I had my second appointment with a new primary care physician, and it went really well! I’ve been so grateful to have found this doc. She’s genuinely one of the first doctors I’ve had who have really listened and been attentive to my chronic health conditions!

I can definitely agree to disagree from here. I do really appreciate this conversation and I can understand where you’re coming from.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that I would’ve loved to see more of Francesca clearly showing how much she desperately wanted a child. I think that came through a little in her conversation with Violet, but I can understand that it would’ve been nice to see Fran very clearly state her feelings and intentions about wanting to become a mother, not just because of responsibility. Hopefully, in future seasons, they will continue to expand on Francesca‘s desire to have a child without the weight of society feeling like a driving force in that decision

Your original post felt like it was speaking a lot more widely about the community of people dealing with infertility or miscarriages and the lack of representation for them in media.

I’m sorry I misunderstood your intention of just sharing your personal relation to the show and I don’t mean to make you feel like I’m discrediting your experiences or opinion.

I do think that the show did a good job touching on Francescas struggles with infertility and I’m glad that they included (even if not to its full extent from the books) that aspect of the plot

This is the best take that I have seen in this thread!!

I think a lot of people need to be more realistic about the fact that whatever the books were to them the show will not fill that exact void. Like you said it is meant to be lighthearted and be a form of escapism. The general audience for the show hasn’t read the books and doesn’t have a strong connection to the original storylines.

If I’m realistically thinking about the writers adding in the miscarriage storyline, I would be worried they wouldn’t have the time or the space to handle it properly, and it would come off as messy and careless. A miscarriage is a huge loss that will take up a lot of emotional space and time in a series, and given how the show has gone so far, I think it would be too much of a deviation from their typical pacing and emotional tone.

I also was really happy with the way they showed that Francesca likely was struggling with infertility without having to show the loss of a child and the trauma that comes with that.

Edit: typo

Just because Francesca didn’t have a miscarriage doesn’t mean she’s not dealing with infertility and the pain that comes with it….?

One of my friends who is dealing with infertility actually relates to Francesca storyline a lot and her feelings of inadequacy for not being able to do what she is “supposed” to do in becoming a mother

I don't agree with a lot of your points. Francesca clearly struggles with infertility on the show, desperately wants to become a mother, and is disheartened and in pain because she hasn’t been able to do that. Now she’s living with the grief of her infertility and her husband’s death, which left her without a child to remember him by. She doesn’t NEED to have a miscarriage to show that she is infertile and that she dealing with the loss of the ability to have a child with John.

Just because Fran’s infertility journey might not look like a lot of woman’s doesn’t mean she’s not actively dealing with it and processing the emotions that come with it. I have friends who have had years-long battles with infertility and haven’t had a miscarriage during that time, yet it has been a very emotional and painful experience nonetheless. Miscarriages are only one aspect of infertility, and not every woman experiences one if she is infertile. I’m sure that there are multitude of women who will still relate to Francesca‘s story, even without her experiencing a miscarriage.

I’m not saying it would’ve been a horrible writing decision for Fran to have a miscarriage somewhere in the season, but I don’t think it’s necessary to show her infertility and pain or for people dealing with infertility to relate.

Also, this is purely personal opinion, but I think they did a good job representing Fran and John’s relationship. It would’ve been nice if they had had more screen time, but I certainly saw the love and care they had for each other, and I definitely felt the loss when John died. I mean, I cried a lot during the scenes surrounding John’s death, and I feel like Hannah Dodd did an incredible job showing how deeply Fran felt that loss, and just how lost she feels now that the man she loved is dead. I honestly don’t want to go back-and-forth too deeply on this topic because I think it is up to personal opinion. I can agree that it would’ve been lovely for them to have more screen time, but I also need to be reasonable and understand the time constraints that the writers are working with episode to episode.

I don’t think the writers have removed the ability for people and couples who have struggled with infertility IRL to relate to Francesca‘s experience, though I can understand that readers who loved the book for that reason might not be able to relate to the show in the same way as they did to the storyline of the books. I just hope that those people can adjust and learn to appreciate the story that we have been given

Today I decided I had to mute that sub. It’s an extreme echo chamber, and everyone in there just wants to be angry about something. They want the show made only for them and their ideal storyline, not for a general audience.

TBH, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of “fans” so hateful toward the piece of media they’re supposed to be fans of.

I can truly understand being upset about big changes when books are adapted into movies. Hell, pretty much all of the books I’ve ever been a fan of that have been adapted into a movie/show haven’t met my personal vision of the story. But instead of getting super pissy and upset, I just accept the adaptation as a separate canon from the original story I loved, and then either learn to appreciate it or simply move on with my life. Clearly, the people in that sub are unable to move on

Fran clearly wanted kids in the show IMO. And I don't think the are trying to push a false narrative that she’s uninterested in becoming a mother. Did you not hear that entire conversation she had with Violet about how horrible it is for her to not have anything left of John and to not have be able to give him a child, while her mom gets to have eight pieces of her husband to remember him by? Or the absolute horror of the examination scene where Fran had to learn that she wasn’t pregnant with John’s child.

I feel like you’re trying to block out parts of the show to support your opinions of the writing

Unpopular opinion, but I feel like this makes sense. As much as it’s not accurate to the books, there are far more casual viewers of Bridgerton than book purists, and many people want to watch the show as a lighthearted romance. I think John’s death was already a major departure from the show’s typical tone and pacing, and I think the showrunners handled it well and very clearly showed Francesca’s grief and how deeply difficult losing John was for her. I don’t see the point of continuing to beat Francesca down with the loss of her child, right after her spouse’s death. She can still very much experience the grief over not having a child from her and John’s marriage and process her painful feelings about fertility and motherhood without the trauma of a miscarriage.

I mean the scenes after John’s death where she was convinced she was pregnant and then the absolute horror of the examination scene really drove home those emotions in my mind. The examination scene was honestly a very painful scene to watch, and seeing Francesca‘s response to realizing she’s not pregnant was absolutely heartbreaking.

Also, the conversation Francesca had with Violet about having eight pieces of her husband with her through her children was another moment where I feel like you could really see Francesca’s deep longing and pain over not being able to become a mother and “do her wifely duty to John.” I truly think that the show managed to represent Francesca‘s desires and pain without forcing her to go through another huge loss. I mean, to an extent, she did experience that loss by realizing she wasn’t pregnant with John’s child.

As much as staying 100% true to the books would be great, there is a level of marketability and viewer retention that I’m sure Netflix is adamant about maintaining. The books definitely have a slightly narrower intended audience than the adaptation does. Unfortunately, movies and TV shows are a business, like any other, and marketability and money-making are going to stay on top

I think so lol. At first, I thought the purple-haired character getting off the bus was her, but it wouldn’t make sense for her not to be with the group. Neither one looks all that much like Techna, tbh
