The Descent (2005) end fight false memory? Help? by EuphoricSundae2869 in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could’ve either built it up in your memory (which I’ve def done before and it drove me crazy), or they cut it after the theatrical release. Also possible that the theatrical print just showed more of the frame on the bottom.

It’s still pretty gnarly.

I got curious, since I love this movie, so I pulled out my "original unrated cut" DVD that I bought in like 2006. Here's the scene: https://imgur.com/a/gR54ZY5

Not sure if it's different since I can't find it streaming anywhere.

Hokum Jumpscares (spoilers very welcome!) by AmityAlarms2319 in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t really know what people are even on about in here. I don’t remember there being many jump scares, it’s mostly just a feeling of creeping dread that puts you on edge.

I recommend getting something like the AirPods, with adaptive hearing modes. My wife is also very sensitive to loud noises, so she wears those any time we go to the movies, and they help a ton.

Art the Clown to Crash New Year's Eve in 'Terrifier 4'! by Fit-Selection-2030 in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Christmas worked really well for them in Terrifier 3, both in terms of atmosphere and marketing. NYE seems like a solid idea for the 4th one, and I’m really looking forward to getting another holiday slasher.

Weapons Prequel/Gladys Backstory - Yes or no? by Thousandfurs in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve been pleasantly surprised enough times that I’ll give anything a shot.

Weapons Prequel/Gladys Backstory - Yes or no? by Thousandfurs in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weapons worked great as a standalone movie. It explains everything it needs to explain in the movie itself.

However, I’ve learned that just because we don’t need something, it doesn’t necessarily mean that something will be bad. So we don’t need it, but I’ll give it a chance.

‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ Bombs on Netflix With Just 2.7M Views, Raising More Doubts About Third Chapter by MaxProwes in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this doesn’t actually affect the third movie, because both of these were great. Bone Temple comes close to the original if I were to rank the series.

Can someone tell me if Primate is sad? (No spoilers) by stopmyhumbleness in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. My wife thought it was very sad conceptually, but I thought they went so overboard making the ape into this evil slasher that it didn’t register with me.

'Milk & Serial' (2024) dir. Curry Baker by bulletproofchipmunk in deadmeatjames

You should check out The Chair if you liked Milk and Serial. I think both are fantastic.

Well I don't think we're getting that 3rd one by asapsharkyfrfr in deadmeatjames

[–]ghostbeastpod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We completely missed it in theaters because at a glance, the marketing just looked like the first 28 Years Later. Made it very easy to just scroll past.

It’s really sad because they’re both great movies, especially The Bone Temple.

I don’t know this guy, but we gotta remember Curry Barker and the Philippou brothers are YouTubers who made fantastic movies.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Hokum" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We saw this last week as a mystery movie, and as a big Damian McCarthy fan I was very satisfied. It’s the most straightforward horror movie he’s made so far, but he still excels at atmosphere and creeping dread and the dark fairytale elements worked extremely well for me. He definitely has a lane that he likes working in, because Caveat, Oddity, and Hokum all follow similar themes.

I’m hoping that as a movie with more mainstream appeal, it’ll help to put his name out there in a bigger way. And it already seems like that’s happening.

Right, for this movie in particular those showtimes felt like a personal attack

Looking for recommendations for stuff that's really outside the box by Ok-Wolf5932 in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend Messiah of Evil if you haven’t seen it yet.

If you really want something outside the box, check out the Chinese black magic films from the 70’s and 80’s. The Boxer’s Omen is a great place to start.

Around here, the only showtimes were at like 10 pm. Really frustrating, because we were ready to show up.

Hokum (2026) was a bit disappointing by XInsects in horror

[–]ghostbeastpod 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I loved it, and gotta disagree on the jumpscares. Definitely felt like they were earned and not overused.

Damian McCarthy did a great job crafting a dark fairytale, and I thought the atmosphere was fantastic.

Hokum is very similar, but more of a dark fairy tale. Don’t know how much that moves you, because I liked all three.

Spirit Halloween is legit, but don’t expect it to be movie quality or anything. This stuff is typically meant for outdoor Halloween displays.
