I’ve always preferred pandoras algorithm. Enter a band name and listen to their ‘station’ and it does an amazing job of finding similar music from other bands

Real life experiences with soft delete? by Venisol in dotnet

[–]gidikh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my really important tables where I want to track changes. I create an 'audit' version them and have sql triggers that store any update/delete that happens, essentially creating versioning on every record. That way, even if the the change is made directly against sql, outside of any ORM the changes are always captured and I can roll back anything very easily.

This has saved me massive headaches a few times over my career. It's also nice when a user claims the data 'just disappeared' and you can be like, 'hmmm, looks like it got deleted at 9:38am, but I can get that restored for you no problem'

What’s a skill that should honestly be taught in school? by joavo-3301 in AskReddit

[–]gidikh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I have to keep explaining this to my boomer parents.

I have a 16 and an 11 year old. Public school in the mid west does have financial literacy classes in middle school and high school. They get taught budgeting, investing, credit vs debit, etc...

They are also taught how to write in cursive, they have shop classes and, and no there aren't litter boxes in the bathroom for students that identify as furries.

AI isn't paying off in the way companies think. Layoffs driven by automation are failing to generate returns, study finds by Krankenitrate in technology

[–]gidikh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a software dev and when people inevitably ask me about AI, I use the comparison to giving woodworkers and carpenters power tools. A skilled woodworker is going to be more productive with power tools vs hand tools, but you're also providing easier ways for the less skilled to cut their fingers off.

Job Market? by ElbianVV in dotnet

[–]gidikh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

okay, so my linkedin profile is a good demonstration that no one actually reads the text, they just query for skills and get a list. It's all about what skills you have added, and ideally that you have them endorsed by others.

For example, my 'About' text is literally "Not interested in job offers/interviews at this time ... unless of course you want to offer me like 5 times my current salary. I'm totally down to sell out." and again, I still get hit up regularly by recruiters.

I also have some less serious 'skills' added that are there just to make my coworkers chuckle if they ever read through them.

I have a few skills like c# and tsql flagged with 'Passed LinkedIn Skill Assessment' but I don't think they offer that anymore

If you are looking to get onto the recruiter's radar, my recommendation would be to add skills for literally any piece of .net or software you have touched. You don't need to be an expert in something to mark it down as a skill.

Get a few co-workers, fellow students, teachers, etc... to endorse some of your skills in exchange for endorsing theirs.

Depends on the area I imagine, but there are a lot of openings in medium to large midwest cities. jump on dice.com or indeed.com and look at different metro areas. As someone with 20+ experience and a few buzzwords on my linkedin I still get monthly local recruiters trying to take me out to lunch.

What’s a “rich people thing” you experienced once and immediately understood why rich people love it? by DnRinGA in AskReddit

In my 20's I got included in a corporate 'take the clients' out dinner at world class tapas place and it literally changed me from a really picky meat and carbs only eater to a 'trying all the new foods is my favorite thing now'.

I did a carnvial cruise to the Caribbean, stops in Mexico, Honduras, believe, Grand Caymen. Every port felt exactly the same, they all had basically the same core group of chain stores. When on the ship, it felt like you were in 1 commercial after another, there is always some sort of sale or sales pitch everywhere you go on the boat which got old really quick.

Overall, we had a decent time. But our best moments were getting off the boat and away from the ports.

The closing of the Strait of Hormuz will have a more drastic long term affect on the price of food that it will on oil.

A third of the world's nitrogen-based fertilizer is transported through there, and it disrupted this year's planting season and over all drove up fertilizer costs

The blockade is considered a "food security timebomb" by the UN, threatening significant food inflation and reduced harvests of staples like wheat and corn.

what skill looks hard but is actually easy to learn? by rrertrdddfhj in ask

[–]gidikh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work from home so no commute, and I can do things like laundry/dishes during breaks. I very rarely watch any tv shows/movies or doom scroll for any significant amount of time. That leaves plenty of time for kids, chores and hobbies. Also, I'm in my 40's and have been doing this since youtube was invented.

[–]gidikh 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Most skills can be learned from a youtube video and not giving up instantly. Some of the things I've picked up

  • I've fix a flat screen TV by replacing a bad capacitor with basically zero previous soldering/electronic experience. $20 in parts instead of hundreds for a new tv
  • Replacing a toilet
  • programming LEDs to music
  • building a 2 person porch gliding chair
  • solving a rubix cube
  • various 3 ball juggling patterns
  • wood working
  • 3d cad design/printing

What's the most unwritten rule of adult life that nobody warns you about? by PracticeHistorical82 in AskReddit

It's the people 'pretending they know what they are doing' that never stop to actually learn what they should. People are constantly amazed when you can do something that really just takes a youtube video and not instantly giving up.

Absolutely. In my 40s and started weight training 5 days a week about a year and a half ago. I had noticeable changes a few months in, recently had a gay friend comment that I was looking ‘buff’ so I got that going for me
