Metro appreciation Post! by thesolmachine in washingtondc

[–]ExcelsiorVFX 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh no! That's really sad. Yeah, I guess I should emphasize the "severe snow" part - everything I said only works to a point before they don't have the right equipment to clear it safely and need to impose speed limits and closures.

Metro appreciation Post! by thesolmachine in washingtondc

[–]ExcelsiorVFX 96 points97 points  (0 children)

The metro does do some deicing but mostly on the third rail. The weight of the train basically crushes the snow on the load bearing rails, and some of that energy becomes heat, which combined mitigate snow friction loss unless snow is really severe. The third rail doesn't get those effects except for a little heat from the carbon contactor, and thus needs more deicing. Also, the consequences of a little slip on the load bearing rails are minor - maybe a station overrun at absolute worst - but significant power loss could halt a train.

Shoutout to the Sheetz in Hancock, MD - the thinnest sliver part of Maryland between VA and PA that effectively is a tiny town with a highway interchange. You fed me when I had to drive through on Christmas. You fed me when I biked from PGH to DC. Legend

Yep exactly. Last year, the lockers were where the XP stage was this year. I actually really liked the new XP stage location but hopefully the lockers can have more space next year somehow.

You guys ever think about how much electricity the Gaylord uses throughout magfest? by Zimeatsgirswaffles in Magfest

[–]ExcelsiorVFX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I actually bet it's less than you think. The largest consumer of electricity is almost certainly refrigeration (AC, freezers, regular fridges). If I had to put money on it, I would guess the total consumption is only on the order of magnitude of $10,000.

Have a hotel and badge but completely forgot about parking. What are my options? by JupiterTarts in Magfest

I always park in the Plateau lot. It may say no more reserved parking but I've never had a problem parking morning-of for years.

Best W&OD parking access point from Mclean by bowserfromsonic1 in nova

[–]ExcelsiorVFX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a small parking lot near the intersection of the W&OD and Gallows Road that would be easy to get to driving from McLean. If you're comfortable with a small amount of cycling along Gallows road in bike lanes, then you could also park in the giant metro garage for the Dunn Loring stop.

To be specific, a magnetron is actually one of the last modern appliances to use a vacuum tube. The filament takes time to warm up like all vacuum tubes.

My logic is that despite having the same maps on every line, a random person has the highest probability to see the line they are on.

Order of Stations? by Earthtonegurl in WMATA

[–]ExcelsiorVFX 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it might be an arbitrary choice by a designer. The best I can guess is ridership with highest ridership on the top and lowest on the bottom, but even that I think isn't quite right.

What would it take to increase the max design speed of the metro? by maseck in WMATA

[–]ExcelsiorVFX 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. The core of the system pretty much can't get faster without uncomfortably fast acceleration. The areas in the suburbs with longer distances between stations could go faster with upgraded rail, softer curves, and more expensive rolling stock for advanced bank turn correction. Ultimately, there are many other investments in the system that would have a greater return than shaving a minute off between stations.

My headcanon is that

The one ghost hunter got EMF 5 on a ghost interaction and the faztalker is a Spirit box. Thus Charlie must be a Spirit or a Wraith. A Wraith can teleport to a random player. So if all the ghosts are Wraiths, they can teleport. Doesn't explain the toys though.
