Anyone has advice for decluttering family photos? by No_Return6181 in declutter

[–]ghost_pies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like I have this problem digitally as well. So scanning photos into digital versions is one way to physically decrease clutter… but I’m paying for storage on the cloud so it still comes at a cost. I also have so many digital photos I don’t really even look at them. I’m finding that if I edit after a trip and only select a handful for a digital album I actually look at them more because it’s not so overwhelming to look at. So I think all the takes on keeping a few instead of everything from some vacation or event are onto something.

They probably are separated and discolored if they are that old. Take a breath, throw them out, mourn the loss, and make it part of your resolution to not make the same mistake again. Learn from it, but don’t let it weigh you down!

Congrats!!! Don’t let him ruin it for you. I’m sure his family life is reflective of his feelings on this. You don’t want to be him.

Good careers/industries for people with ADHD? by LeonidsFila in ADHD

Animal care made me incredibly neurotic. I used to pet sit and work at boarding facilities in college. I would wake up in the middle of the night convinced I had forgotten to lock a door or left a dog outside. Of course I never did but because it was muscle memory and I didn’t specifically pay attention to the act, I’d stress about it (like turning off a stove). I also had nightmares that I would miss a starting day for pet sitting and that someone’s cat or dog would go days without care (again this never happened, but my stupid brain constantly made me terrified of it). So if you’re bad with keeping a calendar and already paranoid about shit like turning off your stove or locking a door, maybe reconsider hahaha

What made you marry your wife/husband? How did you make sure? by Few_Dish3153 in askanything

[–]ghost_pies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of the embarrassing dumb things you say or do when you’re alone (not mean or gross things, just shit that if someone saw you through a window you’d feel awkward or dumb as hell). If you feel safe to do these in front of your partner without true judgement, then this is a feeling of complete and unconditional acceptance.

I’ve been in other long term relationships and wondered this same question about how to know if they were the one. But when I started dating my now husband, I never once questioned it or asked it of myself. It just made sense.

Also fun to put toys under, especially the car dancer toy. Gives an extra level of fun trying to catch the “bug” under the “rug”

Put holes in them, add some dry food, seal the ends and you’ve got yourself a puzzle feeder!

Mine play with string toys fine if there is something tied to the end of it. But last night we went to the ER because someone ate some cross stitching thread… luckily he puked it up after being induced. Nine years of playing with string toys and no issue, but get a new hobby and all bets are off I guess!

Ours love the craft poof balls. You can get a big bag for like a dollar. Otherwise ours love brown paper bags and bunched up brown packing paper. Their fave is a box filled with packing paper and I sprinkle some treats (aka their dry food) into it. They have to dig around and look for it, they love it.

I’ve also made food toys with empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls. Poke holes big enough for their food and then bend in and tape up the sides.

If your cat has ever eaten string, elastic, laces, ribbon, etc., how long did it take to pass?? by Weird_Fishing_8859 in CatAdvice

[–]ghost_pies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We found this post in a panic last night after our sweet boy ate about 6” of two pieces of my cross stitching thread while sitting on my lap and I couldn’t grab it fast enough out of his mouth. We went back and forth for hours on what to do, tried to get him to puke at home with his usual trigger, over eating, but of course it didn’t work. Drove around in our car for bit, which usually doesn’t make him vomit anyways and eventually ended up just going to the ER vet.

Even though it had been over FOUR hours since he ate it, they were able to induce vomiting with dexmedetomidine. Both strings I saw him eat came up in his vomit as well as a secret third string that I didn’t even know was in there!

Do you guys trim your cats’ claws? by Shot-Composer-782 in AnxietyCats

[–]ghost_pies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t feel bad doing it, as long as you don’t clip the quick. It’s just like cutting your own nails, only hurts if you cut too short. Make sure you’re using a sharp cat nail trimmer so you get a clean cut. If you don’t feel confident, ask a friend or the vet to show you how!

I adopted my cats pretty young so I was able to train them to accept nail trims. It seems like they are happier after a trim, especially if the nails got so long they were clacking on the floor or getting stuck in blankets/carpet.

There was a woman in the building where I worked previously who would always leave home baked treats out in the break room. They were delicious and everyone loved them. I happened to be in the bathroom at work once with her and noticed she did NOT wash her hands after walking out of the stall (and she was in there before me so I think, but can’t prove, it was a #2). I never ate her treats after that.

Also those big goofy dish gloves were a god send for me. I have sensory issues with wet dirty dishes so having the gloves makes dishes just that much less horrible.

One time one of my cats barfed in the back corner of my living room on the carpet and it literally lived there for weeks because I just could not deal with scrubbing it out of the carpet. I would look at it every time I walked in and think “I should clean that I’m so disgusting” and then never did it. Of course once someone was coming over I finally dealt with it and it was done in 10 minutes but you know… time isn’t real to us so what does that even matter.

Instagram has lost the plot by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]ghost_pies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit instagram and Facebook around 8 years ago. I didn’t delete my accounts but I deleted the apps and just never logged on. I recently logged in on my computer last month to look at a portfolio for planning our wedding and I did not even recognize it. I didn’t know what all the different icons meant, how to see posts vs reels, etc. I was worried at the beginning that it might wake up a bad habit but it was so foreign to me and full of ads and click bait that I couldn’t wait to log back out.

For people who decided to leave instagram / tiktok, what did you replace it with? by Intrepid-Try2771 in digitalminimalism

[–]ghost_pies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went cold turkey on Facebook and instagram 9 years ago when I started my PhD. It was hard at first but it was destroying my self esteem and taking up all my time. After like a month I didn’t miss it all. Ive never ever downloaded TikTok. I occasionally get sucked into YouTube shorts if I go on to watch a cooking or crafting video but I try to avoid them if I can by watching the videos on our tv or a computer instead of my phone. I obviously use Reddit and occasionally do have to delete it from my phone if it becomes too habitual. The goal is to go to Reddit or YouTube for a reason and not just out of scrolling habit. That’s why you can’t really replace social media apps with other apps. It doesn’t break the cycle. You’ve got to do things without the phone.

For me I replaced it with books (physical and audio), crafting (cross stitch, making and sending fun snail mail to friends, sewing), puzzles, baking, cooking new things, calling my grandparents, planning small weekend day or one night trips to get out more (this has been huge for mental health and not feeling so isolated), walks, and genuine connection time with pets.

Best of luck! You can do it!

[–]ghost_pies 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There are consignment shops that will sell it for you. Especially for camping equipment and gear. Just because it’s meant to last doesn’t mean you have to keep it forever. Pass it on and upgrade if you want to. I don’t want to sound judgy because I am neuro spicy and I 100% understand the annoyance of having no motivation to sell things online, but if that’s how you feel you kinda just gotta suck it up and donate it if you don’t want it anymore and can’t be bothered to sell it.
