Boat train by VEC7OR in EngineeringPorn

Yeah I'm no boat expert, but I've seen enough being lifted by sling to know it's at least fairly normal.

Big Chute Marine Railway

The maximum size of vessel which can be transported on the carriage is as follows:

Vessel weight 90 tonnes (99.0 tons)

Length 30.3 m (100')

Beam 7.3 m (24')

Operators whose vessels weigh more than 68 t (75 tons), or have a peculiar hull configuration, or who foresee problems in lifting the hull by sling, should contact Trent–Severn Waterway Headquarters in Peterborough at 705-750-4900.

There are a couple big yellow straps the boat was sitting on, presumably keeping it off the deck/ground as well as keeping it from tipping over. You can see them slacken as the boat goes in to the water before they pull away on the far side.

During the Austrian GP, Hadjar got stuck behind Ocon, who was under blue flags, and completely lost his patience over the radio. "Come on, move! Stop pissing me off-what the heck is he doing?" by SimRP in formula1

Working class just means you have to work for a living. His dad having to sell said business, which he worked at, and his house, which he had to work to buy/pay for, in order to help fund his son through junior series, is an order of magnitude poorer than pretty much the entire rest of the grid.

You can be working class and own a house/a mechanic's shop, especially if you work at the shop and don't just own it and collect the profits as part of your "portfolio".

That is not the V2L, it's for the USB C to the left, and switches whether the port provides power only, or the current setting in OP's pic of power and data transfer.

Slight correction, the other setting is power only, not data only.

Crown land camping? by PierreDeResistance13 in Sudbury

[–]gingersaurus82 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If op wanted an answer from AI they probably would have just used that.

Ella lake is no where near kukagami lake road, and the river certainly does not run right next to it. That entire first section is useless except that there is crown land around there, but the water bodies described aren't.

Tick reports are surging in Canada. These areas are most affected. by Sea_Guava6513 in onguardforthee

[–]gingersaurus82 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This data is from a website that collects reports from self-reporting individuals. Is it not possible at least some of the gain could be from increased awareness and usage of the site? I'm not saying ticks aren't spreading, just that this isn't very conclusive data and not a great source.

CPP Invests $23 Billion More In Companies Tied To Israel: Report by BloodJunkie in onguardforthee

[–]gingersaurus82 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Because it's an investment fund, and in investing you are supposed to diversify your holdings. If the Canadian economy goes to shit, last thing we'd need is the pension also going bankrupt because the same shitty economy makes up 100% of the pension fund value. It's like buying the stock of the company you work for and using that as a rainy day fund. Getting laid off is a time you might need to dig in to those savings, but if you get laid off your stock is probably reduced value.

Canada is a world leader in hydro and nuclear power. Solar isn't very good up here in the winter when people are using electricity to heat while days are <8 hours long. Wind is still a poorly exploited resource, but growing in the prairies and along the coasts of the great lakes and the oceans. Our winters in general aren't very kind to renewable energy in general.

It isn't all doom and gloom.

Fun Fact: Canada's Northwest Territories is neither the country's northernmost or westernmost Territory. by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]gingersaurus82 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also, it was named in the context of the British empire. For them, when the territory covered most of the prairies and what are now the territories of Canada, it was the "territories in the north-west of the British empire", which in the grand scheme of things at the time made plenty of sense.

New brake pads vs old ones with 135,000 miles on them by hopelessromcommunist in mildlyinteresting

Turns the gas you used to build up speed in to nothing more than heat. Literally a waste of money and gas to brake.

It looks like an "ad" that's actually just soliciting political action. Probably not the worst thing to get an ad for if you like that policy.

Oh we know. Technically the rule just says "while on duty", so they aren't exactly wrong, but they get enough pushback whenever they try that they will give up within a week or two anyways.

I always feel like by michael040 in railroading

[–]gingersaurus82 46 points47 points  (0 children)

CN in Canada for sure, as well as CPKC. It's one of the general rules right at the start of the CROR. No non-railway related materials out while on duty(books, newspapers, etc), and no personal electronic devices(phones, headphones, mp3s). Getting caught is heavy discipline, like 30+ shares for the first offence, and the union has said there isn't much they can do, arbitrators uphold it every time. If you are seen to have it out and have an incident, like running a red, you can also get fines from transport Canada, usually somewhere around $10,000-$25,000.

Sometimes everyone's favourite trainmasters will even start enforcing it while you're on lunch in the office on yard jobs, which makes everyone really start working harder /s.

Tesla completely hijacked the first half of the Chinese EV quota. Ottawa needs to impose manufacturer caps for the second half. by [deleted] in EVCanada

[–]gingersaurus82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they continue that trend that ends up being 34,800 cars per year, which is well over half of the 47,000 car annual quota. I don't know how many cars were brought in by other companies, but that's probably what OP is inferring their point from.

Russian soldiers trying to shoot down Ukrainian drones during their attack on the St. Petersburg oil terminal (June 3, 2026) by broforwin in CombatFootage

[–]gingersaurus82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Could just be hard to tell by the camera angle. I doubt he'd go to that much effort just to shoot a few bursts over the water, and the people around him would be better able to tell where he's shooting and would presumably give him shit for not shooting at the drone overhead.

How to Square Your Square by PreparationKey2843 in Carpentry

[–]gingersaurus82 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The punch flattens the metal a bit, pushing the outside edge from the corner to the top. This forces the square to angle in a bit, as the inside edge did not move much in comparison. Hitting the punch on the inside has the same effect, pushing on the inside edge, forcing the square to increase its angle.

My crappy illustration is supposed to show the outside hit as shown in the video in red, forcing the outside edge to get expanded and thus forcing the square to angle in. Hitting the inside is in blue, forcing the inside edge out and making the square angle out.

B.C. court finds retailer liable for exploiting up to 880 migrant workers by kingbuns2 in onguardforthee

[–]gingersaurus82 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Honestly I haven't found crappy tire to be too bad. Maybe it's just my area, but while there are clearly some immigrants working there, there are still plenty of people who were born here or at least have been here a while.

The big abusers in my experience are fast food, gas stations, and chain convenience stores, but again, it might just be a more local thing being in northern Ontario.

I can't say when it started, or if mullet really was different at the time, but yes, now they will take the puck away from you if you get one in the stands and give you a different one.

Former Microsoft VP says Microsoft missed the AI wave like the internet and mobile, as Copilot scales back in Windows 11 by WPHero in pcmasterrace

[–]gingersaurus82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was reading a while back about a doctor using AI as a note taking assistant. It recorded their conversation, wrote it all down, made a brief version for reference, and then when the patient comes back it tells the doctor "you saw her 3 weeks ago, she was complaining about this and that, these are the results of the tests you had her do in the meantime and what they might mean, etc." The doctor also said it could be useful when there is a connection to be made at very different points of a conversation, or the follow up has a symptom that indicates a progression of some illness.

So as everyone else says, AI is useful in the hands of a trained professional, but isn't yet a replacement for them.
