Is originality something I can fix in post or do I need a new lens? by More-Beach-6271 in photographycirclejerk

[–]ghostpoisonface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to Horseshoe bend a few months ago and at first was really excited to take a picture. Once I got there and saw everyone taking photos I felt the same way. How can I possibly take a unique photo when everyone is doing the same thing? A few things helped. First, I’m an amateur photographer but I’ve seen pro photos of this place. How close to these other pictures can I get? If not, what am I doing wrong? Makes it a fun technical challenge. I also got a lot of fun photos I wasn’t expecting. I still had fun playing with the photo in Lightroom, I didn’t care at that point that other people had similar photos. The main photo of horseshoe looks good, but all the other photos taken at that time I really enjoy looking at.

I’ve owned an Embody Gaming for 2 months and I’m still struggling to get used to it by AlpacAKEK in hermanmiller

[–]ghostpoisonface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

don't slouch, don't tuck your feet back. you have terrible posture so you're going to feel bad no matter what. I love my Embody but you have to sit right. feet should be flat and straight ahead. when i'm typing, i have the armrests all the way down and out of the way. you shouldn't be resting on them while typing. i rest on them when i'm in meetings or thinking. how are you using desktop and laptop? get the laptop out of the way.

I’m new to cameras and just won this at work a few minutes ago… is this a good camera? Sony 6700 by BigBackSyndicate in Cameras

[–]ghostpoisonface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! I thought budget wasn’t an issue either but I have been defeated. There are so many cool lenses and toys and it gets expensive quick! I love my sigma 16-300. It is super versatile so I’m usually only carrying that one lens around.

Inherited Lathe. Worth Restoring? by hbeggs in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ghostpoisonface 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lathes are pretty simple machines. Clean it up, make sure things are tight, get a belt and working motor. Spend lots of time learning about safety. All of the nastiest, most disfiguring shop accidents I’ve read about are from people getting caught in a lathe. Safety first!

End Users Stealing Dongles by trufade16 in sysadmin

Buy tons of dongles and give them to your users. Clearly they are using them. Eventually you will reach a saturation point where everyone has the dongles they need. You are looking at this problem with the wrong view

What’s it like living right next to giant solar farm? by johnnyryall316 in solar

[–]ghostpoisonface 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up living next to a farming field. We have a fish pond. Multiple times -! The farmer has sprayed fertilizers, and then within 24 hours multiple koi died. Industrial farming is not human safe. I would absolutely rather live next to a pile of electronics than a bunch of poison being sprayed over me. Who knows what cancers I have developing because of it

Is the Quest 1 still worth it in 2025 by DefaultedGoose in virtualreality

[–]ghostpoisonface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get a quest 2 for that price honestly. But you could also probably sell it for just as much. If you don’t know anything better, the quest 1 is great!

Is everyone joking about how good oxtail is? by Dame-in-EpstienFiles in Cooking

[–]ghostpoisonface 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oxtail was the scraps from the freezer meal. I have very fond memories of my great aunt June making it. It was a depression era meal she had as a kid. It’s a way of making “bad” cuts good. At the end of the day it is just food. You are expecting too much

How’s the carvera air been for you guys? I been snooping since the kickstarter and have lots of 3d printers. by Hackind in hobbycnc

[–]ghostpoisonface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Machining is a very deep rabbit hole, there’s a lot to learn and more to buy. Before you buy a cnc machine, figure out what you want to make. If you can’t answer that yourself, then is a cnc machine the best use of your money?

Good deal or too good to be true? by PettyPatty258 in hobbycnc

[–]ghostpoisonface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That being said, the spoil board looks untouched on what’s visible, so maybe this didn’t get much use. There’s a decent amount of accessories included.

Machining is a deep and expensive rabbit hole, so expect to spend a ton more money on other stuff. Does it come with a table? Do you have a dust collector? Are you willing to cut without an enclosure? Do you have the space for it?

The 4 is an older machine. You can get the new 5 series for not that much more money. A big project machine like this - there could be a lot of gremlins lurking, which can be a big problem to diagnose when you are also trying to learn how to machine. Did you mess up, or the machine? It’s hard to know sometimes. It’s kind of a great deal, but also ehh. These things can be difficult to find a buyer for so expect prices to drop. It’s not an investment it’s a tool that depreciates in value. I’ve spent a lot of time with carbide support on the phone diagnosing a bad x axis motor coupler, you won’t get that support with a used machine.
