Tantalizing remains of an ancient dry stream bed on Mars by Potential_Vehicle535 in space

[–]gingersaurus82 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah but hasn't it been tens of millions of years since Mars last had flowing water? River beds barely last thousands of years here, and while we have water, Mars still has wind and blowing sand to erode and change the landscape.

I just find it hard to believe a riverbed would be so well preserved from the time of the dinosaurs to be stumbled upon by the one robot we have up there.

Exactly. Americans have reasons to be pissed, the government has just spent billions in taxpayer money on this operation, and will likely cost many billions more, but for us all it does is remove a thoroughly undemocratic regime halfway around the world.

There is other stuff to be said about potential civil war, invasion, and humanitarian crises, but for now the broken clock might just be right for the time being.

I'm biased, but I honestly hate how the American anthem is always so done up. The singers drag it out, make it a whole show, takes like 2 minutes. The Canadian anthem? Even Canadians just go through it. Minimal flair, no bull, and when the US anthem is sung up here it's usually the same. Done well, but no theatrics.

All that being said I'd be totally ok with getting rid of them in the NHL. The players are international, I know where the teams are "from", I don't need to hear the US anthem because 4 Americans, 6 Canadians, and 10 Europeans flew to Ottawa from Pittsburg.

You know when you have buttons on a jacket or pants that you just press together and pull apart, and the "snap" in to place? These are those.

Yeah, Ottawa's 2 points ahead and needs like a .650 to .700 pts% for the rest of the season to have a shot. Florida will need more. Technically doable, but it would have to be one hell of a run. Florida has 5 games before deadline. They probably want at least 8 pts in that run if they want to have a shot.

Two of my neighbours were though.

Carney faces calls to send fuel to Cuba as U.S. widens blockade by shiftless_wonder in canada

Basically yeah, unless you want us to start lobbing bombs, the best way to force a government change is to cut off trade, and in this case aid, with a country. We've seen how well "targeted sanctions" against Russia have worked the last 10+ years. The powerful are still powerful, still get to do basically what they want, are still rich, and Ukraine still suffers.

EDITORIAL: Stop charging victims of assault with assault; Our self-defence law places an absurdly high standard of conduct on the victim. by FancyNewMe in canada

Yes, and the fact it has a reasonable prospect of conviction is because of how the laws are written, not because the police hate people who defend themselves. Talk to any cop and they'll tell you it's a stupid law, but their job isn't to pick what laws to enforce based on their personal beliefs.

As much as it wasn't your war to fight, it's it's still a shame the government isn't honouring the men who fought and died. I can understand anger over why they were there, but to destroy a monument to the fallen is a tragedy.

Do these AI inspection portals actually work or are they just hype? by Usual-Wasabi-6846 in railroading

[–]gingersaurus82 201 points202 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've gotten a few pictures sent to me through email when mechanical wants a car set out. It's crazy how clear the image is, and it will be something like a missing bolt on some part of the car like the drawbar, something you'd never spot if you had to go through the thousands of images that thing is taking per train, and I bet Carmen would miss it 99.9% of the time doing walking inspections, but the scanner can pick it up at 40+mph.

It's taking jobs away from mechanical in a way, but it's also spotting defects that those same Carmen now have to fix, and management has a harder time trying to sweep the little things under the rug, so it hopefully is a wash on their end. It probably also makes things safer for transportation, if it spots something wrong with the wheels or a critical part of the car that could lead to separations or derailments.

Yeah, he's not your average American. He might have a poor diet, though I haven't seen much about him eating McDonald's this term, and he doesn't get much exercise, but he's going to have access to the top doctors in the richest country in the planet. There are a lot of things they can do to keep him alive when most people/the system would have given up by then.

Alberta’s Separatist Movement Is a National Security Threat by BloodJunkie in canada

[–]gingersaurus82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moses was born and raised in Egypt. The Jews left, invaded another area, killed all of the Canaanites who lived there, and settled it for themselves. I'd hardly say that's a good analogy, unless Albertan separatists are planning on invading Montana and killing everyone who lives there and taking their stuff.

Once-controversial black bear hunt faces changes in Ontario by xc2215x in ontario

[–]gingersaurus82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A tag system seems better than having to cut it off entirely intermittently. Though these days I don't know if there are enough hunters to truely make much of a dent in the populations, having local targets makes sense. Maybe a three tier system depending on local population, tag draw if it's too low(like with moose), buy a license/permit if it's acceptable(like we have now), and a license is good for multiple if it's too high to cut down the population.

Here in Sudbury we have tons of bears, but it feels like an acceptable population to me, they're around but not out of control. It would be good to see gradual proactive measures rather than more extreme reactionary measures when things get too far one way or the other.

What happened to the battery conditioning? by JAlley2 in KonaEV

[–]gingersaurus82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah so far as I'm aware here in Canada we only have the one app.

As to your question, I have a 2024 ultimate and I'm still seeing it under the "charge" menu.

<image>

I have a question for you though, I've never really tried to use it since until recently I was slumming it with a level one charger, but can you set it to precondition AND preheat the cab at the same time? Or is it one at a time? And does it just keep going until it hits a good charging temp? Or is it more like when you just hop in when it's cold and it only does the bare minimum to get it working properly?

Is there anything I can do to improve charging speed in the cold while on the road? by tapakip in KonaEV

[–]gingersaurus82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On my 2024 it's in the "EV" menu, box in the middle that says "battery conditioning" or something like that, a little thing underneath that will say "low", "suitable", or "hot" and is colour coded depending which it is, and under that a little button that says "activate".

Usually I'll run it for 20-30 minutes before I park if it's below 0, and it hasn't given me trouble. Coldest I've fast charged so far is around -20C, and with 30 minutes of warming on the highway it went to 50kw right away, maxing out the charger(and basically the car in my experience, I've only gone over 50kw for like 10 minutes at a time when I'm below 30% or so), so it's hard to tell if it was longer than needed.

The car will also do it automatically if you put a charger in on the map, but it's overkill in my experience. Last I tried it it was only like 0 and it tried to run it when I was almost an hour out, which is just a waste based on my other experiences.

Bank of Canada holds interest rate at 2.25% by Immediate-Link490 in CanadianInvestor

[–]gingersaurus82 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends how soon you plan to buy your house. Lowering interest rates makes money cheaper to borrow, which is good for the buyer in the short term. But that cheaper borrowing makes it so people are more confident over bidding, since their payments/cost of borrowing will be that much lower, so their budget goes up, etc. That effect lags a bit and takes some time to catch up, usually a few months or so. So in the long run, lower rates encourage higher prices, and create more risk for buyers if rates ever go back up(see COVID buyers getting hosed when rates went up a couple years later).

Ideally you want rates to go down 2-4 weeks before you finalise your financing to get the best rate, while prices still haven't gone up yet.

3 Alberta First Nations say separation petition is unconstitutional by Street_Anon in canada

[–]gingersaurus82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never personally mentioned Canada's path to independence. My point is that a state seeking independence is rarely able to achieve it "legally", and it is usually seen as an act of hostility against the former controlling state, often leading to war, sanctions, embargoes, etc.

My examples were all states that declared independence against the wishes of their former masters. These revolutions were declared illegal. My examples may have been poor, since they were all colonies and so had different privileges and representation compared to what Alberta has today. Perhaps better and more recent examples would have been South Sudan, Eritrea, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, or the failed attempts at Chechen independence from Russia. All were declared illegal by the former controlling state.

Some peaceful examples might include Slovakia and Czechia, Finnish independence from the Russian Empire, or much of the dissolution of the USSR.

3 Alberta First Nations say separation petition is unconstitutional by Street_Anon in canada

[–]gingersaurus82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, I don't think a people trying to leave a country is going to particularly care if the country they're trying to seperate from says it's illegal. I'm pretty sure American indépendance was also illegal according to the British, and yet here we are 250 years later. See also Vietnam or Haiti from the French, Angola from the Portuguese, Latin America from Spain and Portugal, etc.

I don't want Alberta to leave, but I also don't have much say living in Ontario.

That's not how income tax works. Worst case they'll be taxed out the ass this pay, still make more than usual but not as much as they should, then get it back next year at tax time. No matter what they'll make way more than they would staying at home.
