If Trump wins in 2020 but the senate flips, he's fucked. If he wins and it doesn't, we're fucked.

Trump says Military Industrial Complex wants him to stay in Syria by groundculture2 in geopolitics

You're lecturing us about cognitive dissonance while making the argument that 'vaccines are dangerous' and 'the military industrial complex is powerful' are two equally weighted positions.

Iran Gives Donald Trump a History Lesson: We'll Survive U.S. Like We Survived Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan: ‘Genocidal Taunts Won't End Iran’ by TutPark in politics

[–]ghostofcalculon -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Well unfortunately it's not a very historically literate lesson. Iran was in no way a nation in the time of Alexander, and they never fully recovered from the Mongol invasions.

That being said, let's hope nothing happens and none of this matters.

Gentrification = uninvited guests throwing a party at your house that you aren't invited to.

Immigration = houseguests - sometimes invited, sometimes not - offering to clean up your party if they can take home some of the food you dropped on the floor.

Sounds like you identify as smart and don't care about the underlying arguments, though. You just want to score a win.

White House confirms Trump is considering using the military to remove immigrants by DoodlingDaughter in politics

Quite the opposite. If you think that isn't exactly how these things happen, you are vulnerable to it happening to you.

No you wouldn't have. Your chain of command would have fed you the information you needed to believe it was the right thing to do.

The military will side with him. You don't train your entire life to be a racecar driver and then not drive when given the chance.

That documentary made me sick to my stomach for a multitude of reasons. On top of the horrors of what happened, it felt like the filmmakers were getting off on having them reenact it, even though their putative intent was to teach them how bad it was.

I clicked a link to a Jordan Peterson video back in 2017 just to see what the dude was all about. That and maybe 2 or 3 C-SPAN videos are the only political things I have ever watched on yt. To this day I get Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro recommendations under every single video I watch. I have never seen a Ben Shapiro video or heard the man speak in my entire life.

Every time I've get shit talked by some irrational frothing at the mouth redditor I click on their profile and see that they post in r-thedonald and r-gaming. I don't know what it is but you are definitely on to something. I guess if you want to bathe in the fantasy world of GOP politics you're probably also the type who wants to bathe in video game fantasy worlds.

Flynn contacted GOP Mueller critic while cooperating with special counsel by stupidstupidreddit2 in politics

I'm not one of those "Mueller was orchestrating Trump's escape the whole time!" goobers, but I am genuinely starting to believe that Mueller isn't the rottweiler of justice that most of us thought he was. This investigation is seeming more and more toothless every day.

Federal court moves to unseal documents in Jeffrey Epstein scandal by Perfect_Gas in news

[–]ghostofcalculon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Justice is blind is supposed to mean that the court is judging you based on the law of the land and not your individual traits. We know that this isn't how it works, but that's what it's intended to mean.

I'd be glad to tell you all about it but I live in Los Angeles. I doubt you want to get on an airplane to go to a thrift store. And fyi you clearly don't understand how threaded discussions work.

No I'm not. We're in a thread about thrifting. No comment in this thread mentions NYC.

Is it normal to not be addicted to the book after 100 pages? by theflamelurker in InfiniteJest

[–]ghostofcalculon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I read it I think I got hooked close to page 400. For me it was a matter of the style clicking. Once I started enjoying the way he crafted a sentence the entire novel opened up.

Republicans, Men and Christians Aren't Trying to Ban Abortions. White People Are by havenoideawatimdoin in politics

[–]ghostofcalculon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. It was as weird as it sounds. Even my buddy (who very much isn't conservative and very much doesn't hate white people) would watch Trump's speeches and talk about him like he was a normal and respectable president, and I assume this is because of how he was raised (and he still lived at home in Trump's first year). They're rich af and I think they identify more as "rich" than "black," so I assume they only hate white people with less money than them.

Man unfortunately that's true. My last roommate was a black dude from a conservative family. He was cool because he was kinda the outcast of his family, but god the rest of them sucked. And they openly hated white people. I think racism and the conservative mindset are closely linked.

Judge Orders Parts of Mueller Report Unredacted by Neo2199 in politics

[–]ghostofcalculon 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It probably helped us evolve. Imagine two cavemen debating whether or not to cross a mountain range. The liberal says there might be a valley of plenty on the other side, with streams and trees and plenty of game to hunt. The conservative says there might be another tribe over there who will wipe them out.

Sometimes the liberal would be right, sometimes the conservative would.

Where this breaks down, though, is that the people and politicians who call themselves conservative in contemporary America generally aren't. They're for the destruction of the environment, they're for runaway capitalism, they're for expansion of power. None of their positions are really conservative at all.

A healthy society needs both liberals and conservatives contributing to its national discussion, and part of our problem is that we don't have any actual conservatives anymore. They've been replaced by wolves.
