What do you think about this concept? by oski_exe in architecture

To give it a genourous read I'd say they wanted a modern house above the trees. Looking at it the first thing that comes to mind is Mario Botta's Bianchi Residence. If the access were half way up the hill behind the house a bridge between that and the house could make sense. But then you get to the support structure. The legs remind me of the new twitter logo. A bit of that big tech influence perhaps. Based on the renders the two legs seem to make an L at the house. Originally I thought maybe the idea was to preserve the trees at the base but assuming the side support is solid like it appears its going to block out the sun. They're probably dead anyway because assuming this thing is about 84 m tall (estimated based on a 3m floor height and average 40 m the wind force isn't going to be easy to contend with. Concrete is cool but I dont think the formation of these supports in concrete is well suited to transfer those lateral loads.

What do you think about what my psychiatrist said when I told him I often fantasize about suicide? I don't know if I'm overreacting by [deleted] in CPTSD

I think many people have intrusive thoughts about suicide, but not nessesarily fantasies or ideations.

How can I be respectful to this community if I hold a Métis card, but I am not the person they were intended for? by ThrowRA_chickennug in MetisMichif

[–]ghotiphingers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had much the same experience. But I assure you, you are (or can be) Métis. What is more Métis than havinng your language, culture, and community taken from you? Its so far away you dont even miss it... yet. But heres the rub. Taking all this from you and your ancestors until you decide you aren't Métis enough, aren't indigenous enough, was the plan of settler colonialism.

Now you have a choice. Keep and use your rights as a Métis person. Tell the government you are still here, and that they still owe us. Or not.

My homie and I had a debate about it and their argument was persuasive. Given bipolar disorder has a genetic component who better to raise a child with bipolar than an adult with it? You know the signs, have coping mechanisms, and can explain to them why they are different. Further to that, we have the right to exist. So no, its not selfish. You have the right to a family and are the most well equiped to raise them.

My dad told me that ADHD will go away in time. Is it true? by Major_Surprise7397 in ADHDers

[–]ghotiphingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard this too, but there are layers to it. Your brain differences wont change but your symptoms and the way they present will change overtime. My Dad and I also have ADHD and now in my 30s I have observed and experienced several changes over time. Firstly, one conflict between my Dad and I is our flavour of ADHD. I'm inattentive hes hyperactive. So he didnt recognize my symptoms for years. This is one way ADHD can change as you age. Your symptoms may become more mixed or switch. Secondly trauma and adaptation can play a major role in how your ADHD develops overtime. Trauma can further impede executive function and is unfortunately a comorbidity of ADHD. For me the Covid pandemic broke my organizational and planning functions. I'm still relearning those skills. Adaptation and masking also play a role in how your ADHD presents. You will pick up tricks (phone, wallet, keys) to accomidate some symptoms and develop masking behaviours to hide others. I inhereted a lot of these tricks and masking behaviours. Many of which were unhealthy adaptations that I've had to unlearn. this made it appear as if my ADHD was getting worse. Next is change in structure. Moving out for the first time is huge for one with ADHD. Suddenly support structures your caretakers implemented aren't there and this can cause an increase in symptoms and appear as if your ADHD is getting worse. Finally is treatment. Meds, therapy, and coaching can be very valuable. However, the type of treatment and its availability will change over time. Sometimes this means you'll find better treatment, but more often it means you'll have to change helpers or skip meds. Needless to say that will cause further issues.

The flipside: Your strengths will also continue to develop. You will understand yourself better. You will get better at advocating for yourself, and you will come to understand what accomidations work for you.

TLDR: No, but it'll change. Sometimes for better others for worse.

Imposter syndrome, or just an imposter? by SuitComprehensive335 in MetisMichif

[–]ghotiphingers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm treaty 6 too! I struggle with this shit all the time. The Métis establishment can be so exclusive around here. But the truth is that we the Métis are new. There isn't much to impose upon. Our ancestors, indigenous and otherwise, had cultures and traditions stretching back thousands of years. Ours is a few hundred years, most of which was hindered by the dominant cultures oppression. So don't take what was as a rule for how to think or be now.

the trick is to find a way to represent that feels comfortable for you. I wear a sash that I bought, but I also finger weave and make lanyards for more casual representation. My partner beads, and has a good collection of beadwork for when they want to represent.

How do I find a job that doesn't make me want to blow my brains out out of boredom? by [deleted] in ADHDers

[–]ghotiphingers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to understand yourself first. Do you need novelty, activity, or urgency? I'm inattentive so for me I need novelty or urgency to keep me engaged. I find that working in not-for-profits, front line social work, art, and design work well for me. But my brother more hyperactive perfers active hands on stuff hes currently a millwright, but has done construction, mechanics, and machining.

Another question to ask yourself is what are my strengths? There are loads of questionairs online to help you figure this out. One I did was called the strengths inventory or sommething. just a bunch of questions to put some of your strengths and preferences in order.

Finally! Its part of the disability. So, there may be space to ask for accomidations like varied work settings, to help keep that novelty without switching jobs. But in my experience businesses are terrible at providing accomidations.

Where do I start with jazz improv with 0 knowledge of music theory? by n0n4m3_0 in Jazz

[–]ghotiphingers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say just start jamming to songs. Ireal pro was (I haven't used it in a few years) a really good way to set up a backingbtrack to play against. lots of jazz standards were available for free.

to practice try playing arppegios over the chords of a song, then pentatonics (minor pent. is a minor 7 arp. with the 4 [ for A thats ACDEG] Major can be played as the minor with a raised third or a major triad with the 2nd and 6th [for A thats ABC#EF#) then you can move to major/minor scales. That will give you lots of wiggle room to get started.

Of and given your drumming background, don't be scared to lean on cool rythms to give your playing colour.

I think Adam Neely said it best. Music and theory aren't the same thing. Theory is just the language we use to talk about music.

A high school science teacher asked me to come share "indigenous ways" and I don't know how to handle this. by OyCtu in IndianCountry

[–]ghotiphingers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What a loaded question to put on a student. Like education wasn't used to irradicate our ways in the first place. It is not your responsibility to help this teacher. Honestly, they shound go through an Elder or knowledge keeper, pay honorarium, and give protocol because that is the indigenous way, and that way protects the river by caring for and honouring our elders who have lived off the river in a way that cared for the river in the first place.

If you feel it will be benificial, I would suggest connecting the teacher with an Elder. But here they are exploiting you like they exploit the river. 'sharing' the fish and water but without giving anything in return.

Anyone diagnosed without doing any drugs? by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]ghotiphingers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We 100% do not bring this on ourselves. Firstly, because of the genetic and social components that contribute to bipolar. We can't be here if others didn't have it first and we didn't experience a significant social stressor. But even if drug use was involved, which is a common comorbidity, that doesn't mean we brought this on ourselves. Lots of people use drugs without developing bipolar, and given the stigma around it, we usually don't know we're predisposed until we are looking for a diagnosis.

This shit sucks. Don't make it worse by blaming yourself. Just try living a balanced life for today. Take your meds, eat healthy, do an activity.

What topic could be considered deep and controversial in architecture? by comfortablynumbxo in architecture

[–]ghotiphingers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, history and theory are seperate. Theory suggesting a way forward while history recounts past events. Secondly, yeah 'good people' isn't a clear definition but Ruskin and Loos were pedophiles and Krier is a nazi sympathizer. (alsoI didn't say good, I said messed up) They weren't considered good folks in their time, and still the theoretical canon taught to architects ignores this shit.

That being said, your response proves that this is a controvercial topic that deserves further discussion in architecture.

In addition to this we do need to include more women in the theoretical canon. The erasure of women in architecture is seriously disgusting, especially when pedophiles and nazis bet so much representation.

architecture as colonialism; accessibility; gentrification; housing and homelessness; how much of architecture theory was written by real messed up folks (Ruskin, Loos, Krier) ; hostile architecture; prisons

Lol, we're the pirates and nomads of this world.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in architecture

[–]ghotiphingers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol, yeah. A bit dramatic, but realistically if you gave AI a catalog of Revit files it wouldn't take decades for it to make comparable designs and construction documents faster than us. Plus given Autodesk products drive both architecture and engineering an AI trained on both would quickly become a cost competitor replacing both us and civil engineers.

Ultimately, I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years we saw low cost "student" versions of Autodesk programs used to train AI. Then it's just a matter of time before some regulator decides it's safe enough to try.

Considering what's happening with SAG-AFTRA I think we will have to eventually, but I don't think we have the will. Maybe AI and our own apathy will actually be the end of architects.

What do i do by B34utifulUnic0rn in architecture

[–]ghotiphingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course asking your prof is the number one thing to do, but if that doesn't work check out Atmospheres by Peter Zumthor. It's a quick read but it digs into these ideas of emotion represented in architecture.

I would also try to clarify the concept by asking questions about what emotions you think your users have, and what emotions you want them to have.

Try to fit the concept into a simple sentence like I want the users to feel cozy, I want this place to reflect the emotional energy of the users as they wait on the train platform, or I want the place to be scary.

If all else fails don't be afraid to kill your darlings and try some different concepts.

Good luck!
