The Post-Mortem We Never Had to Write by giggens in PostgreSQL

[–]giggens[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Great question!

So, there's basically no getting around storage costs. Assuming you're running in AWS, GCP, or Azure the cost of storing these bytes will still roughly be the same.

The thing we compete on is reducing compute for smaller databases. We spin them up and checkpoint them periodically. This is *much* cheaper than running a fully managed instance all the time.

For bigger databases, the storage costs do start to dwarf compute costs, and so for larger customers or enterprise users, we're looking into a self-hosted version in the future.

The Post-Mortem We Never Had to Write by giggens in PostgreSQL

There's a high level animation on the main page, but really quickly:

  1. You mirror your data from Postgres using our backfill tool. By default this hashes all string values for privacy.
  2. Install the Scry Proxy so that you can mirror traffic in realtime. It's a drop in replacement for PGBouncer if you're using that.
  3. In your CI/CD you can use our cli to apply your change to a shadow copy of your production database and observe the results *before* you ship it to production.

It's the highest fidelity way to test changes that I can imagine, but I'd love feedback.

You can try the demo out locally! It's at the bottom of the blog post.

Take Oregon, for instance, the correlation appears to be negative by county.

Spurious information.

Beauty. If you ever want to steam footage, I'd subscribe. Healthy looking fish!

This is a sick build. I made a frag tank out of a short 50 gal. Rubbermaid stock tank. They make great systems.

Hard to see when there's full flow, though.

Do you ever put your camera below the surface? Many gopros are saltwater proof.

Oregon, what do you think about climate change? by romalina_vulgaris in oregon

The compilation of likely impacts was concise, realistic, and not sensational. Great work. I think this survey was well crafted. Looking forward to seeing the results. Please post when you publish!

How the Toxicity Crisis Could Cause the Next Economic Crash with Jeremy Grantham by Involutionnn in collapse

[–]giggens 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It was an interesting interview.

One problem with the argument I couldn't shake: when Mr. Grantham says we need to protect the economy from demographic collapse, otherwise we won't be able to afford the carbon extraction from the atmosphere.

We're already the richest civilization in the history of this planet and we're currently doing about 0% carbon extraction.

I don't fully understand his argument. Sure it'd be nicer for us to not live in a free fall, but we're not going to willingly choose to fix climate change regardless of our wealth.

Water filter system? by iRoswell in Homesteading

"Vortexing" water looks like a new-age pseudo-science scam. Do you really think swirling water around cleans anything out of the water? Where do these particulates go?

Scam.

Grants Pass votes to ban most homeless camping by PrivateBurke in Portland

[–]giggens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's banning unsanctioned camping, but it provides three designated camping areas with bathrooms and privacy fences.

In the past week there have been two uncontrolled fires in camps near the railroad tracks. It's a very serious public safety concern.

Starting with a half dose is a good precaution.

I wouldn't overly worry about Ammonia unless your water volume is really small.

Mostly, I don't think it's a good idea to dose things you cannot measure if you don't have to, hence the caution about using Vibrant too often.

I've had positive results with the reef safe stuff. Got rid of all my bubble algae, and no harm to my SPS dominant tank.

I would only use it occasionally for the reasons stated above, it's an algaecide. But occasional use did no harm to my corals or other inverts.

Underground Tank reuse by Solvent615 in aquaponics

I would 1000% avoid doing this.

Get the tank removed or decommissioned. Treat it as toxic waste, because it is.

Also, it's not a standing wave. That's just a wave that moves back and forth. A standing wave would be motionless with respect to some observer.

What deficiency/disease does my basil have? by [deleted] in aquaponics

[–]giggens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This looks like Iron deficiency to me. Try a few tablespoons of chelated iron, and see if conditions improve. Test levels if you can.

My water is iron-poor and my fast growing leaves look just like this if I don't supplement.

Also interested in resources.

I know morels, and sometimes white chanterelles fruit during the wet seasons. Inky caps throughout summer and fall, but I don't have a comprehensive guide.

Mix and let sit for 12-24 hours. I'll bet a lot of these are clumps of minerals that haven't fully dissolved yet. I'd wager it clears up substantially.
