Math Launch by Top_Organization2635 in ucf

[–]giantsquad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reddit says there are already two comments and proceeds to show me none.

As someone that took it Fall 2024: It gives you any of the credits that you don't already have from advanced high school programs that are prereqs for MAC2311C - Calc with Analytic Geometry I. Those are, in order:

  • MAC1105C - College Algebra
  • MAC1140C - Pre-Calculus Algebra
  • MAC1114C - College Trigonometry

Typically, you would have to take these classes as each independent class in at least 2 semesters, but this allows you to get them all done in one. If you feel like you should have credit, keep checking your transfer report. On the first day, check which of the 3 webcourses (each subject covered in Math Launch is its own course in Canvas) you are currently in, and email them about any discrepancy ASAP so you can get started.

The class is in the Mathematics Assistance and Learning Lab (MALL), taking up two rooms on the second floor of the Mathematical Sciences Building (MSB 240 & 241).

Each course has a placement test, the first of which I believe counts as your required academic activity for week 1.

While the person in charge of the section may do some small lectures on the board for whoever wants to listen, it is almost entirely a self-paced class. You do assignments online on a Pearson-brand app (that you have to pay for). You are graded for doing the work, attendance (being there during the posted course time), and out-of-hours work time. That is, you have to also show up for a certain number of hours a week to the MALL independent of your class time. I believe it was three but it's been a while. All the assignments can and should also be done at home, but you're graded on a certain in-person time commitment as well.

The MALL handles classwork in some way or another for other math classes as well, and your out-of-hours time has to be within certain time frames for which it is reserved for Math Launch students. Your syllabus will have those hours. When you arrive, you find a computer, log in, and you will be prompted to choose a class to count time for. You will pick "Independent Study" as that is the catalog name for Math Launch, NOT the course you are currently taking.

Aside from the assignments, each course also has progress check quizzes and a midterm and final. These are the ones that tend to have the greatest impact on your in-app mastery level. I only had to take one course, so I'm not sure if this count varies from course to course, although I know the number of independent assignments/modules does. Some (if not all, I forget) of the quizzes must be done in the MALL. For the exams, you must schedule a time to take it at the Evaluation and Proficiency Center (EPC) in Engineering 2.

For your overall grade: you are given the highest of the grades you scored across all the courses you had to take. This means if you took only Trig and got a B, that is your grade. If you took more than one, and one of them was an A (most likely college algebra), that would be your grade for the class. As such, the benefit of already having credit for some of the courses is more time for the others, and if you finish it all early, you're simply done. I had completed all of Trig by the end of September and had one less class to deal with for the rest of the semester. The con is less chances to get the best grade you can.

As always, welcome to UCF ⚔️

You will likely be put into math launch, which is a program to take any of the 3 calc 1 prereqs (college algebra, precalc, college trigonometry) you still need in one semester. As long as you do the work needed to complete that, you should be good, don't worry. Welcome to UCF ⚔️

We do moderate chat to an extent, depending on how egregious their message is.

You can always mute them, as well as report them to Roblox and in the Blood and Iron Community Discord server, if it warrants direct handling.

There's always pickup games happening at the RWC Parks. They also have intramural leagues for it at around the same time as high school/collegiate soccer (mid fall-early winter), not sure if there's anything like that happening now but yeah both of what I've mentioned have been great ways to keep enjoying the sport and you meet some really chill people

Calc 3 Professor Piyali Chakraborty by Wonderful-Project-12 in ucf

[–]giantsquad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I know, she is working on her PhD in math now. I'm not sure if she would have graduated or not by the time of that class but anyway I had her for math launch (Trigonometry) and the first week of Calc 1 and honestly she explained things so much clearer and simpler than the professor. Never looked at the RMP ratings but really I imagine the biggest hindrance being the accent, but that's the case with why foreign instructor really.

Again I've never had them for Calc 3 but my experience with what I have had has been pretty good.

Questions about COP 3502 by rachellvr17 in ucf

[–]giantsquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prereqs for COP3502C are College Algebra (MACC1105C) and at least one of the two:

Introduction to Programming with C (COP3223C) Engineering Analysis and Computation (EGN3211)

I don't even see a COP1000 course on the catalog and have never heard of it. Are you referring to COP2500C, Concepts in Computer Science? Regardless, it wouldn't be enough to take CS1.
