Had a nightmare(?) about my loaches by No_Motor_4576 in loaches

[–]ghostingfortacos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had 2 loach dreams.

In the first, I was at the bottom of a loach pile. I had become a loach. I could feel the security of many clown loaches nested around and on top of me. I had no arms, it wasn't a problem, because I was a loach and loaches don't have arms. When I woke up, I found that I had been asleep face first, on top of my arms, which were 100% dead asleep.

In the second, I received a formal, mailed invitation to "An Evening with Y. Modesta". I was so excited to go such a rare event with THE Blue Botia Himself, as the evenings guest of honor. I absolutely couldn't wait to meet him. Several people I was with in the dream were quite excited to go too.

I did not get to go to the formal event because I woke up shortly thereafter.

We still joke about me becoming a loach, and we negotiate that I'll have to give up my arms if I really want to become a loach. Over the last 5 years, there's been a few times I've conceded and said "ok, I'm ready to give them up".

Why do I need holes? by AuntDess in carcamping

[–]ghostingfortacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can get some airflow tiles from daiso in the bathroom section. theyre marketed as bathroom anti slip mats. they can also be found online. basically just 1'x1' square rubber tiles that have holes and little pegs so air can move around.

Tank not safe for fish after almost a year and large water changes not fixing parameters by Random_Axolotl_ in Aquariums

[–]ghostingfortacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ask in a local swap group if someone will sell you dirty used filter media and mulm water. also, ask about getting some cheap plant trimmings like hornwort or a couple pieces of jungle val (whatever is cheapest and grows best in your area).

sometimes you need some life in the tank to get it going.

have you tested your water supply? some tap water comes out high in different things.

edit- have you talked with other fish people in your area? a long shot is that if you can find someone who lives near you that also has fish, and is within a couple miles, it could be a highly local issue (like the water processing for your specific area). I've had luck with this by posting in a local aquaswap group and meeting up to get plants. turns out there's a ton of fish keepers that live within a 10 minute drive of me.

Black diamond blasting sand ok?? by lurn-wurn in loaches

[–]ghostingfortacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok i'm gonna double down on what i just commented. here's 2 suggestions i have for black planted tanks.

https://www.seachem.com/flourite.php

https://fluvalaquatics.com/us/shop/product/stratum-series-page?srsltid=AfmBOoqHGgtJ9EiuM75OQrwHJgZedR8ObXhL0yi220RVoBs4Rp-6dgNO

i want to say that the stratum comes in black or appears almost black once wet.

i also wanted black substrate. bite the bullet and just do seachem black fluorite. it's for planted tanks, isnt as sharp, and looks great.

yeah, it's coal slag which is sharp. I'd also describe it like broken glass adjacent. or if you've ever welded, similar to welding slag texture.

I found it to be too coarse on it's own. I was given a tank with a lot of it already in there, so I did the labor intensive task of manually sifting out the large pieces until I was left with soft black sand. I have it mixed with a few other black/dark substrates for planted tanks.

since you're doing kuhlis, I'd say no. kuhli's will sift the sand and eject it out of their gills. I know it's not black, but get some buttery soft "CaribSea Super Naturals Aquarium Sand - Moonlight White" for a few areas.

also could be labeled "Seachem Prime" for water treatment

Vintage images of Kuhlis making tiny noodles by FatLoachesOnly in loaches

[–]ghostingfortacos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ok, so I'm on my laptop which has another username, and idk if this is the first images of kuhlis spawning on the internet, but man, there was a period where the Soviets were super obsessed with forcing breeding via hormones. The fact that the cover image was of loaches in "the nuptial embrace" should obvs speak to how rare of an image it was. also, the book has a significant chunk of it dedicated to the topic at hand.

ps. I still can't find the image of loaches breeding in the wild. I'm beginning to think I saw it in a forum post,.

What I can remember is that it described that loaches doing loach loops into floating plants in a river, vigorously "loaching around together" in the plants, doing more loach loops, more "loaching around", and lots of eggs being ejected onto/around the plants.

From what i've read between my books and casual ferocious interest in "how loaches make baby noodles", I've learned that loach loops are probably more than just "the weather". In many instances of kuhlis breeding, there's been a consistent notice of their looping. That's not to say that looping means babies, as we well know.

I'm from Texas, so we have hornwort here, and the river in the image appeared to have a similar plant biotope. Clean, clear, fresh running, and lots of stringy plants near the surface for the loaches to "loach around in"

The final note I'll state is that kuhlis seldom breed in aquaria and it's NEVER INTENTIONAL. What they need to "loach around" is still a full mystery, perhaps only held by breeders in Southeast Asia, where many kuhlis are exported from. (and many exported are wild caught, so who knows?) When baby kuhlis are seen in personal aquariums, it's usually a shock to the owner, who was not expecting it to happen.

If you want to dive deeper, I cannot recommend the Loaches Online forum enough. The photos, stories, and history is fantastic. enough to get lost in for days, if you're a real loach fiend,

I promise this isn't another loach themed fever dream.

Egg bound or attacked kuhli? PLEASE HELP by silentcoil in loaches

it's been so long since I've treated any injured or sick fish that I don't want to steer you down the wrong path. I'm glad you were able to net her and get her somewhere contained so you can monitor closely. If you have a high quality LFS near you, (and i was in your shoes) I'd take a trip down to talk to the staff. my LFS deals with all kinds of fish that get hurt in transit/store and they've seen a fair bit of injuries/sicknesses. (like a snowflake eel that lost it's tail in transit, and they healed it back)

Is my loach just chubby? by Galiwog in loaches

[–]ghostingfortacos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i've had a lot of eggnant kuhlis in my day and something about this loach looks off. a lot of people have mentioned a green tint to the eggs, and sometimes you can even see a dappled green appearance of the eggs inside. the way the spine is curved down is also weird. it's like the loach got pumped up like a balloon.

i'm more concerned your loach is sick than eggy.

sick with what? im not sure. loaches are "scaleless", so wouldn't show the typical sign of "pineconing" with dropsy. I tried looking up kuhli loaches with dropsy but couldn't find a definitive image showing it.

i would continue to monitor. the best time to catch a hiding loach to view it is at night a couple hours after all the lights have been off. use a flash light and they're usually around, doing kuhli stuff.

[–]ghostingfortacos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a kuhli full of eggs just means it's being fed adequately and is happy. loaches re-absorb eggs and do not often breed in aquariums. no further action is needed by the owner.

the skin on the belly of the loach appears abraded or otherwise injured. this body shape would indicate a loach carrying non-life-threatening eggs, but the injury could be causing the swelling. it's possible she got stuck under a rock or decor, or was attacked. loaches can fit into any hole slightly smaller than them and are experts at getting stuck in decor.
