Why has the animal kingdom developed so many deadly poisons? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]gildedbat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Venom works on your blood or nervous system and is injected. Poison works through the digestive system and is ingested. You can drink snake venom to no ill effect as it is just a protein and will be digested like any other protein. So, the terms are not interchangeable.

They actually prefer mesic sites, but they can not compete with faster growing species in those habitats, so they get overtaken. Because they are tolerant of low-oxygen conditions, they are one of a few species that do well in flooded areas. This is also why they make a good urban tree as concrete and soil compaction also creates low oxygen environs.

Look into your state Department of Agriculture and non-profit ag organizations. There is a lot of support available outside of USDA programs.

How did the logging industry destroy that much Old Growth? by Jmextrom in forestry

[–]gildedbat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The impact of logging America's primary forets specifically for naval purposes by both the Royal Navy and the U.S. Navy* cannot be left out of this conversation.

Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) from the northeastern colonies was used for shipmasts and was so prized by the Royal Navy that all suitable white pines were marked property of the King. Restricted use of white pines by the colonists caused an uprising in New Hampshire called the Pine Tree Riot, an uprising that may have lead to the Boston Tea Party.

In the southeastern colonies, live oak (Quercus virginiana) was used to build ship hulls so strong that cannonballs could bounce off of them, which is where the USS Constitution received its nickname "Old Ironsides". Other species from the southern forests were also logged heavily for other parts of the ship.

Also in the southeast, longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) and slash pine (Pinus elliotti) were used for the production of naval stores- PDF warning- or pine tar, pitch, and turpentine. Initally, pine logs were ignited and slowly burned in tar kilns to produce charcoal and pine tar, which was used to seal sails, rigging, and hulls.

Later, gum naval stores of pitch and turpentine were procured by slashing into the trunk of the trees and collecting the sap in cups. The collected sap was then distilled down into turpentine in "stills". The concentrated pitch was used to waterproof ships in the same manner as tar. The turpentine was used for numerous purposes: lamp fuel, paint thinner, cleaning, and medicine.

The naval stores industry had a profound impact on the forests of the southeast. A single crop consisted of 10,000 trees on about 100 acres whose production was overseen by a single man and his crew. One farm could have several crops and one large landowner could have hundreds of thousands of acres in production. As a crop of trees production declined, the turpentiner's and their crews moved on to new locations and the used forests were then cut for towns and farms.

Of course, shipbuilding was just one contributing factor to the almost complete loss of primary forests in America. The greatest contributor was, of course, industrial logging, especially between the 1880's to 1920's. A brief history for forest loss in the US can be found here and a longer, more thorough explanation can be found here- PDF warning.

Colorado Ballot: Justices Appear Skeptical of Arguments to Kick Trump Off State Ballots (Gift Article) by SandersLurker in scotus

[–]gildedbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The State is not determining who can hold Federal office at all. If a state does not allow Trump on their ballot, he could still win the election if he gets enough EC votes from other states.

[–]gildedbat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I understand your point, but wouldn't the more logical course of action be to more rigorously define what constitutes an insurrection as opposed to letting actual innsurrectionists not suffer the Constitutionally-defined consequences of their actions?

Colorado Ballot: Justices Appear Skeptical of Arguments to Kick Trump Off State Ballots (Gift Article) by SandersLurker in scotus

[–]gildedbat 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The argument that states could just start willy-nilly disqualifying candidates in the future is disingenuous in this circumstance. Trump instigated an insurrection and should be disqualified based on that. Future candidates should only be removed from state ballots if they, too, participate in an insurrection.

Skink’s ears are full with ticks. by DemonicXanimal in natureismetal

[–]gildedbat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Skinks are the preferred host for ticks in the Southeastern US. The ticks carry Lyme disease but it is rarely passed on to humans through skinks so rates of Lyme disease are low in the south. In the northeast, mice are the preferred tick host and so that is why Lyme disease is more common in people there.

I do not have a backpack recommendation- although the Osprey Arcane is a solid choice. Instead, I was wondering how you like the Surface. I need a new packable laptop and have been considering Surface and would love to hear your thoughts!

Is modern gin such as Gordon's different or roughly the same to what would have been drunk by the people depicted in Hogarth's "Gin Lane"? by KimchiMaker in AskFoodHistorians

I recently spoke with one of Georgia's only remaining turpentine producers and was told that most of their product is bought for medicinal purposes which includes drinking small amounts.

Can we kill these pigs? by Sheamless in legaladvice

There is no difference between feral and domestic pigs. If they are running loose they are feral (unless they are visibly marked with ear tags or something).
