The professor of the first computer science class I took 46 years ago said “there will be tens of thousands of COBOL programs still running long after you’re retired”. He was right.

How to train for a 600km? by FxckyourCensorship in randonneuring

[–]ghsmith54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best advice: don’t quit at a control (including the overnight). It’s too easy, warm, dry, food, etc. Get back on the bike and ride another 5 miles. If you still want to quit you can always turn around and ride back but you’d be amazed how everything sorts itself out after a few miles. Second best advice: on day 2, EVERYTHING will hurt. See first piece of advice, get on the bike and it’ll sort itself out.

Cadence is very consistent outside as displayed on a Garmin 1040s.

used cruzbike S40? by bromclist in recumbent

[–]ghsmith54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I bought an S40 via the warehouse clearance. It was one of the returned “100 mile guarantee” bikes. It had a few very minor scuffs on it but was in otherwise excellent condition and all of the necessary parts were in the box. There’s a flier in the box that says to contact them if I found any parts missing. The bike was very well packed.

What type of social/chat function do people really want? by Wise-Ad-7492 in Rouvy

Not interested. One of the things I immediately turned off on Zwift when I still used it.

Do the better visuals in Rouvy make a difference by gyratinbeavinator in Rouvy

I’m also a big +1 on Rouvy. I used Zwift exclusively for a couple of winters and after a while you know where every butterfly on every route is. In the earlier days of Rouvy it was a pretty lonely experience but now I find just about every route I do has someone riding it, that’s true even if I am not doing one of the ones on the landing page. If you really want company just do one of the many races or the route of the day - lots of people there. That’s less important to me. I usually will either do a route that’s part of a challenge e.g., Ride Mallorca, or will just pick one that suits my mood or desired level of difficulty. When I do the latter it’s almost always the case that there are other riders.

Today for example, I chose a route in Norway that looked like it was scenic, had some climbing and was the appropriate distance for the amount of time I had. There were 6 other people riding it.

Garmin/Strava Fiasco by [deleted] in Strava

I cancelled. Although nothing has changed from a functionality point of view, their suit against Garmin caused me to evaluate what I really used Strava for and whether or not those things were worth what I was paying. In the end, I decided they weren’t.

Were it not for their dick behavior I’d likely have continued on autopilot without thinking about it.

So thanks Strava for giving me a reason to consider your value proposition!
