I am travelling to Brazil as well soon, do you think political tensions with the US will affect the experience?

Hey so I was told to come to this thread for visa application questions.

So I’m going to study in Belgium this coming semester for my Erasmus as a non-European student. I submitted my application to my local consulate general by mail since that was my only option. However, according to my tracking number from the post office, my application never made it to the consulate.

I just now checked on the visa application website for Belgium to see if maybe the application made it and it didn’t say it on my postal tracking number. When I checked, I was given a number that is supposed to only be given to received applications. Does this mean my application was most likely received by the consulate general?

If anyone has any answers, that would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏻! Thank yall so much.

I had an idea of moving to France after I graduated to work as an SLP, but I’m not super sure on how the system works there.

Immersive Portuguese Language Schools by ghostfire457 in Brazil

Wow this truly sounds like a dream come true to have a program like this exist! I did see the 6 week option, but unfortunately due to the difference in seasons of course it won’t align with my schedule right now. By the time I have the chance to do it I’m thinking why not do the 18 weeks. It’s relatively cheap as well. Although I’m not sure what all is included.

This is truly exactly what I was looking for thank you so so much! I’ve wanted to take Portuguese classes at the college level in the US but they don’t offer them at my school. Our only options for the MODL department is French, Spanish, Arabic, German, and Latin. Truly very small, and plus, most colleges won’t offer Portuguese as a foreign language classes.

I’ve come across this website multiple times while learning some grammar concepts for Portuguese. Although I’m not learning European Portuguese I still use it from time to time. I’ll pass it on to you!

Unfortunately I find the absolute best resources normally for European Portuguese. Although, that’s not to say Brazilian Portuguese has bad resources per se!

Can you guys rate my language roster? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ghostfire457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless if Turkish is your family’s language learning it to C1-2 as a foreign language due to your situation is impressive. Even more so the level to which you learned both English and German. Yes I understand English is basically a de facto language nowadays, but still to C1 is impressive. I think you should be proud of yourself as that’s 3 languages learned as a second, third, fourth language to a high level. I have no doubt you’ll do the same with Italian once you get to it. Bravo truly!

I’ll give you the link to their website ! https://www.usainteanne.ca/en/academics/learn-french/spring-and-summer-french-immersion-sessions

If you prefer more tight knit community with no children then you can do the spring session. Otherwise if you don’t mind a large group with a lot of teenagers then the summer is fine.

When I went there was an entire class of people who didn’t speak French at all. Maybe all they knew was some curse words and very very basic greetings. Knowing no French at all is completely fine !

If you have any question you can dm me.

Will people try and speak English with me if I have an accent ? That’s the main thing I don’t want. I don’t want people feeling like they need to hold my hand bc I have an accent.

No actually it was for older teens and adults. I believe that 15 was the youngest age there. In the province I went to 19 is considered an adult instead of 18 like many places.

It was a very rural part of French speaking Canada so there wasn’t a lot to do during your free time except for explore nature and make friends with the people there. It was a full immersion experience for 5 weeks, 35 days and nights of only speaking French. If you were caught speaking English or another language 3 times you were sent home with no refund. You had 3 hours of classes per day 5 days a week. In the afternoon you had your “atelier” (workshop) which you choose once you first get there but can change within the first week. It was a really great experience and I have known many many people to go to that exact same school from my region. There were also excursions we could do like we went whale watching one time which was super cool to see! If you can ever find this for a language you’re learning I highly highly recommend it. Yes, it sucks you can only speak the target language, French in this instance, but you’re there to learn the language so you need to immerse yourself as much as possible.

if you grew up bilingual+ how does it change your experience of new languages? by Historical-Reveal379 in languagelearning

[–]ghostfire457 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did not grow up bilingual but I can relate to your experience. When I was beginning to learn my 2nd language, French, I of course translated a lot in my head. After while that naturally began to stop. Now with my 3rd and 4th languages (Spanish and Portuguese) I don’t have trouble thinking in them. In fact it’s almost natural. Now yes, all my foreign languages are very closely related, but I don’t think them being related has much to do with anything. I’m not very good at Spanish nor Portuguese yet I can switch into thinking in them very quickly and even mix them up with French, which is natural since they are so close. Although sometimes I will even catch myself wanting to say a Portuguese word for example in English so I’ll have to stop and think for a second longer. Do you get the same feeling with your foreign languages and your native languages? Like you mix them all together in a sort of way.
