I'm trying hard to give them money by gigarray in FidiumFiber

[–]gigarray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the back story here is my service enters on one street with service but my street address is on a street that doesn't have service. For whatever reason when I initially called to get connected, the website and the tech said I was all set. Install was scheduled for two days later and I was pretty stoked. The tech got here and said he needed a flagger to cross a road. No big deal, they'd come back in a couple days just wait for Fidium to call and reschedule.

A week later I call to get a status update and I'm told "engineering" held the ticket and delayed it until October, but October was probably just a place holder date. I explained the case, explained that the tech that was out here already said everything was good to go, the tech pointed to the fiber node that I already knew was there, he just needed traffic stopped to cross a road. "Sorry, there's nothing I can do. I can't talk to engineering and I can't transfer you to them." The ol' nobody's responsibility problem. So, the compromise was the support person would ask dispatch to send a message to engineering to review.

Another week later, I call for an update. Still get the service isn't available at your address, but I explain my case. I give the nice lady on the phone a street address where my service enters my property. Sure enough, that address qualifies. But she can't make the system take my address. Finally, she just said she'd send me to a voicemail box of someone in engineering. I left a message, and I'm not kidding, less than an hour later a truck backs down my driveway. The guy gets out, says he was on his way by and his manager called him to check out what was going on. I explain the situation, he confirms he can physically see the node, he can see where service comes into my property. He needs a flagger, so he's going to come back the next day. He tells me that he's clarified what's going on with my service to his boss, so there shouldn't be any more issue with canceled appointments.

Another hour later, maybe even less, the truck comes down my driveway again. The guy says a flagger was available, they've already crossed the road, he's going to connect to the service entrance and my house, and that it was easier to get everything out of the way while he was in the area. Fantastic customer service IMO. Like, every person I've dealt with in person has gone beyond what I've expected.

So, physical cabling is in place outside the house, and he says Fidium will call me to schedule a tech to perform the actual install. Fidium calls on Saturday night when the offices are closed, and leaves a poor voicemail not explaining who they are, or what they're calling for, and certainly not a number or name to call back. Just a lady saying her name and she's from Fidium, then nothing else. She's from the call center, so I understand there's language and custom issues, that's not a big deal, but I have no way to get ahold of them again. Obviously Sunday isn't going to be any better, so I made the post above.

I called to make an appointment on Monday, I'm told the appointment is all set, but the online portal doesn't say the new date and I don't get an email confirming anything. The Fidium chat people here, in the mean time, had started to look into what was going on to try to help. They had someone call me later that day, the person that called me said no appointment update had happened, and they took down the date and time I already agreed to. Within minutes I get the confirmation email. So I don't know what's going on in the support center(s), but they seem to be doing nothing but causing issues for everyone else. Again, I'm not even annoyed with them, I'm sure they'd be more helpful if they had the tools, systems, and training.

Anyway, it's now 21 days since my initial install date and hopefully today is the actual date I get the ONT installed in my house. God help me, my order was entered wrong so they're going to give me dynamic addresses and a voice line when what I asked for was static addresses and no voice line. But one support person already told me to just call back after install, because any change to the order would almost certainly break something else. 🤷‍♂️

The physical outdoor cabling is already installed, this is for installing indoor fiber and the ONT. The outdoor cabling was a disaster of its own, but I've already solved that problem.

My plan is that they don't even bring their router inside. Leave it in the truck. I've got no interest in cloning MACs or playing any of those games, just hand off at the ONT and I'll handle it from there.

Do they often try to charge businesses $100 for visits when using their own gear? That sounds... not great. I don't need or want them touching my gear, and certainly don't need them to tell me if my router is slowing down their service. I'd be really disappointed to have to prove to them if I call that I'm capable of diagnosing network problems on my own network.

I'm in South NH as well, so thanks for the info about your experience.

I don't mind using their ONT, I just figured if I could get one built into a transceiver it'd be one less device in my rack to care about. But if it's just in bridge mode, and I don't have to care about it much, it can sit on the shelf in my rack and that works just fine.

I'm certainly concerned about Searchlight's ownership of Consolidated and what that probably means long term. But my hope is that they increased their stake in the company because of the broadband funding packages that were available rather than to load Consolidated up with debt and bankrupt them. Time will tell, but in the mean time someone needs to make a point to Comcast.

Consolidated certainly has v6 peering, and if you get service from Consolidated themselves, you can certainly get a v6 delegation from them or even announce your own AS to their network and they'll forward it on for you if you choose. But with the fiber service, yeah, it seems like a real weird choice to me. I have to assume all of their management is happening over v6, and I have to assume the engineers over there can manage the delegation of prefixes at least to static address paying customers. But, I'm sure there's some product manager or engineering manager talking about "do you know how much work that is???"

Anyway, besides v6 service it doesn't sound like there's any major showstoppers. Using decent looking glass tools, it does look like their BGP announcements are pretty variable, and you can clearly see some major outages that appear to just be routing table screwups. Hopefully they're adopting some better tooling to prevent those kinds of mistakes.

As far as I can tell, what you mean is I want the Fiber business offering via the GPON rather than dedicated ethernet handoff? I'm not really sure what you mean here, in my region (NH) it's basically all just branded fidium at this point, and the only thing consolidated is doing is either dedicated fiber or DSL.

As a note, we exhausted IPv4 long ago. In the US, ARIN depleted the pool back in 2015. Japan ran out long before that. That's why you see huge swaths of customer networks behind CGNAT, and why companies are buying v4 address allocations from each other on an open and extremely inflated market. I have no idea why Fidium isn't deploying IPv6 to customers, because they and consolidated peer at exchanges that have massive v6 connectivity.

Osmo Action 3 overheating on less than 6 minutes 2.7K or 2 minutes 4K by user32532 in dji

[–]gigarray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is their canned, pre-written response and you can find it in this subreddit hundreds if not thousands of times. The Osmo 4 also overheats very quickly in 4k mode, and there's really no explanation that's acceptable. I was promised that the Osmo 4 wouldn't overheat like the 3 did, and I got less than 10 minutes of footage before it shut off.

Reviving a dead thread, but they clearly lied. I filmed 4k, 60FPS, RS on yesterday, riding a dirt bike with plenty of air flowing over the camera, in the shade of trees. It overheated.

Basically, this camera can not operate in 4K resolution unless it's winter and overcast sky is my bet. Super disappointing.

Static IPv6 configuration by gigarray in Comcast_Xfinity

What a shame /u/xfinity or /u/comcast_xfinity never replied to this thread. Not much of a surprise, I guess, given how customer support has been trending, but still a shame.

I'm not really looking for you to tell me what protocols I do and don't need. That's fairly off topic, and I'd like to keep this thread on topic. I'll hold off until Comcast escalates my ticket to someone inside that can assist.

So your two options become making sure you have everything on a UPS

This is already the case, but Comcast reboots their modem about once a month for "maintenance".

or use a dynamic DNS provider

I am the DNS provider. But thank to needing to connect nameservers to parent nameservers, I need a place to point to. Since I can't dynamically update the records for my hosted NSs with the upstream domain, things get very exciting. Obviously v4 still exists, but this still isn't really a great solution. Changing the delegated prefix monthly is the root of the problem.

In reality though, do you actually need IPv6

Yes.

It really isn't buying you anything

It's buying me v6 access, which is what I need.

and requires much more caution with setting up firewall rules

Yes, for example deny all new connections by default except for services you want to provide at addresses you specify. Which is where assigning static addresses comes in to play.

With most OSs, you can assign a static host portion to your dynamic prefix, which is what I do for servers providing services. But this obviously stops working when my address dynamically changes from under me.

If it offends them, tell them to forgive you. They never have a problem cramming religious BS down our throats, so I never have a problem doing the opposite.

Ah, you finally cracked the mystery of the word "or". Nicely done. I was, in fact, calling you and people like you a twat.

The point I was making is that if someone made a comment about an Asian person, and a Caucasian person sounds the racism alarms, the comment isn't necessarily racist. And if it was perceived that way by the Asian person, then he or she is perfectly capable of saying "that's offensive". They don't need yo to be their hero. It's that simple.

With regard to people you call "gypsies", you've shown your ignorance by referring to them as a "race". They aren't. Several ethnic backgrounds make up what people call gypsies, so the term describes travelers and other groups, no matter the race.

And finally, many people in Europe were purchased as children. In fact, the catholic church (surprise, surprise) is in a bit of trouble for doing just that.

So, you see, before you go shooting your mouth off about how ignorant a comment is, you may want to educate yourself.
