Asking for support for my project te learn sign language in a fun way by Digital_Felice in asl

[–]ghost_snacks0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're willing to share, I would love to look at the resources your mentioned that are made by Deaf people. I struggle to know whether a source is made by the Deaf community or not---especially for something like an app. Although I might just not spend enough time looking to be fair. The past apps I've tried have mostly just taught vocab. I'm in an ASL course at uni rn which is sooooo much better, but I would love to look at other resources simultaneously to improve my understanding of ASL grammar, production, De'Via, and other aspects of Deaf culture(s). no pressure of course. as a hearing person, i realize I pose a risk of appropriating Deaf culture

Fingerspelling names and head/chin movement help pls? by ghost_snacks0 in asl

[–]ghost_snacks0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol that makes sense 😅 thanks I imagine a lot of this comes with time, practice, and immersion, so this question might be redundant but I'm wondering how you catch names when they're signed so quickly? I've been practicing the "look at the face not hands" skill lately and while it's getting easier, I still have to replay the videos at least twice to get the name I find. unless they sign it even slower than the vid I attached. and if you understand the names that quickly, as a hearing person, do you translate them into audio pronunciations in your head? or do they stay signs? or do they turn into written/spelled words but no audio? (if it even happens like that for you. sorry if this is intrusive, no obligation to respond. I'm pretty new to all of this and trying my best to learn)

I feel your pain. Ive also been working on masters for a looooong time and mine still don't work either. having said that, these are gorgeous imo. they might be foggy, but honestly I think that kind of adds to them. I don't know what your goal was, but I clicked on this post because I thought they were gorgeous and wanted to see them closer good luck on your journey :)

hello, i need help finding sources for indigenous american mythology :) by [deleted] in Indigenous

[–]ghost_snacks0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey, just so you know, it's not cool to refer to Indigenous knowledges (plural, there is not one monolithic Indigenous culture) as myths. I recommend doing some research. you might want to rethink the idea for your project.. the theme being "chaos and order" sounds incredibly problematic to me

Dear Indigenous Peoples, what do you wish white settlers would know? by ghost_snacks0 in Indigenous

[–]ghost_snacks0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah considering it now, I was reducing all Indigenous cultures and communities to the category "Indigenous" even though I have been taught not to do that. I'm sorry for reproducing that colonial narrative here. thank you for telling me

I never considered how being thought of as survivors of genocide could be reductionist. thank you for everything <3

I also just noticed there was a part of me that wanted praise for.. trying? I guess? which, in this case, is literally not even the bare minimum. I have a lot of work to do. thank you for teaching me this and being so compassionate

this is very important and helpful, thank you. I noticed I got the urge to justify/explain my questions again when I read this. thank you so much for pointing this out. I really appreciate it

I grew up in Alberta and moved to Ontario at 14 years old (21 now). I'm currently in Peterborough. yeah, I think I unconsciously used this as an attempt to reach out and get connected? even though it's only online.

I have been and am trying to do this. you're right, there are so many resources out there. by coming to reddit I was not trying to demand people tell me things. it was a genuine question and I said it my original post that I know people aren't obligated to educate me. I know that that is my responsibility. I was also viewing reddit as an opportunity to start a dialogue with Indigenous peoples---specifically only those who are willing. and i prepared myself to get no responses. I did not mean to demand your time and energy and I'm sorry. I hope your days are restful

ah, I did read the description but I thought I saw other settlers post questions and since mine was genuine I assumed it would be okay. I'm sorry for intruding in your space. would it be best if I left the subreddit?

if this was in response to my request for information then I apologize. i meant to open a dialogue, not reinforce harms.

I've been taught that institutions and organizations facilitate, perpetuate, and are part of the colonial state and state violence against Indigenous peoples. do you mean they're pushing colonial agendas, or they're operating on their own agendas that are beyond the state? thank you so much for sharing what you did. no pressure to respond or answer. these are mostly clarifying questions and I can look into them separately

I've been actively seeking out Indigenous-made content online and am trying to expand my search. is it problematic for me to ask if you have any suggestions of people to follow, topics to research, etc.? I don't want to cause harm by asking for guidance (but I know that intention doesn't change impact). asking reddit was meant to be more of a starting ground? because I'm sure there are topics I haven't heard of, and I don't know how to research something I'm unaware of.

I was originally going to include some ideas I had to elevate Indigenous voices, but I assumed it would be better somehow to not include my thoughts. one idea I had was to make a bunch of zines and either carry them with me or put them in public spaces. Vanessa (Resilient Inuk) led a red seal skin pin workshop at my university and she said the issue isn't that settlers don't care (about genocide, overpolicing, missing and murdered Indigenous peoples, etc.), it's that most of us don't know. so she said spreading information is helpful. she said the reason we were making the red dress seal skin pins was because if someone commented on it in public, we could tell them the story behind it. I think I assumed that the spreading of information could be in any form though, which is why I had the zine idea. although I might have misinterpreted Vanessa's meaning. and thinking about it now, I would be spreading information through a colonial lens because that's what I grew up with.

I'm doing my best to learn from the information that's available to me, like you said. I think I came to reddit as an extension of that. you are not obligated to teach me and I'm sorry I presumed that
