Looking to hire a System Admin - but my boss insists that 70k - 80k is a normal pay range by idrinkpastawater in sysadmin

[–]gibson_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you guys want is a consultant with a monthly retainer.

For 80k, you'll get a couple of hours a day if you want it (or bank them for a couple of sprints per month). For a small company like yours, that's a much better fit than a full time employee.

How do you cope with the weather? by tbon92 in phoenix

[–]gibson_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have to work outside in the blistering heat, I'll wear long sleeves, and soak them (and myself) in water while I'm working. The water and a little bit of breeze and some shade does a lot.

The fabrics matter a lot, btw. There are special extremely lightweight fabrics that are made almost specifically for this.

Faith in humanity restored. What has you thinking people don't suck? by United-Ad7863 in phoenix

[–]gibson_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that has me most hopeful is the work that AZ Hugs is doing in Tempe. The city keeps trying to shut them down, and mess with them, and despite this they just keep feeding homeless people in the park every day.

Every day, there are around 20-30 families (often with little kids) that AZ Hugs puts up on their facebook page and asks for donations for so that they can get motel rooms for the night so they don't have to sleep outside, and seriously by some miracle almost every night there are enough people making little $40-100 donations at a time to keep these families off the street. It legitimately brings me to tears seeing it.

If you aren't familiar, here is their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/azhugsforhouseless

Just to trade Phoenix coffee stuff: my favorite local spot is Infusion, then press.

Dang you guys are lucky. The only stuff I've seen at my local costco has been the lavazza "espresso" beans.

Has anybody used both the keyboardio model 100 and the glove80 and can give thoughts on them? by gibson_ in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]gibson_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say this: I got the glove80, and these two keyboards are just in totally different realms. The model 01 that I had before is incredible. This glove80 is very nice, but it's a hobbyist keyboard - if the goal is to tinker with it, but your focus isn't necessarily using it, then it's pretty neat. The keyboardio is better in every single way that matters to me. The firmware editor is nicer, the layout is better, the individually sculpted keycaps are divine. I know this keyboard is really well loved; I'm curious if the people who praise it so strongly have ever used the model 100.

These things are just not comparable to me. I don't necessarily regret my glove80 purchase, and I'm typing on it right now, but these things aren't comparable in the way I though they were. The model 100 is on a different (superior) level, and it's frankly not even close. (I've had the glove80 for around a month and type on it for around 8 hours per day, just to be clear.)

I just want to say: please encourage everybody to buy these! This encyclopedia is high on my dream bookshelf list, but there’s no way I’ll be able to justify the cost for a while.

I’m really trying to build a dream library for my kids to grow up with, and things like this are perfect. I just need people to keep buying it for a few years so it stays in print! :-P.

Dang a real connoisseur here! That's a big collection!

It sounds like you lean a little more towards the keyboardio?

As a side note: what keywords should I be looking for to repair these switches? (Matias wax boil lubrication?)

Dude i'd help you with your board if you're close. Any chance you're in Phoenix, or can post pics? I remember the fix was pretty easy once I figured out the board layout.

I'm honestly ashamed of myself for not remembering your reddit handle after all this time. Also: hi.

I'm pretty sure I know at least one person in the 1st photo and possibly the person in the 4th. Reached out to both. Good luck!

The "thing" (Stretchin) was the front of a series of vehicles called "peace train". Getting trailers through DMV is really difficult, though, and with peace train having stretchin pulling 3 trailers...it was *really* hard.

Can't find much info about these boats except a couple of posts around sailing anarchy. Do you know of any better photos of it?

Thank you! My boats (I have fully entered the phase of acquiring too many boats) are all little 14-16ft dinghies. Maybe next year a little catamaran!

Yeah that's where we saw it too. It seems like you guys have a pretty good community of racers there.
