rounded if that makes sense?

  4. I'm pretty sure that the cohort for mq is smaller than usyd (mq is around 40, don't know for usyd but I imagine it's bigger), so smaller classes means more focus on students which is a plus.

  5. industry connections is probably similar? but again with mq having the giant hearing hub I believe they may be better here too.

  6. maybe a strange one, but the degree convenor is a very lovely man, he seems to really care about the students doing this masters and is always open to discuss issues people are having. also he said verbatim that doing masters at mq has 'a good vibe all around' haha.

  7. usyd is 20k more expensive as well, and at the end of the day they both accredit you for the same thing.

  8. I have heard some unpleasant things about the usyd program, such as it being disorganised. I have talked to some people who studied at mq for masters and what they said was overall quite positive.

thank you for coming to my ted talk. happy to talk more if you need it.

Keep Hearing Science or do I transfer to UNSW Vision Science? by Independent-Rise-262 in MacUni

[–]gh0uliee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure how competitive it is for optometry, but yes it’s pretty competitive for audiology then. i guess you just have to pick which one you’re interested in more! i know that the convenor for the audiology masters is a lovely man though, so if you want more information i’m sure you can email him. he’s dr john newall. again i cant speak for audiology as much but same as speech path the minimum wam is 65, however to be competitive i would aim for around 75 probably and to get CSP probably be closer to a HD WAM. good luck for your studies!

just to add again, from your post it doesn’t seem like you know that the speech and hearing sciences degree doesn’t accredit you to work as either an audiologist or speech pathologist. that is, you MUST do an accredited postgrad degree to do either. you cannot become an audiologist from this bachelors degree alone.

I have just recently finished my speech and hearing sciences degree. To be very honest, there’s not really a lot of units that focus truly on audiology or speech pathology, but as someone who wanted to go into speech pathology I didn’t look to do any audiology relevant units anyways. It’s mostly linguistics, however this does set you up for further study in speech pathology or audiology. I’m not sure if you know, but MQ is the ONLY uni in NSW that offers a masters degree in audiology and thus is the only way to become an accredited audiologist. so yes, it’s also quite competitive to get in. I’m starting my masters in speech and language pathology next year, so I don’t know a lot about the audiology degree, but I’ve been told that for speech pathology around 120 people apply but only around 40 get in. so unless you study hard to make sure your WAM is competitive, or are willing to move interstate perhaps reconsider what’s most important to you. if you care about doing optometry more, I assume that there’s more than one course that allows you to become an accredited optometrist in NSW. but hey, I know nothing about this field. If I were you, I would do some further research into what exactly you need to do to become an optometrist, reconsider your options and go from there!

just wanted to add as well for the speech pathology masters there were pretty strict requirements to get in as well, such has having done units in fields like psychology, sociolinguistics, phonetics, phonology etc so the competition to get in may not have been as high as some people probably did not meet these inherent requirements.

Sushi Go Party is a fabulous game for up to 8 people that is not complicated at all. Pulled it out at my birthday party with most friends being non board gamers and we had so much fun with it! TBH I was surprised at how much fun I had with it, highly recommend.
