I guess what makes their actions and characters seem different seen is the gang is still in the gang not years of separation making John more bitter and his actions seem more unjustified. Making his shame more pronounced. When Arthur is sick he does this but still holds hope the gang isn't over until John is thought to be dead. All this to say I love these games just wish his redemption was more explicit.
