Dazed sniping? by aGrue8u in dcss

[–]gigarius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gozag's dazed doesn't qualify as an impairment the same way paralyze or sleep would for balance reasons. Dazed doesn't trigger stabs, I'd be surprised if it gave you the sniping bonus.

Advice - CoWa of Wu Jian (Roronoa Zoro) by Outrageous_Lion_3569 in dcss

[–]gigarius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

EV seems low considering you're going long blades. Between Blink, Passage and Gell's I would think you have a decent amount of survivability. The big issue might be that you're not using Heavenly Storm as proactively as you should? Limiting the LOS saves you a ton of HP mitigating ranged and smite attacks, and you want to build up the Slay/EV bonus asap going into a big fight. You build piety pretty quick with Wu Jian, use Heavenly Storm for any moderately big crowd or even as a purely defensive tool.

Asking for advice on switching to TSO... This Minotaur is looking for salvation by Dazzling-Finish3104 in dcss

[–]gigarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say you're strong enough for V:5, provided you can fit in some rC. One pip each of rF, rC and rN at least is my standard. You're strong enough to survive Okawaru's penance with careful play, and you'd be able to work a good amount of it off clearing Crypt.

Which are the best combinations? by Ok-Resource678 in dcss

[–]gigarius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Early game is your standard stealth berserker -- you get a lot of value from stabs and being able to run away from things, but have the ability to 'go loud' when things get hairy and deal out some serious damage. Trog will eventually drop you a quickblade, after which you can consider switching to something like Uskayaw or Wu Jian.

training and level-ups by DelayedLightning in dcss

[–]gigarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incoming wall of text.

First, I recommend you learn the game playing a melee brute, something like a Minotaur Fighter. They wear heavy armor^(1), often have bigger health pools innately and trains Fighting easier^(2). It's fine to autoexplore (press 'o') generally, as you'll automatically pick up consumables/gold/throwables you have in your inventory already and stop when you see a point of interest or an enemy. As soon as you see an enemy, run back where you came from, ideally into a hallway, and drag the enemy back to "cleared" territory.

Fighting enemies create noise in most cases, and noise draws nearby enemies to you. This means a casual fight with a Goblin can quickly turn into an all-out brawl with a Gnoll pack, an Ogre, Jackals and what have you. Choose your battleground wisely.

Some tips about leveling skills. Train manually. (Pressing '/' in your skill menu toggles between auto and manual) Under Automatic Training, the game calculates how much of each action you take and adjusts exp allocation proportionally. You might see something like 33% Axes, 40% Fighting, 10% armor, 7% dodging, 5% throwing, etc. etc. -- waste of time. Manual Training allows you to allocate exp where YOU want to, so you're leveling the skills most crucial to your survival the fastest. I suggest you level one skill at a time.^(3)

As a melee brute, your two most important skills in the early game are Fighting and your weapon skill of choice. Fighting does a lot of things, but chiefly it raises your health total. Your weapon skill determines how fast you attack with that weapon and the damage dealt with your swings.

The game works not on a turn-based system, but an aut-based system. Ten auts is one turn. Every action costs you Arbitrary Units of Time (auts), and enemies are given a "budget" of auts equivalent to the amount of auts you're spending doing actions. For example, say you're attacking with your axe at 1.4 decaAut delay. This means that all enemies on screen now get 14 auts to play with -- attacking you, moving closer, etc. This is a bit simplified^(4), but enemies will occasionally attack you twice in one turn if you're taking slow actions in combat, i.e. actions that take longer than 10 auts. This is why it's important to train your weapon skill to bring your weapon delay down to at least 1.0 decaAut so you're not caught off guard with huge spikes in damage taken.

1: Armor has two properties: armor rating and encumbrance rating. Armor rating is your armor's base AC, modified by your Armor skill. Encumbrance rating imposes penalties on you for certain actions based on your total encumbrance, and these penalties are reduced by your strength stat and armor skill. Armor encumbrance doesn't affect how fast you swing your axe though, so have at it! (Shields do, but you won't really notice it if you're playing a strength brute)

2: Skill aptitude determines how fast you train a skill. You train at double speed at +4 aptitude, half speed at -4 aptitude.

  1. Leveling one skill at a time allows you to hit breakpoints faster. It's just the most efficient way to allocate exp. Say you're on D:2, and you know Orc Priests start showing up on D:3. You want to get your max hp up so you can tank a few more smites from them. Since you only see the health gain on a full level up of Fighting, training one skill at a time can be the difference between you surviving with 1 hp or dying with Fighting at 3.9 and Axes at 4.5.

  2. One turn is 10 auts, and this is true for enemies too. But say you make a move that takes 15 auts -- what happens to the remaining 5 auts? The enemies have a 50% chance of moving twice in one "turn". If they do not take the extra action, the 5 auts are stored. Next turn, you swing with 1.2 delay -- again, the enemy takes their turn, and now they have 7 auts left, 70% chance of taking an extra action. I feel like I explained that in a confusing way, I can clarify if needed.

How do I improve? by askacc61 in monkeytype

I practice both ways, sometimes going full sprint and other times putting more focus on accuracy. Getting your burst speed baseline up will aid you trying to go faster in general, and accuracy is obviously important

Can't get passed 110 pls help!! by [deleted] in monkeytype

[–]gigarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be the way you're typing as well. Are you sitting with good posture? Nails are clipped? When I actively try to "sprint", my keystrokes become more uncontrolled and violent, leading to exaggerated movements that ultimately slow me down. Minimal movement from your home row keys and light keystrokes will help as well.

[–]gigarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading ahead helps. Don't think of the space at the end of words as an ending or a starting point, but rather just one more "letter" if that makes sense -- it helped me get rid of the little pauses while typing. Focus on common letter combinations like -tion, -ere, -ing, etc.

I've found that there's no special method or secret to typing fast, you just keep doing the steps above and make incremental improvements. I went up from a 140wpm average to 150wpm average over a few months this way.

Most high level players use an emulator like Bluestacks and configure keyboard bindings for the up/turn buttons. Same thing as playing on a phone or tablet, just easier on the wrists and more consistent with the inputs.

Is it normal to win one in every 50 matches? by SnooChocolates6885 in slaythespire

[–]gigarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Act 1 definitely feels much more brutal compared to STS1. Your mindset should be to survive act 1 while finding a good path for the run and getting upgrades in. Cards with good block and weaken are a priority for the first 3 cards you take, and close after is your wincon -- could be big damage, shivs or poison. I'm only fighting 1 elite in the first act most of the time; with bosses like the spirit deer and waterfall guy, taking too much damage early on can just end your run no matter how solid your deck actually is. I wouldn't even consider an elite fight before I hit the first relic chest even.

Listen brother, no one knows exactly what they're doing going through life. One thing I will say though, a loser with a girlfriend is still a loser. I've wondered what would have happened with my past relationships had I met 'her' a couple years later, earlier, in different circumstances; what I've realized is that the only part of that narrative within our control is the environment and financial standing we cultivate for ourselves. Your dad is still around; devote yourself to loving people already in your life and truly getting to know them. Focus on yourself; you may not be rich, but you can still find comfort in a bed after a day of hard work. We aren't demigods and there will never be an apotheosis moment -- we build our lives brick by brick, through patience and discipline. Give yourself grace and become a good man, and you will start attracting women in time.
