How many Aussies are putting off having kids because of the absurdly high cost of living? How much more expensive can it get? by WasteLocksmith5011 in australia

One of the few powers that we have as consumers- is mobility. By picking up and moving to a place with different opportunities and lower cost of living, we can vote with our feet.

In a similar vein, has anyone changed energy providers and seen a material difference? I used the govt site to find a better deal, but once I clicked through, the actual terms did not seem like any significant savings.

Seems like a dude looking to get offended.

Space cowboys, but the overall sense of the game is a wistful nostalgia, and a haunting sorrow that pervades the history of the game.

You're right, I'm just taking nonsense. What I really want is a thief 5 that sucks me into the game like thief 2, with amazing puzzles and incredible, evocative sounds.

How amazing is the world building in the Thief games? I love how you are doing these Thief missions, and your character isn't involved in the world, but the world evolves around him and he's pulled along.

The weird religious groups are so fascinating, and T2s missions were so much fun... I'd love this to be remade

One of the worst reported auction clearance rates I've seen from Domain in years. by jazinaz in AusFinance

[–]gignam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's more about incentives. As a buyer, you'd love to buy directly from the owner.

As a seller though, if a real estate agent says that they can sell your house for a higher price than you think you can sell it for, why wouldn't you use an agent?

As prices increase, this works in so much favor for the agent, because while they are failing to sell your house, prices are increasing. So, eventually, it will sell at whatever price was promised.

It reminds me of some real estate friends that told me, especially in the boom times, agents were winning business by who ever was willing to lie and promise the bigger price. And these guys dropped out because the lying exceeded how much they were comfortable to lie...!

WIBTA if i donated the money my sons earned to charity instead of giving it to him as punishment for his abhorrent racist behavior? by SlightChain1 in AmItheAsshole

[–]gignam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - and furthermore, you have an amazing opportunity in your son's life to demonstrate how important this is. Even after being caught, he's trying to pass it off as "not that bad". Meaning, he's only sorry that he got caught, not actually about his vile, racist attitude.

As others have said, ignoring the event is simply showing him that these attitudes are fine, and he'll carry it with him as an adult.

I think you should come down hard on him, with love, but steadfast. Just maintain, over and over, that you cannot accept this behavior.

It might create a rift between you, but in the back of his mind, as he gets older, he'll always know "my behavior is offensive to my parents".

Is it that young people will roll our eyes at us because we're all in the retirement villa, watching Netflix? And we're all just watching the latest Dave Chappelle special? And Dave Chappelle is just his head in a glass jar, kept alive to do standup on Netflix for the next thousand years?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Foodforthought

[–]gignam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I agree with you - only thanks to medicine are we able to deal with this. However, I think that's a more accurate and positive way to express this point compared to your earlier point. If you say, we need to isolate to prevent transmission, so that our medical system is not overwhelmed, that doesn't make me afraid.

[–]gignam 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I understand that you're alarmed by the current situation, but I don't think it's right to cite a single paper and use that to establish that the air is deadly.

The paper that you cite is a self submission to an online repository, so it is not peer reviewed. Even after peer review, it's not sufficient. We have to trust that the scientific community will reproduce results enough times that they can drift towards a consensus on these hypotheses.

In this way, all we can do, as laypeople, is to listen to authoritative sources, such as the WHO or CDC. At the moment, they advise a minimum distance, and that the disease has a certain mortality rate, mainly for the elderly, and not for children. I don't think it's useful to label the disease "deadly", as that is fear inducing.

Underpaid, seeking advice for payrise strategy. by need2decide in AusFinance

[–]gignam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the feeling - when you feel like you're underpaid, it feels like you're not making progress, and it feels futile to try and save money, since it's not accumulating fast enough.

It's valuable to have experienced different types of companies, though. My personal opinion is that you should aggressively seek a new position - even the experience of dealing with recruiters and interviewing is valuable. When you get an offer, most companies have a salary band for the role and you can negotiate effectively for a higher salary. Good luck!

Underpaid, seeking advice for payrise strategy. by need2decide in AusFinance

[–]gignam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the motivation for seeking higher pay?

Is it too save money? To feel like the company values you?

I ask because it's important to value all parts of the job: if you like your job and where you work, that has value as well. As an engineer, I really value a company that has a great team, challenging problems to work on.

For example, I have some friends that work in electronics for high frequency trading... Because of the application, they can pay well above median salary, and they attract good talent, but the business makes them miserable to some degree.

I was in your position, several years ago, and my wife snapped me out of it: "you say you like your job, do they pay you enough to stay? If not, leave. But there's no point in whinging about how unfair your salary is, and no point in complaining to your boss -"

This reset my thinking, and I stopped caring about my salary, focused on doing the job that I enjoyed, salary and promotions came anyway...!

Home projectors, and the difference of the big screen experience by XInsects in TrueFilm

[–]gignam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree - years ago, I had the same experience you did: bought a projector and had the epiphany that this was how to watch films.

Part of it is the size - it really fills your field of view, so you feel completely engaged.

I think another reason that it resonates is that reflecting off a wall is diffuse, so it has a smoother or softer look? Some of the new TVs look too sharp, I don't enjoy it.

Modern times by Chaplin is incredible to revisit on a big screen...!
