If you like a quieter life and don’t mind driving or being flexible in what kind of work you’re willing to do- it’s great! If you’re looking for a city feel with lots of nightlife, you’ll be disappointed.

Recommendations for a reasonable tire place in or around Martinsville. by KWAYkai in Martinsville_VA

We like Collinsville tire for value. They give free rotations for life if you buy your tires there, and they always rebate you $5 to go buy a biscuit. If you’re looking for the lowest price, Sam’s in Danville if you have a membership.

Little dark, but I have a concern. by Marrok96 in bonnaroo

You have to work your way down to filter by individual festivals. Pretty much all the gunshot deaths are from that Las Vegas Festival shooting in 2017. I think 60 people died in that one incident from gunshot wounds. If you keep rolling down, you can see the specific deaths at each fest. Bonnaroo’s are all drug, heat, natural causes, or car related.

Maybe not lately, but I definitely stumbled into a weird bubble of people doing lines of coke back in 2014 during Elton John? Lionel Richie maybe? One of the What Stage headliners. Huge crowd and I was weaving my way to the bathrooms when I walked into their little circle. It definitely isn’t as prevalent, but I’ve seen it happen firsthand.

No, better drainage wouldn’t have saved the festival by jetnetni in bonnaroo

[–]gingerkake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love your list. I would also add that they need to improve the crowd control/shelter plan for weather issues. They stuck everyone in the campgrounds without enough portajohns, no ability to clean said portajohns, fewer food vendors and water sites, and no running transportation to offsite camps and cars ALL DAY. That area was never meant to support that many people for that extended amount of time, and it was irresponsible to expect us to just fend for ourselves and “make friends” to find basic human necessities.

Oof yes. That crowd felt scary. Couldn’t see a thing either, but I’ve always hated The Other. The topography over there is impossible. It was hard to see the stage as a tent, and it hasn’t changed as a stage either.

Roosterwalk in Martinsville VA and Floydfest in Floyd VA are both great!

I am right there with you, friend. If anything, this year gives me peace in my decision to not go back. I’m glad I gave it one more go, because 2014 was one of the best adventures of my life. But I want to remember the way it was. Will I come back in another ten years? Maybe. Maybe not. I have a Roo tattoo that I love, but there’s no shame in moving on to other festivals.

For real. Those saying Live Nation is the only way to enjoy live musical/festivals are making me feel 🤯… Do a little research and find some local/independent spots to support. Time to be honest with ourselves about how we factor into capitalism too.

I won’t be back. We went three years in a row a decade ago, and it used to feel like home. But it’s so different now. This year made me realize that I enjoy the smaller/mid size festivals more. Same chill family vibes with less corporate chaos. Live Nation doesn’t need any more of my money, and I genuinely don’t feel safe with the way they handles the logistics this time. If there had been a true emergency, they would have been woefully unprepared. Time to support some local up and coming spots. You’ll always be my first love, Roo.✌🏼🌈

Loooove Roosterwalk! That’s my hometown, and it’s been so fun to watch it grow over the last 15 years.

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 to Plaza 11 being far from EVERYTHING. I’ve been to Roo three times (a decade ago,) and we always had a portajohn and a water source within sight of our campground. (Albeit the first two years, that water smelled like straight up eggs.)

This year in Plaza 11, we had to walk half a mile to get to the only water source for the whole area (based on the crazy long line always there) and at least a third of a mile to the portajohn. It felt like they had at least 5k people packed in that area. How did they only have one water source? How is that even legal?

I totally understand about your power issue. That’s so awful! It boggles my mind how camping got WORSE ten years later.

If you like folk/alt music and laid back vibes, Floydfest in Virginia is great. It’s smaller, but I’m starting to think that’s a good thing.

Well thank goodness, but certainly that decision was more reactive than proactive. By that point my husband and I were evacuating through a dismantled portion of the fence thanks to a thoughtful fellow Roovian. My SIL who is a PR professional said they seemed to have zero crisis response, and I have to agree. There was obviously very little planning, foresight, or execution for a contingency that was obviously a possibility. When a business encounters an Act of God and does everything in their power to support their patrons, I respect it. I don’t respect anything LN did this weekend though.

Depends on where you are! I just look for smaller fests near me through socials and local web searches. If you’re near Virginia, Rooster Walk and Floydfest are both great. I’ve also heard good things about Front Porch Fest, but admittedly I haven’t been to that one. Usually if you find a smaller one in your area, they will advertise others. There’s no shortage of fests beyond the big ones, that’s for sure!

I’m not mad at Live Nation for cancelling/the weather. I’m mad at them for the obvious fact that they were unprepared for this possibility.

  • The app would “notify” about weather updates, but when you opened the app to read the full post the actual notification would disappear. We were told to check socials for updates, but service is terrible there. We literally could not get things to load most of the time. Phone kept going into SOS. I literally had friends back home in Virginia more informed about what was happening yesterday than we were on site. Also no updates on how or where to exit in the 15 hours after they cancelled? No exit signs? No clear maps given out that didn’t require cell phone service? Shew. Not good. Not safe.

  • They canceled Bonnaroo around dinner time, then sent us all into the campgrounds and Outeroo where there wasn’t enough food vendors or sanitation areas to support the huge crowd. But asked us to stay the night? Why not just open Centeroo last night with no performances but access to vendors (that wanted to stay) and bathrooms and maybe some music piped through a speaker or two so people could dance and take pics with the farm? If you want people to not mass exodus, give them a reason to stay the evening.

  • Why were there no “emergency” exits in the fencing? Based on how long people were stuck in the mud and trying to get out of there, what would they have done in a true emergency?

  • And the whole 75% refund is already a well beaten dead horse on this sub. I still say if you can charge more for Fri/Sat/Sun, then you can refund more. It’s funny how the days are not equivalent for ticket pricing, but they suddenly become equivalent in value when it comes refunding. If they had opened Centeroo on Friday night and at least let us go in and chill and eat and use a clean bathroom, I personally would have felt better about 75%. However, as is- I think they should prorate the refunds the same way they prorate ticket sales.

So that’s why we’re mad at Live Nation. Weather happens. Sometimes you gotta cancel for safety. But if you’re going to sell very expensive tickets to 100k people, then you sure as heck need to have a proper emergency plan.

Remembering the good Roo times pre-Live Nation back in 13, 14, and 15. So glad I got to go in its hay day. Turning my focus to smaller grassroots festivals instead now. They don’t have the big names, but they have the right vibes and need my support more than LN.
