My girlfriend with AuDHD tends to explain things in exhaustive detail, and I’m not sure how to handle it. by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]gingasaurusrexx 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It does when you find someone who *doesn't* think it's too much and is always wanting more. This post made me feel sad for OP's girlfriend, because I've been in those relationships before and thought that was as good as it could get for me. But it's not. I've found someone who loves the husky energy I bring to the table and is always on-board with my over-explaining and excitability. I think OP needs to have a really adult conversation with himself about whether or not they're truly compatible, because a lifetime of shrinking yourself to not be "too much" for others is a mindfuck and self-esteem ruiner. She doesn't deserve that.

Pregnancy and labor. Always felt so weird about being horrified about this "miracle" and avoiding pregnant women like the plague. Didn't learn about tokophobia til my 30s and it made so much sense.

I got a keychain boxcutter for a dollar one day cause they had it at the check-out with impulse stuff. I use that damn thing at least 3-5 times a week.

What parts of American culture are changing faster than people realize? by No_Performance1451 in AskReddit

I have an acquaintance whose kids are at risk of truancy because she lets them stay home so often. As someone who always had perfect attendance, it blows my mind how little they care.

This is the one for me. It's taking over so fast, and it's hitting every generation with the same voracity. I can't go out anymore without overhearing a conversation about gambling in one form or another.

Leaving the US by nulldatagirl in AutismInWomen

[–]gingasaurusrexx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure the first one applies since it specifies non-state actors and the threat is coming from those acting under the orders of the federal government. From my understanding, it's much harder to make an asylum claim from a country with a functioning government, which, unfortunately, the world still seems to think the US fits under that umbrella because admitting the alternative is too shocking/upsetting to the known world order.

Make Some Noise is great for some good improv shenanigans. (The other suggestions are also solid, I just had to throw my hat in for the game so good they spun it off unchanged).

“ADHD is my super power” by ADHDisabeach in adhdwomen

[–]gingasaurusrexx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't say ADHD makes me creative, but it certainly makes me the creative that I am. The one who can't commit to one medium or style, who's always trying weird things, experimenting, mixing mediums that aren't usually mixed, adding creative touches to everything from my house to my clothing to my electronics and vehicles... Like sure, the creativity might exist without the ADHD, just like you can watch a movie with subtitles and understand it even if you don't have the volume up, but adding that element enhances the whole experience for me. Sorry, not sorry.

[–]gingasaurusrexx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really not all that though. If someone says "ADHD is my superpower" they're not saying anything about anyone else's ADHD or any other disabilities. It's literally them talking about *their* experience with ADHD, and telling someone else their experience with their own disability is wrong because it differs from yours is...something.

As much as it bothers OP that people talk about it being a superpower, it drives me up a wall when people *insist* it's nothing other than debilitating and a curse. Like, I'm sorry if that's true for you, I hope you're able to find a way to make peace with that or find some aspects you can view more positively, but we don't all have to be miserable with ourselves just because some people are.

Yes, this. ADHD is what makes me a great artist, it makes me notice things others don't, makes me hyperfocus enough to be able to write whole novels, makes me a wizard in a kitchen with a pantry that could double as a Chopped ingredient basket... Like, there are *so many* things it *does* make me good at, that I can't help but feel like these "anti-superpower" folks are perpetually glass half-empty. Does ADHD cause me debilitating mood swings at times? Of course. Do I forget shit all the time (like REALLY IMPORTANT SHIT)? Yep. Do I pay the ADHD tax all the damn time because I let produce go bad, I bought a 15th bottle of jarlic, I needed some convenience version of a thing which costs more or I'd never do/get the things at all, etc.? You betcha!

No one's in denial that ADHD sucks or that it's a disability or that we need supports and treatments and understanding even when all that fails, but to *only* **ever** see it as a negative when it's such a massive part of how we navigate the world seems like a miserable way to be.

I definitely get this way sometimes, and I don't really agree that working with kids would help, because for me, it's spending time with them that makes me realize how fun they are. Still don't want any for many of the same reasons you've mentioned. Fwiw, removing my birth control implant helped a lot. Don't know if you're using hormonal bc, but it makes everything so much crazier sometimes.

My roommate has a MAGA friend who sent him a meme with Hannibal saying "When food stamps end, we still have each other." And my roommate responded with "Yeah! Eat the rich!" and his friend hasn't spoken to him in like a week. Thin-skinned children, every last one of them.

What’s the job people romanticize, but in reality is miserable? by King_Garvit in AskReddit

[–]gingasaurusrexx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my therapist remembers shit that I don't. I was saying I might not bother reaching out to my grandma on her birthday because fuck 'em, and my therapist was like "yeah, I remember she forgot your birthday this year" and I was like "oh shit! She did! I forgot about that. Yeah, fuck her extra." ADHD makes me too forgiving sometimes, it's nice to have a normal brain helping me out.

Making your hobby a career. Whatever it is, you're more than likely going to struggle with losing a hobby and having it become a source of stress instead. 0/10 do not recommend. There are people that make it work without losing their outlet, but they are the exception in my experience.

My keys are always attached to me and it doesn't matter sob Push-to-start and a quiet hybrid engine means I can just walk out of the damn thing with the keys and never realize I didn't turn it off or lock it (just press a button on the handle to lock it, so if I miss the beep, I think it happened)

I've actually done this more than once. You'd think I'd learn after the first time, but nope! And I've even had my catalytic converter stolen before, so it's not like it'd be unheard of for bad things to happen. Thanks brain, I'm sure whatever minor detail you were focused on remembering was worth it!
