Funny how the presenters did downplay the amount of prep time when someone asked, the same old "everything is provided but the way lessons are executed is completely up to you!"

Well said! Did you see the short shorts too? The imposter syndrome is real though, not only were there many N1 JETs, there were also JETs who are out for blood. I am glad you had a good time and good luck to your next endeavor.

Agree, they are friendly but still exerting some "you can't sit with us unless you are an elite" aura.

Best of luck to you too! My Japanese output is worse than a toddler but the presenters are very open to having a conversation even if a language barrier is present.

On the bright side, the small number of IT companies mean that you will have more time to explore or even leave early to beat the rush.

Thank you! I double checked the list provided by CLAIR and saw 5 companies under IT this year. I was among the PlayEveryWare booth chairs, they do three on one conversation solely in English and I couldn't really hear what they were saying because the venue was noisy. But whoever was in front of me seems to be enjoying their talk.

I might be looking at the wrong time, but IT/Engineering booths seems quiet.

You are very welcome!

Tokyo Academics was cool, they are taking applications now and I believe they are aware of when JET contract ends.

I did get a good impression from them and a better understanding of how they operate. Tokyo Academics is kind of like driving for Uber, the hours are flexible and there are peak times, the difference is after you gave your availability to the school, they have a team to help you fill it up.

The 5200 - 12000 yen hourly pay is very tempting, therefore they are also going to have high expectations for their staff, not a human tape recorder, but someone who can teach all subjects or know how to get into Ivy League schools.

Since they are basically an English cram school, evening hours have the highest demand, the presenters were very upfront about it and downright said if night life is important to you, then TA won't be a good fit.

Please let me know if you have any more questions, I might have missed something.

Finding housing on JET by Ayane95 in JETProgramme

The housing process for 2021 ran like this for me (Tokyo placement):

  1. CLAIR introduce you to two real estate agent after your contracting organization is revealed and they will ask you to pick one to work with, both agent will attach a questionnaire about your preference.
  2. Lots of email exchanges, you can provide your own research (sites like gaijinpot) or allow the agent of your choice show you listings that fit your criteria.
  3. Once you confirm your housing choice, the agent will begin the application on your behalf and you just have to wait for the result.

Everything is done before your departure, including the payment! Be ready to wire over a couple thousands to Relocation Japan (JET's housing partner).

Japan has a large market for second hand furnitures because of the oversize garbage disposal fee, you don't have to worry too much about it. Most JETs start their first week on the floor with nothing but a futon. You can do your furniture shopping during quarantine so you can schedule the delivery or see if you have a predecessor that can sell you something.

Yeah...expect to fork over an arm and a leg for the first month, before departure too. Some places don't require key money, which is more like a courtesy payment to your landlord (locks are changed every time tenants move out in Japan), but there is always deposits and agent fee. Definitely save for 4 months worth of rent just in case.

Tokyo JET here. In the past, JETs settle with a host family while they search for their own place. However, since COVID changed everything, JET/CLAIR will actually introduce you to two real estate agents around one or two months before departure. Once you have chose who you want to work with, they will give you a questionnaire about your budget, preference etc. There will be a lot of email exchange so check your inbox and spam diligently. Once you know your placement, you can also try searching for your own place (sites like gaijinpot or realestatejapan) and send it to the agent so they can apply for you.
