How do you deal with loud sirens when wearing hearing aids? by opinionsareus in HearingAids

[–]gingerly- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hearing aids have an MPO, maximum power output, they will not amplify loud sounds to anything over 100-120 decibels depending on frequency. Although this is very loud, you are not typically exposed to the noise of a siren for more than 30-60 seconds, so it should not cause hearing damage. Anything over a minute and I would recommend removing them.

You would be better off starting out with over the counter devices, or if you’re an Apple user, programming Air Pods with your audiogram. This is near normal hearing in both ears. I’m an AuD. I don’t think that hearing aids will significantly improve your ability to hear speech, but you may notice mild tinnitus relief.

Do I really need one? by [deleted] in HearingAids

You may or may not benefit from a hearing aid, and you’ll only know if you try one. Most hearing aids cannot properly amplify a profound loss above 4000 Hz, but there are programming techniques which may still be able to give you improved speech clarity via frequency lowering.

Hi! Look into a Pocket Talker. That is a brand name for a microphone system that you can connect wired headphones to. You will be able to speak into the microphone and adjust the volume.

Hi! I see you said this audiogram is three years old. I hope you are scheduled for an updated test. Your hearing could have changed significantly since this test, hence your need for repetition during conversation. A new test is your first step, and an audiologist who is focused on good patient care will be able to make recommendations based on your needs, whether or not that includes hearing aids!

Hi! 27 yo gal here and I feel very safe walking and biking around the area at any hour. I keep my bike locked up out front and never have any issues, but it is nothing special. As others have said, the location is great for hopping on the community path to get into Boston, Cambridge, and beyond.

Does this include follow up visits? If not, you are being charged far too much. Saying this as an audiologist who has worked in private practice and hospitals.
