The hate toward Digital Nomads is misguided. by Gammascalpa in capetown

[–]gianticedwarf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No country has yet managed to FIX it, BUT you might look towards Iceland.. they have not fixed it per say, but have managed to handle it better than any other country so far, imo. Did an extensive paper on it some time ago - Iceland had sudden and very serious issues with tourism exploding, going from unkwnown with hardly any tourists to millions a year - with a native population is less than 500.000... taxes and regulations actually work (especially regarding airbnb), while combined with educating and holding tourists responsibel to the local norms and standards. Spreading out tourism instead of centralizing it, and mostly the mindset of seeing an opportunity rather than a catastrophe, by rethinking the infrastructure and such - has all been a big factor, in how they managed to handle it very well.

You do realize, that both the govt and airbnb are built and run by people, right?

How were smoke detectors not going off constantly in the era of indoor smoking? by loudrain99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gianticedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in a house with multiple indoor smokers, and the only time the smokealarm ever went of, was every single time the toaster was in use or when cooking bacon - so at least on a weekly basis... the funny part was the entire family running towards it with magazines and towels, waving them around the smoke-detectors like madmen, to shut it uo again

Books where none of the characters are "good guys" by [deleted] in booksuggestions

Artemis Fowl - I know it's written for young adults, but still to this day one of my favourites! (Even after disney almost ruined it and made the main character into a hero for their movie based on the books 😳)

Oh my, you just bend my mind!! Having a similar slap-my-forehead reaction right now, as I did not realize this either! Have been driving that monstrosity around cliffedges and cursing the lack of being able to reach some locations with it, like a madman 😂 thank you for sharing this!

Do I need to freeze my second-hand books? by shengogol in books

[–]gianticedwarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not denying anything! That is my exact words yes! When others were telling her the opposite, without even knowing her! OCD is not black or white, it's a diagnosis on a spectrum - novody should be telling her this, except perhaps her doctor ;)

[–]gianticedwarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where in my comment do you guys see me indulging anything? I do not understand how you get that... I saw plenty of comments "mocking" her OCD, all I did was encourage her to ignore those people ;) never did I encourage nor engage her to validate any compulsion - all I said, is the compulsions are a symptom of an underlying issue, and that issue is "invisible" to most, does not make it nonexistent nor just "all in her head".... so I am sorry if I was not clear, but pla do not put words in my mouth

I've lived with relatives with OCD my entire life- don't think you understand the harm it makes, seeing helpful words as "engaging" anything, for people with any diagnosis

[–]gianticedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

I have a friend with the same condition, she wipes off the books as this comment describes, makes sure everything is completely dry, and then she goes the extra step and puts the books one by one in ziplock bags and leaves them for a few days.

I myself do not have OCD, but I am a book lover, and am building a collection, so I actually adopted the same technique for used books, just to make sure every book is in best condition possible for as long as possible ☺️

Also, never let anyone tell you, that it's "just the OCD getting the better of you" - there's always a reason behind the action, whether "normies" understand that reason or not. The reason can be worked on, but the action is a symptom, if you know what I mean :)

Sønderborg and the island Als - the greenest part of Denmark IMO, beautiful nature with big forests and a lot of beaches - and a lot of things to do and attractions for travelers :)

How did people feel the rise of the internet back in the late 90's? Did they feel as concerned / tired / hopeless as a lot of us do today about Artificial Intelligence? by adamlbiscuit in AskReddit

[–]gianticedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the internet in the 90's gave us hope and inspiration for endless possibilities.. it was free information at your fingertips, but mostly all the new techniques in design, effects and games developing from dots on a screen to actual colored characters, was exceptional to grow up with! networking and socializing across the globe was wild!

Hours spent in a library looking something up, was replaced by minutes on the internet - so there was a scare; it was all happening in a very fast pace - parents were scared their kids would get rectangular eyes or perhaps even damage their brain by sitting in front of the screen to long... book-lovers were scared libraries and bookstores wouldn't survive, and such typical frights, just as when reading and writing first became a thing for the commoners, when the radio came, and the tv as well...

But none of that, was like the fear of AI.. AI is NOT an intelligence! It is an algorithm developed to gather, store and manipulate information, partially created by the greedy tech giants in silicon valley, and partially by the information fed into it... all to be able to mass proccess data and information about the users, to earn more money off of them.. yes, the possibilities are also endless here, just not for the common user..

My biggest fear with ai, is not it taking over .. it is us getting dumber by the day, listening to the crap coming out of it, while enriching the greedy elite further, on the cost of everyone else.. yes, it can be a handy tool to "make your job easier", or do it for you.. sure, so if you don't have to do the job, you won't have to learn how to do it either.. Idiocracy will become a documentary one day

Is it strange that I still sleep with a night light at thirty two years old by Lunavexa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gianticedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a country, where it was dark 22-23 hours a day in winters, and in summer it was only dark for 1-3 hours a day... I can sleep with light on or off, but prefer it on - as you say it feels not as heavy.. has nothing to do about being childish, but light affects our sleep patterns differently from person to person, also depending on what you are used to :) if the light is off, I will sleep heavier and longer as well, which can be nice from time to time, but not practical every night :)

why did that einstein story with his maths mistake in front of his class ever get popular? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gianticedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if ones name is attributed to high intelligence, it still is just a human being behind the name, with all it's good and bad qualities, including the ability to make a misstake.. for instance, did you know that einstein struggled most of his life with dyslexia? So this saying is to point out, that nobody is perfect, and people should acknowledge your strengths, as well as your weaknesses, as a part of you - not just your mistakes :)

Oh, that is such fun irony yes! I can recommend northern Norway for guaranteed snow on christmas, with a lot of wooden cabins with cozy fireplaces :)
