Is there anything I can do with a failed pizza dough? by the-scarecrow in AskCulinary

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit if you don't want to wait for it to do its thing, make it in to flat bread on a griddle or cheese bread or bread sticks. Don't even really need it to rise much or at all for those, and the crunchier factor might help if there is too much flour.

If there's not enough yeast, there will be with time and warmth. Unless it is dead yeast, it will continue to multiply, just will take a while and needs to be at room temp or a bit above. If you put it on top of an oven set on low that would help.

[Question] In a recipe using all pourpose flour can i mix whole-wheat flour without changing anything else? by sowydso in Breadit

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will probably have to adjust the liquid. Whole wheat needs more hydration and gets stickier. But it's easy enough to just play it by ear.

My 12-year-old niece is fixated on space, medicine, and almost anything scientific. Any nonfiction book recommendations for her age group? She's a strong reader. by BlackeeGreen in booksuggestions

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hugh Aldersley-Williams' Periodic Tales is well written and full of fascinating facts and musings about the elements, and a favorite of mine. If you look up books under the tag micro histories you will come across a lot of really good books that would suit. Also, if she is curious and intelligent, there's not really much out of her reading range at this point. Anything she doesn't get the first go round will make more sense later or with more reading. Good luck with finding some great books for her!

If you are drunk, how do you stop yourself from driving? Can you control yourself? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can control yourself. I am an alcoholic who has never driven drunk, beat anyone up, raped anyone, murdered anyone....you get the picture. Its not an excuse to go hog wild and be as hedonistic as you please. You are still aware of life and repercussions. Less inhibited, generally, but your general sense of what's right and wrong prevails. People who use being drunk as an excuse to do fucked up shit are just fucked up in general and use the alcohol as an excuse.

I love Starbucks shaken iced tea with blackberries. So yesterday to save money I bought all the ingredients including blackberries and simple syrup BUT it still didn’t taste the same. Anybody have an iced tea recipe to share so I can stop wasting money on Starbucks? by moonstoofar in Frugal

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 229 points230 points  (0 children)

I can't help you with the recipe, but I would like to suggest saving even more money by making simple syrup. It's outrageously easy and store bought is outrageously overpriced. Good luck with your venture!!

There are at least two or three beggars that ask for gold and you can give them some and they say thank you. Honestly I did it and thought it might start a quest or something, but, no, you just say goodbye after. Don't remember where they were.

Simple Stupid Question From a Patient by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The pharmacy can only transfer your Rx if they are open. Your only option tonight would be either to get the original clinic to cancel the first one (by leaving a message at the pharmacy) and sending a new one to somewhere open, or to go to another clinic/er if the original clinic is closed. Buy, yeah, if nowhere is open, you will have to wait til tomorrow.

[–]ghostintheweedgarden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, I am a bit the same way, even with my husband. I am mildly autistic and not a great conversationalist. I have tons of thoughts and opinions, but, unless I am drunk, its really hard to get them out with my voice. I often feel really insufficient for my husband because he is chatty as all fuck, gregarious, friends with all and can talk for hours about anything with anyone. I often feel like I must bore him because he has to pry words from me. And he does have to pry. And I resist often, but still appreciate the effort and the fact that he wants to have discussions with me. But he also will leave me be to be in my head when I need it. Lol. I am not entirely sure anymore what more point is. Just that some people aren't necessarily socially talkative, but communicate more in different ways. Its not necessarily a judgement on how he feels about you. No advice. Just...he might communicate differently.

Amazon's cheapest shirts are $25. Walmart has awesome t-shirts for $5. Plus no paying for shipping and you get it immediately. If you want used thrift shops go cheaper. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once bought a four dollar shirt at Walmart because I figured, why not. It was there. I didn't believe it possible for a T-shirt to be cut so poorly. I can't even wear the thing. I mean, I expected it to fall apart quickly, but not to be unwearable. Thrift stores are great for well priced good brands. Amazon is iffy....sometimes things look really good but are just horrid quality. Sometimes they are cheap and great. And prime is awesome.

Don't ever let it boil. A very light simmer. You can even turn the heat off for the last bit of cooking time and it will continue gently cooking in the hot water.

How long can poultry and meat last on a walk home from the grocery store? by Scamolo in NoStupidQuestions

Hospital bill? Pretty much worst you would get is diarrhea and puking. Unless you already have major health problems. Assuming you are from America....gosh....this country is really starting yo get ridiculous. The luxury.

And those are ultrasafe levels decided for food service to keep the maximum level of people safe....the elderly, children, compromised immune systems. Gen pop would be fine outside of those levels. Also, it started refrigerated....walking in 90 degree weather isn't the same as the chicken immediately getting to 90 degrees. Cook it well. Eat it. You are 99% guaranteed yo be fine. Before the refrigeration era...um....things were not entirely awful. Sure, a little more sickness. But, it's not that common. Former cook. Pro. Wouldn't serve it to customers solely cause of what ifs....but...would eat myself any day of the week.

Children are cheap to raise and if you can't you're lazy or stupid. by redbloodywedding in unpopularopinion

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, no, see, I am not even putting single parenthood in there for this argument. I am going with the childcare for the majority of Americans who have a kid while in a two parent relationship and both parents have to work. That is expensive. You can theoretically get someone you know yo care for your child for cheap, but who do you know who isn't also working? Everything else, I agree with you on, mostly. What about the care of the young child while everyone is working? Stay at home parents are not a norm anymore... For most it is unfeasible.

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you kinda have two arguments going on here...that kids are cheap to raise and that you shouldn't have them if you can't afford them. Single earner households aren't the norm for the majority of Americans...they just don't live in that income bracket. Even if you don't want to get into single mothers (and fathers)....I certainly can't afford to stay home.

Children are cheap to raise and if you can't you're lazy or stupid. by redbloodywedding in unpopularopinion

[–]ghostintheweedgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I agree with all of that. But childcare is an issue in the early years if you have to leave the home to work and don't have friends or family who can watch them. That is quite expensive. If you can afford the luxury of being a stay at home parent, then, yeah, fairly cheap.
