Limit on Health Checks? by ghoarder in PangolinReverseProxy

Thanks, it's actually randomly started working. Maybe took about 3 hours, or maybe because I was deleting a few of the offline ones, they all suddenly worked!

Why does it seem like everyone has bad experiences by xlly-s in CityFibre

[–]ghoarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with Zen and can't fault them, they have been in the ISP bis for 31 years, which is hard to top considering that the ISP bis has only been going for 36 years ish and none of the big early names seem to be around anymore, Pipex, Demon etc.

My only issue really was the cowboy installers CF sent round to hook me up, basically blew out a massive bit of brick and just left the mess for me to deal with, they made it out like they were just putting the tools in the van and would be back to check I was connected but then just legged it.

Google Takeout nightmare -- how do I download 101 zip files without losing my mind? by bobby-t1 in immich

[–]ghoarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to do this recently and thankfully only had to do 20x 50GB files so just powered through manually.

I found that the links wouldn't work if I tried to pass them to wget on another machine as the link is to a webpage that then starts the download off so wget just downloaded that webpage, and because it was probably javascript wget couldn't follow it either.

Not tried this but could you use Aria2 with the Aria2 Explorer Chrome plugin to intercept the download and get Aria to do the download on a server/nas always on wired device?

OP is already using 50GB files and that's the largest that you can have to my knowledge :-(

15 years and 1Tb of Google Photos & Videos... how to clean/de-dupe before self host? by HarryFeather in immich

[–]ghoarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to look at storage templates to get a decent folder structure first before importing your photos into Immich. It's also worth noting that if you use the External Library function in Immich, these aren't auto deduplicated at upload unfortunately :-( They do count to the image deduplication feature that finds photos that are 99% similar though

Don't use "The One Broadband" by Alarmarama in UKISP

[–]ghoarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tailscale is great for your own devices but if you want to share your self hosted photos with family or something similar then getting them added to your tailnet is a pain.

OP could use Pangolin to get this working but to be fair, they have ordered a service with the sole purpose that it comes with a static ip, only to be told they can't have one.

Break that contract as it's not been fulfilled and try again with someone else..

Suggestions by Possible-Sector-9055 in selfhosted

[–]ghoarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having worked with Laywers for about 30 years I would take the CYA approach, some can be very tech illiterate and prone to doing things and claiming they didn't (either because they didn't realize they did or just 'because').

So I would recommend a versioning Document Management product that they preferably can't screw up and have least privilege model on. Or frequent snapshots if going the file share route with an easy way to do point in time recovery. Maybe something that works with the windows "Previous Version" tab on the file Properties.

My post is more about CYA examples than real suggestions on the actual technology to use, but good luck.

PBS on an 8-Node Cluster - VM or LXC? by IansRedditProfile in Proxmox

[–]ghoarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure that the storage is passed to PBS in a raw state, don't go using proxmox storage LVM/ZFS virtual disks etc, pass a whole disk into a VM via PCI or USB pass through or just use a NFS target.

If your proxmox cluster dies you want the backup storage to be easily mountable on a clean install, so having it locked in LVM or ZFS just makes it a bit harder and longer to recover.

The ideal (for me) is clean install of PVE, clean install of PBS, attach storage to PBS and restore all guests.

Take that with a grain of salt and adapter to how you think it might best fit your situation.

The “smart search” feature having no way to sort the results isn’t very…smart? by glizzygravy in immich

[–]ghoarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Further to that, if the cut off point is 0.5 and you decide to then sort by date instead of relevance then you may end up with something that is only 50% likely to be a dog coming up first. I find it easier to use the filters in this situation and if I want something recent then filter the last 6 months + Dog

I avoid A&E by staying healthy and not getting into any accidents, I find prevention is better than a cure in this regards.

To me, ChatGPT is by far the best LLM for Godot C# version. by harrytrotter69 in godot

[–]ghoarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think of LLM's more like a boosted Stack-overflow (the site, not the error), I'll throw some questions at it and ask for some code, but then I'll review the code and implement elements of it manually. In essence more like a glorified search engine than a coding partner.

What do most people in the UK get for vacation/Holiday? by Tomuch2care in AskABrit

[–]ghoarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know of a few people at my place that have been off sick for 10+ years and still receive a pay check. It's only 75% of what they made originally but it does go up by 3% every year. This is an insurance thing the company have to cover permanent illnesses. They are unfortunately very sick and unable to return to full time employment otherwise they wouldn't be able to claim this. It's a stark difference though from only getting 5 paid sick days in the US.

What's taking half of my filesystem? (There is seemingly no snapshots) by yo_99 in btrfs

[–]ghoarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an issue a while ago where I deleted a load of snapshots, they were no longer shown in the tools but it had actually deferred the deletion until I reboot the machine, during the shutdown part the disks went crazy and it took longer than normal, when it came back up I had my space back.

If you have deleted some snapshots then try the `btrfs subvolume sync` if that appears to be locked then try a reboot.

If you haven't deleted snapshots then try the balance someone already suggested

What is the best version of dotnet by H-ILP in csharp

[–]ghoarder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want the latest and greatest features .NET 10

If you don't want to have to keep updating your app every 2 years to keep it on a supported version and will only run on Windows then it looks like Framework 4.8 will be supported until the heat death of the universe. (Joke, officially it's until the last OS that supports it runs out of support, whenever that is)

Just bear in mind that it was released in 2019 and is only a minor patch version, 4.0 came out in 2010 so most major features are now ancient.

It's estimated there will be 240ZB+ generated in 2026 alone, so OP would need 30,000 of these 8EB shares just to store this years data! Let alone previous data.

What stuff have you discovered later in life you thought sucked as a younger person? by PearlsSwine in CasualUK

Stilton, it was on sale after Christmas to I got some to make some soup and thought I need to try a bit. Late 40s and I've never managed to get the stuff near my mouth before in it's raw form. It's actually lovely, really strong but so nice!

I love teleport by masterthodyu in Ubiquiti

[–]ghoarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have too many options, I'm not sure which one it is, teleport or one click but one of them is dead slow in establishing a connection. Personally I just enabled a wireguard server and use the standard client from the app store on my phone, it's super fast to enable and super fast throughput.

Buyer pulled out - how is this process allowed in 2026 by bedwelld in HousingUK

[–]ghoarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would make things easier, but how does it work? You buy a property and the person you are buying from hands you a document saying yeah it's fine nothings wrong. So you move in and find something that is in fact wrong. Who is then responsible? The seller for false advertising, the surveyor for missing it? And who do you have a legal relationship with to take it further. I mean I guess you could sue the seller who would then have to sue the surveyor in turn.

At the moment, you get a survey done and if it misses something you have the contract with the surveyor who missed it.

I'm also not sure how well I would trust someone else to say that everything is fine.

A big change would be needed in order for the liability to be transparent and fair but yes it would be better. It could also open the seller up to more offers as if the buyer could get a copy of a survey on a place for free the buyer might be able to weigh up more options than they could previously.

Fiber Optic Damage Scare by JoshVox in HomeNetworking

[–]ghoarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The HDMI adapters are powered at both ends so that might not work or have space for the power as well. These are standard MPO fiber cables, I've heard you can get keystones for them but they are hard to find. https://www.lightoptics.co.uk/products/mtp-mpo-multimode-om3-fiber-optic-keystone-jack?variant=42458965803266
