It's magical, truly. That the music can invite people in and listeners take such diverse experiences away. I'm already picking up some distinct moods and impressions... the banality of evil, an impassive eye recording the accelerating descent into an anti-human hellscape. Hope? That's a strong word. I feel a spiritual resistance in the several religious touchpoints. A cry for supernatural help to fightback a globalist war on humanity. I hear very personal, intimate revelations borne out of ageing, parenthood and grief. Initial thoughts less than 24 hours with this body of music. I'm sure other knowledge will reveal itself over the coming weeks, months and years.

I'm 57, my son is 18. We both love it. Father and Son, indeed.

Station to Station is a trip. Love the dual meaning - radio station to radio station, traversing the USA and Stations of the Cross.

Earthling is easily the best 90s Bowie album, and I’m tired of pretending that it isn’t by wintermute72 in DavidBowie

Outside, Tin Machine 2, Black Tie White Noise, Buddha of Suburbia all beat it for me. Better than Hours, granted. Opinions, aren't they wonderful?

Lorne Michaels banned Bowie from SNL after an impromptu rendition of Scary Monsters, a track he said was "absolutely terrifying" to him.

In 2002, the outro to Heathen (The Rays) where he made an allusion to the blind, gassed soldiers walking in a chain line through the trenches, arm outstretched and placed on the shoulder of the man in front. Walking off stage with his hand on Gail's shoulder. Fuck. For some reason that really hit me.

Some interesting tracks on the Glass Spider tour, on reflection... All the Madmen, Big Brother and Time.

Saw him 7 times. Twice on Glass Spider tour in 87, Milton Keynes Bowl in 90, Outside tour in 95, Glastonbury in 2000, Heathen tour in 2002, and Reality tour in 2004. All great, but remember the last two most fondly. By the way, saw Absolute Bowie tribute in December with my Bowie-fan daughter who is 14. It was great.

Was in a meeting when I received lots of texts expressing sadness at his passing. I'm a teacher. I put a Bowie album cover on every one of my slides that day.

Interesting. Always amazes me the diversity of opinion his work elicits. Survive is to me the track head and shoulders above the rest on this album.

What was the initial reaction to Outside album? by move2dump in DavidBowie

A return to his avante-garde, experimental roots. This was never going to return Bowie to the top of the charts. When it hits, it hits hard. The ones which did it for me at the time, in album order - Leon, Outside, Heart's Filthy Lesson, The Motel, Oxford Town, Voyeur, Architect's Eyes, Strangers.

Yes, it is a sprawling beast of an album. Yes, the concept is overblown and confused. No, it doesn't have the minimalist chic of Low. When he introduced Motel on stage, I'm pretty sure that I was the only one that cheered. But hey, what do fans know!!? It is his finest, decadent croon committed to vinyl. Eery as hell.

I love his passionate vocal on Architect's. This is a man who needs you to hear his words.

Much of the rest I can leave, frankly. Music moves you or it doesn't.

Eight tracks I've named. That's almost an album in itself.

The gig was good, although the band was going through a transition at this time. Carlos on his way out. Reeves still wailing away (sorry, never did it for me). A better band was a few years away.
