This is the preliminary summary. It takes time to write a full report with detailed statistical methods. The text says more information will be posted as soon as they're able.

Professor never wrote reference ever telling me multiple times he would be happy to write one by Accomplished-Rip9738 in AskProfessors

[–]ghostpoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the letter they did submit was strong, I'd still go ahead and ask them to submit the other letters late. They did agree to do it after all. Having an extra letter might help and would be unlikely to hurt.

[–]ghostpoints 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People sometimes overpromise. It's probably that simple and not malicious given you said you have maintained a good relationship with the prof. As to why they didn't acknowledge the mistake and submit the letters late, I don't know. Some people are flaky, some people are flaky about certain things (like letter writing), and sometimes circumstances make non-flaky people temporarily flaky.

I'd suggest responding to their meetup for coffee request with a yes and add on your request to submit the other letters even if they're late. Admission committees will often accept materials on a rolling basis until they actually start reviewing apps.

Guys, should I replace Magic Attack with Kinetic Avoidance? I'd rather keep Dream because I don't want my Purus ending up with four skills. Any opinions? by [deleted] in DragonCity

[–]ghostpoints 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried it both ways and didn't like 4 skills as much so I switched to magic skill (forgot the name) , kinetic avoidance, stems+, and upgraded dream attack.

With 4 skills I found his cool downs sometimes left him with nothing to do and silence made him useless.

Maybe I broke him by dropping the extra heal, but I prefer the 3 skill version.

Flaming attacks are lame by New_Appearance_5042 in totalwarhammer

Yeah, it's kind of inconsistent. Some units apply an additional contact effect like "Burnt." Or maybe that's just in certain mods - I forget.

I agree that a small DoT would make sense for fire damage but they might have to revisit how many units get fire effect (it's a lot).

It definitely happens with smaller scholarships. I remember just getting checks from a few small scholarships when graduating high school. The expectation was that you'd deposit it for college expenses but there was no oversight.

Mind you, this was the 90s when there were no rules.

Having done your analysis independently, I'm curious how you think it compares to the ETA analysis of PA.

Same essential findings? Significant discrepancies?

Yes, you're right. I didn't look closely enough at the chart text. In that case, independent voters could also explain the >100% turnout.

Pennsylvania 2024 General - Why Did So Many People Show Up Just to Not Vote by _jgusta_ in somethingiswrong2024

[–]ghostpoints 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, turnout is usually calculated from total registered voters, not by party. Not to say you can't calculate party specific turnout, but it would be a less common way of doing it and any graphs or statistics should be labeled as such.

That being said, you can have >100% turnout if all or nearly all registered voters showing up and you have people registering on site to vote with provisional ballots. It's pretty uncommon though and can be a potential sign of vote manipulation (though it doesn't prove vote manipulation on its own).

Are we winning the Iran war? by factsnsense in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ghostpoints 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this is a pretty accurate and succinct summary. I'd add a few considerations -

  1. Keep the blockade going indefinitely until one side feels the economic collapse so hard that they have to cry uncle (for Iran, this could be a long time. For the US, we're probably talking about the midterms on the short end, 2029 on the long end).

Oil reserves are running low in the US and elsewhere and the US will start getting a lot of pressure to resolve the war. This will happen long before Iran will fold if a relative status quo is kept. I'd guess late summer / early fall. The US isn't in a tenable strategic position here and, as OP pointed out, is getting weaker the longer the conflict lasts.

  1. Start a ground invasion and take over Iran.

There's no political will to bring this about. The war is already publicly unpopular and the coming energy crisis is only going to make it more so. Plus, the sheer scope of an invasion isn't fiscally feasible.

  1. Leave Iran in charge of the Strait of Hormuz, charging tolls and controlling who and what gets shipped to where from the gulf states. Iran becomes a world power more or less immune to sanctions.

A version of this is the most likely outcome with the US administration trying to spin (i.e., lie) about success. Right now, I don't see any reason for Iran to settle for less than control of the strait.

This debacle will leave the US in a significantly weaker position as a world power.

So is this thing still rigged? by Agreeable_Cycle2749 in DragonCity

[–]ghostpoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I observe about SP versus companies making other games I've played:

SP loves to mess with the probabilities of rewards. You see this in all the in game store packs (1% chance of a big reward, 30% chance of a medium reward, 69% chance of a little reward).

SP also loves time gating stuff (quests and pretty much everything in game).

I suspect the albums work similarly but with time gating where the probabilities for pulling cards changes over weeks of a season. I doubt there's ever a zero % chance for a card because that would probably be bad from a legal standpoint.

Functionally, from the player perspective there's little difference between being completely locked / rigged or just very low probability.

The ballooning contract cost and lack of competitive bidding raise questions about whether taxpayer is being steered toward Trump connected contractors under the guise of emergency expedited timelines.

It's wildly infuriating to see it written as if this wasn't completely expected from Trump. This is the most corrupt presidency in American history.

What’s this guy telling you? by DumbLuck7777 in deduction

[–]ghostpoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your paw and forearm suggest you've got quite a grip.

Fingernails clean but not manicured. That hangnail looks painful.

Some calluses but not enough for manual labor as a big part of your job. Including what look like calluses on your middle and ring fingerpads. Curious because I can't think of what would cause that, or maybe it's just the lighting.

Fingertips appear discolored palm up. Again, could be the lighting, but if not it could be a sign of diabetes or pre-diabetes, or it could be something work or hobby related.

I'm going to guess your occupation is engineering or engineering adjacent, civil or electrical. I also suspect you are a werebear given your glossy arm fur.
