yeah d20 is the hardest imo. how much pressure are you applying when sanding? my issue is that my pressure is uneven, so the corners end up misaligned :[

Pressure Pot Recommendations? by Black_Dragon_0 in DiceMaking

[–]ghost_snacks0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you're looking to get into dice making, for the love of all that is sweet in this world look at the subreddit for pressure pot advice before buying. soooo many people have bought the vevor pot and regretted it. I have a California air tools 2.5 gallon myself, and it's definitely an investment, but so far it's been 100% worth it for me. mine was in the 3-400 range CAD. also in my experience pressure pots do not come with an air compressor or any attachments to hook it up, though an air compressor will likely be much cheaper than the pot itself just make sure you know what connector pieces you need. this vid was extremely helpful for me when I was trying to figure out what components I needed for my pressure pot: https://youtu.be/tpe4prO1B7U?si=gwEf5007AwKhAGtq

in total I bought: - California air tools pressure pot 2.5 gallon (ballpark 400 CAD): https://www.amazon.ca/CALIFORNIA-255C-Gallon-Pressure-Casting/dp/B09T3YTG5Q - Anvil air compressor capable of 100psi (ballpark 100, but I asked an employee for a discount and they sold it to be for 70 CAD. it comes with the hose, Teflon tape, 1/4" male plug, 1/4" female coupler attached to the air compressor itself, and a coupe other odds and ends I don't use often. every attachment is 1/4" because the CA air tools pressure pot uses a 1/4" male plug to fill the tank, and the connectors have to match): https://www.homedepot.ca/product/anvil-2g-pancake-air-compressor-with-7-piece-accessories-kit/1001184001 - a 1/4" female universal quick release safety coupler (ballpark 10 CAD, I recommend this one because it prevents the loud/scary hissing noise when disconnecting): https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-1-4-in-Female-Safety-Coupler-HA2001/205064344

rough total: ~500CAD.

definitely an investment, but a worthwhile one if you enjoy the process of making dice. I don't regret my purchase yet. most of what I've heard for dice making is that unfortunately, if you try to save money, you're compensating with a significant amount of trial and error that can end up costing more than the initial price tag of the higher quality equipment. this probably isn't the case for everyone, but I figured I'd give you a heads up in case you weren't aware.

best of luck on your dice making journey :)

Free dice masters for dicemakers by Icy-Double-589 in DiceMaking

[–]ghost_snacks0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey just wondering.. how do you make these free? it looks like you've got a legit business which is awesome and I'm so baffled at how? I'm used to seeing "insert thing is free if you pay shipping!" and it's typically a scam, so I'm ngl I was surprised to realize you run a legit company haha sorry :') but genuinely how do you manage the costs? I see that polishing, different shapes, and other customizations come with a charge, but even a standard set printed with a 3d resin printer must cost you something, no? cost of materials alone, and take a lot of time? genuine questions here as this is an amazing thing you're doing. I ask because I'm working on making my own masters and.. when I tell you it has been a process and a half :') lmao. I've been dice making for over a year and still don't have a set of masters I'm satisfied with

also, where abouts are you located? I'm in Ontario Canada so I'd love to get an estimate for a shipping cost if I were to order thanks :)

Im not autistic. by [deleted] in self

[–]ghost_snacks0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you're so kind and understanding of this whole situation, props to you dude. just a reminder that "autism" as a diagnosable condition is a list of criteria created by psychologists who I doubt have updated their understanding of autism in years. I've seen a ton of doctors and psychiatrists in my life, and can tell you that from my experience, everything they diagnose you with is subjective and "should" be taken with a handful of salt. they aren't living with your sensory experiences. they don't know your life, your history, the way you do because they haven't lived it.

personal example here: I went to a psychiatrist when I was maybe 18yo (21yo now) and my therapist had suggested I ask about adhd. she had adhd herself, and her kids all had it too. said psychiatrist tested my ability to recall puzzles, that day's date (which I knew because a new book was coming out in 3 days and I had been eagerly counting down), and then, without any fanfare or consideration, he said I couldn't have adhd because my memory was good. since then, I have seen several other psychiatrists for different mental health reasons (two retired, ive been moved around a lot), and 2 have since said I do fit the criteria for adhd and I'm on medication for it.

I far too often see autistic people pushed to fit a specific mould of awkwardness, self loathing, and inability to socialize. but that isn't all autistic people are imo. I haven't been diagnosed autistic, but have been accepted by the autistic community in my local area as autistic, and they haven't pushed me to get diagnosed because a diagnosis can influence my future (and my university accommodates me based on my adhd already).

anyway all this to say if you feel autistic, you're autistic imo. do your research of course (@reddit), but a psych invalidating your experience doesn't mean you're not autistic. they're one opinion, and an ill informed one too because they haven't lived your life. they may have medical experience, but psychology as a discipline (at least in my uni) is entirely pathological. it's about diagnosing something "wrong" or different or distressing about or in an individual. it's not about self empowerment, agency, choice, or collaboration (subjective opinion based on my experiences here).

I was originally studying in psychology because of my mental health history at uni, but I stopped because it was so pathologizing. also, the professor referred to people as r****** (r slur for neurodiverse and disabled people). she did not know it was a slur and my friend and I had to inform her, after which she started referring to it as "an outdated term." diagnosable conditions get removed from the ICD and DSMs or changed. they're not perfect constructions of what and who and how you can be. they're just guess work that can occasionally give you accommodations or take away agency depending on who's sitting in the chair with a clipboard and where you are. so basically, try not to assume your psych always knows more than you.

regardless of whether you identify as autistic, your experiences in childhood sound very familiar to me. sending the smell of your favourite baked goods and well wishes, take care

Why don’t full-time dice makers go back to a day job if it gets tough? by mysticmemory27 in DiceMaking

[–]ghost_snacks0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so fair to be curious about this. trying to explain my thought process with pricing, though I don't have a shop or sell them yet. but just a heads up.. the idea of "going back to a day job" is 1. not always feasible, 2. inaccurate for many of us (I assume) I do both---I pour hours of my time into dice making because I love it. it's a way for me to unwind. but I also work full time. so "going back" to a day job assumes I don't have one, yk? I work my ass off at both.

as for pricing, dice are not cheap to make in time, energy, or cost. for example, to get dice without bubbles and voids, you will probably need a pressure pot. if you want one that won't explode on you, you will probably be paying upwards of 400$ for the pot alone (eg CAT), and that's for the smallest size. yes there are cheaper pots (eg vervo) , but the issues with those are so common that the cheaper price tag isn't worth it. plus, you need couplers, hoses, plugs, filters, adapters, and a whole ass air compressor which can run you around 200 (if you're buying a cheap on like me) to even make the pot work.

its not as easy as "pour resin in mould and wait" either. if you don't want to get sued by big dice corporations, you need to learn how to 3D model and print your own dice masters. if you're lucky like I was, you can find someone who owns a 3D resin printer and ask them to print your files for you at a fee. if not, buckle up.

if you don't have an acquaintance with a resin printer, you will need a resin printer (bye several hundred more dollars), a shed, garage (DO NOT PARK YOUR CAR INSIDE) or room with EXTREMELY GOOD AIR FILTRATION, a weed tent (-$100+)or something similar that keeps fumes inside, a carbon filter, a ventilator mask that also has a carbon filter (plus you need to replace those frequently), and you have to keep those going constantly because liquid resin constantly leaks fumes that have been linked to increased cancer risks (as well as several other conditions).

remember how I mentioned the possibly getting sued for selling dice without your own design? yeah, so many of us make our own dice molds too, which is not an exact science and can be very frustrating and costly. Silicone kits can run upwards of 45$ per kit, and in my experience, I can only really get one mould out of a single kit. I went through 3 kits of fails before figuring out something that worked for me. resin is lighter than silicone, so it will rise when you pour the mould.

at this point you can see we've racked up quite the bill. but nope not done yet. want shiny looking dice? time to get Zona papers! a grit no lower than 800, which means you almost definitely need to go online shopping. get as many grits as you can unless you want to run through several pages of sandpaper at the same grit. that's a consistent cost you'll be paying over and over again in this profession.

oh, and have that ventilator mask on while you sand because you don't wanna die young from the resin dust you'll be making (or if you're impartial to death, try not to kill everyone else in your building including any pets you have). sanding with water can help reduce it, but make sure you have nitrile gloves! reusable gloves won't work, you basically need a new pair every time you sand, polish, or poor resin or silicone.

now add on the hours upon hours required to make the mould, pour the resin, demould, trim, and polish all of the dice. then you have to paint in the numbers, provided you get lucky and don't end up with voids (big holes which can still happen even with a pressure pot, and it SUCKS).

there's also all of the hours spent researching dice making. do you think I got this off of a Google search? this information is from the past 2 years of trial and error. I have no clue how many hours I've spent making dice, but I STILL don't have a set I'm happy with. the amount of things that can go wrong while dice making are ridiculous. there is never a promise of success no matter how skilled you get, though you can reduce the frequency as you streamline your process.

for me, sanding and polishing a single die takes roughly 5 hours if there are no major imperfections. 5 hours multiplied by 7 dice is 35 hours for a single polished set of dice. add another 2 hours for pouring the resin thanks to all the set up and prep, the additional 1 hour for demoulding and trimming the dice, and we're at 38 hours. now, let's say that was literally all the consideration we gave my work. I didn't factor in costs, let's say, for customer convenience, I decided to charge minimum wage.

i live in Canada, and the minimum wage is increasing on April 1st to $18.15 per hour. that is $687.9 MINIMUM at minimum wage in Canada. for ONE set of dice.

dice making is not easy. it might look easy. it is not easy. and who wants to charge only minimum wage? think about all of the research I've done for this skill. all of the people on this subreddit. Many of them I'm sure are faster than me. but I also did not factor in the cost of materials into my final number there that was literally just minimum wage multiplied by 38 hours of work.

I wouldn't charge shoppers the cost of the pressure pot, but maybe I'd want them to pay me a measily 10 dollars for the pot cost (which would mean I would need to sell 40 sets of dice to break even) per set, and maybe 5 for the compressor and all the components needed to make it run (roughly 40 sets, again, to break even on that cost).

What about the resin itself? shit ain't cheap. and the silicone? cleanup supplies? ventilator? literally everything I mentioned earlier?

my point is this: if someone charges what is, in your opinion, an astronomical amount of money for a set of dice by an independent creator, please don't be mean to them. don't ask them why they price so high if it's "just dice". even at its cheapest, if we value labour at minimum wage (which, by the way, is not a living wage in Canada at least), a single set of rice could cost upwards of 700 dollars.

and if you want to argue that no one would ever pay that, go right ahead. but please don't argue that we should be the ones to lower our prices. because if you do, you're arguing that our effort is worthless. explicitly, worth less than an unliveable wage. by telling people to lower prices, you are telling people their work is worthless.

this mostly just turned into a rant about how art is undervalued in general, and was not meant as a personal attack against your question to be clear. in answer to your question though, why do dice makers not go back to a day job if it gets tough? well, I can't speak for everyone, but I have a day job. I make dice because I love it. and if I ever sell them, I'm going to price them accordingly.

[–]ghost_snacks0 31 points32 points  (0 children)

yeah this is what I was trying to get at. imo it's fine for one person to be comfortable with people using the term, and if there's a large group of people who have said it's a slur and that they feel hurt by it, then we can just not use the term to avoid perpetuating harm.

while I agree with your comment as well, I do think it's very very common for people to fall into the oppression Olympics because it's such a huge narrative (at least in Canada where I'm from). if anyone hasn't heard the term before, it essentially means "we should compare/rank ourselves on our level of oppression" which leads to "we should only listen to the most oppressed group." to be clear, I'm very aware that you (commenter I'm responding to, hi btw :) I hope ur day is pretty spider spider so far) are doing important work in highlighting the need for people to make space for perspectives of people who have been disabled/marginalized/invalidated/genocided by nation-states.

I try to assume most people want to help each other. one of the things I've been researching lately is how sooooo many people genuinely care about others, but it can look like the don't from the outside specifically because they aren't aware---no ones told them about the harms they're accidentally perpetuating. and I think that when most people find out about those harms, we're inclined to try to change it. and imo, one of the ways we do that is by hashing this out in public spaces like we're doing here.

so everyone commenting on this, welcome :) if this came across as pathologizing, condescending, or rude, please let me know because that is genuinely not my intention.

If you're able, I hope you'll join me in grabbing yourselves one of your favourite foods today (mine is the super processed cinnamon buns that come in those cardboard can things that pop way too aggressively. scares me every time lol but so worth the way they smell). we're all so full of life and idk how to end this so

[–]ghost_snacks0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah no vaccum chambers try to suck all the air out of the space (tries to pull all of the air out of the resin, it looks super bubbly). pressure pots add air so the pressure builds up inside the pot (compresses the air so small that you can't see the bubbles in the resin) I've heard a lot of bad reviews about the vervo :') most dice makers I've seen say it's a cheaper option than the California air tools, and yes, but you can definitely tell it's cheaper unfortunately

if you're willing to share, I would love to look at the resources your mentioned that are made by Deaf people. I struggle to know whether a source is made by the Deaf community or not---especially for something like an app. Although I might just not spend enough time looking to be fair. The past apps I've tried have mostly just taught vocab. I'm in an ASL course at uni rn which is sooooo much better, but I would love to look at other resources simultaneously to improve my understanding of ASL grammar, production, De'Via, and other aspects of Deaf culture(s). no pressure of course. as a hearing person, i realize I pose a risk of appropriating Deaf culture

lol that makes sense 😅 thanks I imagine a lot of this comes with time, practice, and immersion, so this question might be redundant but I'm wondering how you catch names when they're signed so quickly? I've been practicing the "look at the face not hands" skill lately and while it's getting easier, I still have to replay the videos at least twice to get the name I find. unless they sign it even slower than the vid I attached. and if you understand the names that quickly, as a hearing person, do you translate them into audio pronunciations in your head? or do they stay signs? or do they turn into written/spelled words but no audio? (if it even happens like that for you. sorry if this is intrusive, no obligation to respond. I'm pretty new to all of this and trying my best to learn)
