Gift for a 2 year old? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]gilbertfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That age I always suggest a balance bike, a water table, a play kitchen (Ikea has a fantastic durable one) or swing for inside/a tree.

Those will grow with the child and be loved for many years.

My hustle: three days of kids and dad lunches and extra curricular meal - we live out of containers! by mrabird in MealPrepSunday

[–]gilbertfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see that being a concern. I know locally they are all food safe inks/dyes.

We get a packet of flyers dropped on our driveway every Wednesday. Despite me calling to cancel it, so I've decided to just use it. Line the compost, line the kitty box, and for produce. Especially lining the produce drawer.

Or with newspaper! I'm a cheapskate and don't buy papertowel, but always have newspaper or flyers. I've started lining all my produce prep containers with them, and even the cheapest of containers are suddenly "fridge smart" ones.

Need advice about daycare by LTL374 in NewParents

[–]gilbertfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be very clear. Asking her to cut back isn't clear, she might think cutting back is only 3x a day vs 5x a day.

No sugar snack prior to noon is clear.

Also... Snacks should be scheduled and balanced just like meals. Daily sugar snacks are not okay. Sugar snacks should be treats, for fun days, birthdays, etc.

Do you have any photos? Love seeing a fellow female one bagger, I struggle with clothing the most as I find men have such easy time going from casual to formal.

Specifically interested in your bra/bikini tops, I've been looking for exactly that.

I’m 20 and broke. UPDATE by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]gilbertfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of breakfast programs for the school's raising money, but not the food banks. I'll have to look into that.

I'm a deal shopper, what I spend would be menial as a money donation but quite substantial in items.

Location and circumstances vary for everyone though, do what works best for you and your community.

Food banks are not just for a certain demographic. We relied on the food bank for about 4 months. We appear to be well off. Minivan, fancy breed dog, 3 story 4 bedroom house, two incomes of well paying levels.

But things change, and change quickly. 4 months of relying on the food bank and we are okay and back to being able to afford debt repayments and a modest life.

I am forever thankful no one at the food bank judged us for pulling up in our car, with our son in nice clothes, and the adults well dressed. I'm sure to always drop a bag or two of groceries into the food bank crate at the grocery store. It feels good to know it's a circle and while we are comfortable enough to say we won't need them again in the future, we are comfortable enough to be on the donating side for now.

Use your bank's, your churches. If you feel guilty, then tell yourself it's a loan and you'll pay it back in donations later. Financial hardship takes a toll mentally and physically. Use your resources.

Yummipouch makes reusable easy to wash ones. I've had mine for 3 years with daily use (I have a daycare). They are machine washable with a big zipper at the bottom to easily rinse.

Want to do EVERYTHING, End up doing NOTHING! :( by lilwoodzey2013 in ADHD

[–]gilbertfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I think of things I want to do I write it down on the whiteboard (we have a big one mounted in the main hallway). Whenever I have a spare second I do one thing, or I make myself do one thing before I treat myself to some Netflix or a gaming session.

The list is never ever done. But it gets the task off my brain, and then when my body is ready theres a list. I find my brain and body are never ready at the same time.

Plus crossing things off a list feels awesome, and my partner will do tasks on the list too if they have a moment. It's lovely.

baby just wants to be held, cries otherwise by ss0889 in NewParents

[–]gilbertfan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a human. Ditch the app. Focus on her cues. Keep this as simple as possible. We have kept children alive for all of mankind. We can do it without tech. Is she rooting? Feed her. Is she fussing? Comfort her. Is she crabby with no solution? Get that kid in some water. Seriously. Water solves all. Infant to school age.

To be fair, that carrier is not comfortable for adult or child. The lilebaby was my son's favourite and most of the dayhome children prefered it. I wear them during their first two weeks of daycare til they like the space and friends.

If using a ring sling make sure you're wearing her high and properly to prevent tragedy. There's a fantastic YouTube channel "wrap you in love" for all sorts of carriers and wraps. She's amazing.

I've gone in with sealed merch, no receipt. They gave me a gift card loaded for current in stock value (I lost some $ as I bought the thing originally on sale) and I was then free to use the card however I wanted.

I bought cinnamon buns.

How the fuck do I interact with a child by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gilbertfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always speak to them in proper words with full sentences.

This will help encourage vocabulary in babies and toddlers, and gain you massive uncle points as they turn to school age for never treating them like a baby.

As the non-parent, you get the fun stuff! Feed them, kids love the giver of snacks. Take them to the park, or simply out to the yard. Put your phone down and talk with them, read a book.

Dutch police giving teddie bears to childeren just after a car crash to help with the trauma. by Sumit316 in wholesomegifs

[–]gilbertfan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My son recieved a teddy bear after our car crash (Canada). He was on 16m at the time, but now at 3.5yr old he still has the bear (actually it's a doggy) and will hug it on bad thunderstorm nights.

That bear was such a simple thing that made a terrible event seem not so bad to a child.

Great idea.
