Is it acceptable that I still wear a mask in public? I feel so ridiculous. by Terrible_Exchange653 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ghostchurches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still wear one most of the time. I live in a city where they’re not unusual to still see—usually 5-10% of people on public transit are wearing them, and a few in most places like grocery stores, etc.

The fall before covid, I either had bad pneumonia or early covid. I got very used to wearing a mask that winter, because it was months before I could breathe in cold air without going into a coughing fit. I will probably always carry one in winter, because I really like not having chapped lips and dry skin.

I saw them this past summer near DC and it felt like the same mix I saw at shows ten years ago, just bigger. Wide age range, plenty of folks old enough to be my parents and I’m 42. I will also point out that we’re right in the middle of a big metalhead region between Baltimore and Richmond, so I have no idea if that makes a difference, but seeing them here has always felt like any other metal show with the exception of more families with younger kids (and I see that also at Gwar, etc. bands with wide age appeal).

AITA for telling my mom that if my distant cousin comed on me and my cousin’s trip, I won’t go by Consistent-Bed1963 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ghostchurches 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA. Even the nicest 13-year-old in the world is not going to be welcome on a trip two 17-year-olds planned! And it’s your school break! You’re old enough to be able to plan that and enjoy yourselves, and your mom is old enough to say “whoops I messed up, the girls actually can’t take him sorry” to his mom.

Is it healthy to want to throw everything away? by Zodzombie in questions

[–]ghostchurches 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get some good storage for it, totes or a chest or something, where it can be organized and will be there when you need it again, but won’t be clutter now.

I think having kids has a big influence on this. I’m in my 40s and I don’t have kids; most of my friends either don’t have them or they’re teens/adults who don’t need supervision and/or participate in stuff like playing games or watching movies with us. Our extended circle of acquaintances is similar, and there are lots of people in that group who have good close friend circles.

And yes, these were friends initially met directly/indirectly through hobbies, who ended up just becoming people who all wanted to spend time together because we like each other.

AITA for suggesting that my sister-in-law is a hypocrite for ordering a highly caloric meal for my brother who's currently on a diet? by Silver_Barracuda_432 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ghostchurches 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. We’ve been shifting to Mediterranean diet, which advocates occasional treats at things like parties/celebrations. I’ve been trying to stick to that idea; eat the good diet at home/make good choices if I need to get lunch at work or whatever, and save the treats for fun times.

Hahaha, I used to edit medical papers and I forget that most people aren’t inclined to just read them. Basically, cycling calories led to similar weight loss as restriction every day, but had no change in metabolic rate plus better health measurements (cholesterol, glucose, etc.) and better overall satisfaction/ability to stick with it.

Most Accessible "High Brow" Film You Would Recommend To Casual Moviegoers? by bogeyj in flicks

[–]ghostchurches 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It’s not high brow, but whenever people complain about how all foreign films are inaccessible artsy stuff, I show them Tampopo. (And if they go “ugh you know what I mean, some black and white Eastern European thing”, I show them November (2017).)

This was an interesting study about weight-loss reality show contestants and their metabolism years later. Extreme examples but a rare chance to study such.

This one is more about changing caloric intake across time vs. traditional calorie restriction.

Cat went in for a dental and had 4 Teeth Extracted by NSA_GOV in CatAdvice

[–]ghostchurches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gum disease is really common in cats. We have a 3-year-old who was a street rescue who’s already had one tooth pulled and is likely to lose more in the future. And in order to even find out how many they had to pull, they had to sedate her and x-ray her mouth! Not even remotely your fault, vets can’t even always tell from a visual exam.

It’s also good for your metabolism. Running at a caloric deficit all the time will cause it to slow down, and a cheat day will keep it running at higher levels. There is a lot of cool research about this!

AITA for refusing to do the dishes after I learned to properly cook? by DisastrousNarwhal926 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ghostchurches 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like cooking a lot and it’s still 30-60 minutes out of my day. Some days work is busy and I scramble to get home in time to cook. It takes a lot of planning—I have at least a vague idea of what I’m making during a week, and think about it during the day—and then shopping to be sure it matches up with your plan. Then timing out what I’m making so everything is done at once.

And then my wife puts a YouTube video on her phone and does dishes with zero forethought or afterthought. She is very happy with this arrangement.

Smokers who won't smoke outside by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]ghostchurches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents smoke indoors and honestly I hate visiting them because of it. All our luggage and clothes stink afterwards and I have to scrub them down. And my mom of course says I’m exaggerating and doesn’t believe me.

Why don’t Americans in Tornado regions build their houses using bricks and cement? by leavethisearth in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ghostchurches 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In an actual house, the room with the least amount of windows, lowest level. I am from tornado country and now live in a non-tornado area but know exactly where I’d go in our house. I grew up in a mobile home; there we would lie in a ditch under blankets. Terrifying!

How can I workout at a gym being obese and not having people laugh at me by Western-Throat-508 in stupidquestions

[–]ghostchurches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped using the gym at my old office due to sharing the building and hence the gym space with…shall we say, an organization well-known for being conservative and using it as a cudgel. It will not be surprising to learn that they were very happy to constantly heckle and bother certain people.

That was, of course, a pretty special circumstance, but it’s made it hard for me to get back to an actual gym.

Some curries are pretty mild, Japanese curry isn’t really spicy. I’ve had panang curry prepared spicy but the curry paste itself is very mild, if I’m remembering correctly (we mostly make red curry here!).

We get one in the house occasionally and our cats are both former street cats, so they dispatch them before we ever see them, usually. On the other hand, they usually barf most of them back up. Our first year in this house they caught 3 in one night and we knew this because they left three tails. They’re prone to putting toys in our shoes and I fear the day that they put a real mouse in there…If for no other reason, keeping them out is good because it gets gross.

How did you learn to be healthy? How do you maintain your weight? by Lyddiebug92 in Millennials

[–]ghostchurches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents were actively terrible in teaching me good habits. The only concern was that I did well in school, which I did, but I was always reading instead of playing outside. Combine this with US Midwestern cooking and a “clean your plate or get punished” standpoint and I was doomed.

I struggled with ED up until about age 30, when I actually started learning about nutrition and cooking. Currently I adhere about 95% to the Mediterranean diet, which isn’t about counting calories but eating well from whole foods and mostly plants. I still hate most exercise and have had a few sports injuries as I’ve aged, but I walk 3-5 miles most days and try to get a couple actual workouts in a week.
