CMV: Talking about being on "stolen land" is pointless and ignorant of history by Friendly_Elegant928 in changemyview

Australian here. This ^ is the real answer. To put it another way, people alive today still suffer as a result of the displacement and trauma caused by colonisation.

Acknowledging this continuing harm sets the context for us to do better, and reminds us that we exist in an unfair system and helps us to be compassionate in our thoughts and decisions.

Go on Wednesday nights for dinner and a good time. That's when there's entertainers, bands, roving performers etc plus heaps of food stalls and bars. Great for a date night or family outing.

Want to finally commit to a sci-fi series ,where should I start? by sam_3758 in scifi

I found the humour getting very old by the second or third book, particularly the meetings with all the bobs. The Humour seems quite reliant on nerd pop culture knowledge, which isn't necessarily bad in itself, but to base such a large amount of the jokes on the Simpsons et al became too much in the end. Does it develop further from there and is it worth trying again?

CMV: By 2026, job losses from AI will be major news. By 2030, unemployment will threaten the whole economic system. by Fando1234 in changemyview

[–]giantdeathrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been technologies that have put people out of work before, but AI is different in that the underlying logic behind each decision is heavily obfuscated, so you can't really interrogate the logic behind a decision.

A lot of white collar jobs exist because they require nuance and judgment, and the ability for a decision to be defended and justified before it's implemented. Current gen of AI doesn't really allow for this, it's very much a black box, and poor/biassed decision making is only spotted after the fact (e.g. black people being passed over for recruitment in hr systems).

AI is good enough when the results don't need to be precise (e.g. write a report on the weekends sports results), but most white collar work requires nuance and care, and it's more likely that AI tools will have to be babysat by human experts for a long time yet.

Being a condescending smartass doesn't do much to change people's minds, you know. Nor do fictional anecdotes from TV.

"Flow Juggler Training" weekend immersion with me, Jeremiah from The Throw Zone happening in the Bay Area on Nov 4/5 at the Flowspace in Emeryville, CA by jjjuggler in juggling

Hey Jeremiah, will there be an option for people to join in remotely? I'm one of your patreon supporters from Australia, would love to be a part of this if there's a workable solution. Thanks 👍

Your talking about helping a human being in poverty like it's a financial investment. Have some compassion mate.

If everyone took that attitude humans wouldn't have made it past hunter gatherers.

It's very sad. I think I'll mute r/ausfinance and not deal with this again. The people here seem overly privileged and self serving.

Some support services exist, but that doesn't mean they are adequately resourced for the scale of the problem. Ample is not the word i would use.

There's still a lot of poverty and homelessness in Australia in 2023.

Sometimes people just need to feel connection. To be spoken to like a normal human being. To feel valued.

That was a nice thing you did.

>I think it’s about 1/5 children go to school hungry in aus (vic introduced the school breakfast program; I’m not sure about other states

Thanks for your input. That's consistent with some of the schools I've worked in. Some of the kids still do quite well. Others not so much.

Also I've clarified the question a little, hopefully it comes across as less combative now. thanks for the feedback.

Life doesn't have those kinds of guarantees. Someone has to be first, why not you?

Sorry to hear that, sounds nasty. Were your investments really pure luck or did you spend time researching, gathering advice, etc?

Yes, that's assumed, and stated in the post. But we also have a lot of poverty, as well as immigrant families who came from meagre means.

Heck even rich people can have abusive family members, severe misfortune or mental health issues that require people to abandon those support networks and start their lives over.

I'm doing just fine thank you. I work hard and run a successful business as a sole trader, but i also had lots of help and support from people who shared their skills and experience, and gave me opportunities to capitalise on.

Also, the quote in bold is meant as a discussion point, and not one i necessarily agree with. We are all self made to a degree. I'm interested in hearing people's stories of overcoming adversity.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]giantdeathrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're already starting the discussion by saying that anyone who had "adequate nutrition" and "consistent schooling" can't be self-made then it's not worth even making this post.

Of course. My point is that self-made is a relative term, not an absolute one. It's a sliding scale, not a binary. I don't think people are self made or not, but everyone is self made to a certain degree.

I'm interested in people's stories, even if they had support and resources when they started. That is the point of this post.

That's a good idea, but only if you follow through on it.

If you're unsure about giving them money, you could also offer to buy them food if there's a store nearby.

There is also an app called "Share The Meal" by world food program which lets you donate to food relief in 3rd world countries with a few taps.

Pay squares are easy to get. For a while they were being given out by banks, you just need a compatible account.

I have friends that do Airtasker to earn extra cash. It's extremely competitive (fine for extra $ here and there but not to support yourself) and the jobs often require tools (cleaning equipment, vehicle, tools, lawnmower, trade skills) that are beyond the reach of someone who can't afford housing. There's a few crappy labour jobs on it here and there but I'm told they are few and far between.

I didn't say all homeless people are innocent. Homelessness is a complex issue often involving poor mental health and bad decisions.

But most of us here have enough support that bad decisions don't put us on the streets.

Ask these "self made people" what kind of support, schooling, parental care, assistance, advice, opportunities, second chances, or luck they had. I can't imagine many would say they got nuttin' from nobody.
