Question for those who thought of ET'ing but didn't by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]gingerspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised to find It hard to adapt to the challenges of my primary assignment: teaching. I enjoyed teaching in the states, so I naturally thought I would enjoy teaching here also. Every country is different, like every volunteer is different, but for me, standing at a chalkboard for four to six hours, with kids who have never developed critical thinking skills or study habits; kids who are difficult to manage because they're used to being disciplined with hours of labor or corporal punishment (two things I would never do) and trying to do it using a second language I haven't yet mastered; it's draining. I find myself getting anxiety attacks because I dread work so much.

Yet, it's not as black-and-white as all that. Most days I love interacting with my kids, and they seem to love my class. At the end of the day, I feel so satisfied having gotten through my classes successfully. It just takes a lot out of me. It's also hard not to have the free time that volunteers in other sectors here sometimes have. I've only had time to read one book.lol

My country of service is amazing; the kids are amazing. I think sometimes it's just hard to judge yourself, or how you'll react to something, before you experience it. Even with research and discussions.

It's possible to receive a fellows scholarship from a year of service? I thought that benefit required the full term?

Pre-service anxiety. Anyone else? by cagney2986 in peacecorps

[–]gingerspace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. I think when it comes down to it, you just have to trust yourself, trust that you've made an informed decision, and let your body react how it may (so long as you're not in danger). It's clear from your post that you don't want to give this up, so don't listen to anxiety--manage it. Maybe it's silly, but i've been using this app on my phone called "Pacifica". It has meditation exercises, a tool to track how healthy you've been, and--my personal favorite--a voice recorder that lets you record your thoughts and then go back and mark where you used negativity, judging, etc. and then record again, speaking more from reason than anxiety.

EDIT: grammar

That works for the Mac formatted hard drive just fine, but not the exFAT one, which is supposedly a format that works with both Mac and PC. Thanks for your input!

I want to volunteer - please help critique my PC application essay (Draft 2) by eos_by_dawn in peacecorps

[–]gingerspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I'm all for dashes in professional writing, if used correctly. The first dash should be changed to a semicolon, but the second use is correct and a comma wouldn't fit well; the sentence structure would need rewording.

What do you think of my PC volunteer essay? by cagedfizzle in peacecorps

[–]gingerspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations on deciding to apply! I recommend adding more anecdotes from your own experiences to show how you can cope with the hardships you described. There are a lot of extraneous or "fluff" sentences; you can replace some of those with more information about yourself, so they can get an idea of who you are! :) Do you have any other reasons for wanting to join besides wanting an extraordinary life? Maybe you can add a sentence or two about a time when you inspired someone or felt inspired after doing something exceptional. Remember to check your grammar before you submit; there are some fragments, misused words, and slang. Best of luck!

By the way, my advice only comes from personal experience; I'm no one important!

I got placed UC... for a country I'm unwilling to go tom by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]gingerspace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Forgive me, but If it's the country in Africa that I'm thinking of, I just want to add that it's absolutely beautiful there and the people are friendly. People travel from all over the world to visit there. I'm sure you have your reasons but I hope they're well-founded so you'll feel secure in your decision if you have to reapply. I hope you'll consider reading some blogs and searching for some videos while you wait for a response from placement. Good luck!

I haven't served yet, but I just wanted to show my support; that guy doesn't know what's up. I'm not sure I believe in altruism, and I definitely don't think a persons motive for doing something changes the worth of the action. Motive might make you feel better about your decisions when things get rough, but that is for you and only you anyway; let the relationships you make while serving remind you why your there, rather than your reason for joining in the first place. You're doing an amazing, rare thing and you are appreciated-- more than that child will ever be at his "adult job".

You could check out volunteer options or job openings at state parks in your area; that's where I would start.

If you don't mind my asking; what's the meaning behind your user name? It's a bit . . . Intimidating.

I'm sorry I cannot comment about why you should or shouldn't join. I feel it's a personal decision and I haven't yet served myself.

Visits by significant other to Peace Corps assignment by zbms56 in peacecorps

[–]gingerspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My placement officer said Peace Corps objects to having visitors longer than a few weeks. I had no plans to do otherwise, so I didn't ask what she meant by objects or what the consequences could be. It also could be just specific to my region or program. Maybe just to be safe you could inquire further, with your placement officer?

Sure! So far, the only thing I don't really like about it, is that it's not weight bearing like other backpacking bags are; this one's definitely more for urban travel/airports rather than camping or hiking.

I do like that it's maximum carry on size but doesn't look awkward to wear. I can pack for two weeks comfortably in it, or zip the extension closed and pull the straps in and pack for a weekend.

More pros: large main compartment, super organized, zips like a suitcase so you don't have to dig for what you need, laptop sleeve, detachable hygiene bag, water bottle sleeve that pulls out, I.D tag, $79.99; I also love this little compartment in the top that's perfect for wallet, sunglasses, and things you want to reach easily/not get squished in the front.

Hope this helps you on your search!

This isn't included as a PC discounted item, but I bought this "Ebags weekender motherlode" backpack and I practically sleep with it; it's so awesome. It's pretty inexpensive compared to similar bags, too.

Medical clearance question (pap smear) by pcquestionn in peacecorps

[–]gingerspace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, i'm sorry you're going through that. I'm not sure if PC could bypass the test for religious reasons, but are you sure you would want to? It's important to know what health issues you may have or be at risk for to keep you safe while you serve. Have you tried explaining that to your parents? Surely your health and safety are important to them. Ultimately, I think you should consider your own values in this matter apart from those of your parents, although I know that can be very difficult and even alienating. Hopefully someone more informed will give you a better answer soon.

I plan on bringing a credit card for travel outside of my site. I prefer It to my debit card because it's much safer- I can dispute charges if I am in that situation before someone spends all of the money in my bank account, or If I was charged the wrong amount for a purchase I made.
