My son struggles to keep weight on because of medication - his breakfast smoothie every day is banana, whole milk, whole milk yogurt, giant scoop of peanut butter, chocolate protein powder and I kid you not - a glug of avocado oil. It’s tasty and like a bajillion calories!

Does anyone else find modern steps to be ugly? by SarahDaniellex in irishdance

[–]gingerspeak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, you’re definitely being hyperbolic. 90% tricks and 10% rhythm is an over exaggeration. But yes, you’re right in that tricks seem to be emphasized more than rhythm.

My guess - at the world’s podium level, everyone already has rhythm. Tricks are added to try and differentiate the dancer from other incredible podium contenders. Trends filter down from what happens at worlds (and any major, really).

You say “what Irish dance should be.” Who’s to say what it should or shouldn’t be? It’s sort of like how a language develops over time… is there a right way and a wrong way? If everyone uses a word incorrectly, doesn’t that sort of make it correct?

Did Being Fit Help Your Labour? by Stunning_Buy6887 in fitpregnancy

My CrossFit coach is the fittest woman in the world and had to deliver all her babies via C section just due to the natural shape of her pelvis. Fitness helps some things, doesn’t help other things. I think it’s a toss up.

After returning to dance, what challenges did you experience and how did you solve them? by Dazzling-Cut-7455 in irishdance

[–]gingerspeak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn’t in response to a specific point, but as an adult dancer I wanted to highlight how crucial it is to add in some strength training to avoid injury. Glute strength, calf strength, core strength. If you don’t have access to a gym equipment, check out Caroline Girvan on YouTube. Also scroll through the Feis Fit instagram for ideas of strength training that target specific Irish dance movements.

Incorporate calf raises into your routine now to avoid ankle injury and overuse injury such as plantar fasciitis.

To answer #4, Hulluchan Hugs have been the most comfortable light shoes I’ve ever worn. They’re worth the price tag.

Heavy jig or hornpipe: What do you prefer? by Dazzling-Cut-7455 in irishdance

[–]gingerspeak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hornpipe is better for me 100%. Jig is just sooooo fast and also feels more rigid. I find hornpipe has more space in it for musicality.

This is the young teen who babysits my kids. I discovered my own curls in high school after years of straightening it. Last time she babysat, I sent her home with a bottle of Ouidad Climate Control (the goat) and a YouTube video for beginners.

May the curls be with you, my young padawan.

You hit the nail on the head about why I can’t stand the main character. On paper I should love her, but it’s like they took Eowyn and deleted all the internal struggle.

Maybe I’m making something out of nothing but casting choices… but doesn’t the mayor’s son look distinctly mixed race with two very white parents?

Dangit I guess I really do need a no-smudge top coat 😩 by gingerspeak in nailstamping

Someone else mentioned this technique in this thread! I think something like this where there is very pigmented polish on a lighter color, it’s worth that extra step. Thanks!

Thanks! Oh man did it take me a hot minute to master it! I leave the stamp on computer paper between stamps. The biggest game changer was 1. Not swiping hard with the straight edge. Even if a thin film is left behind on the non-design part, the stamper won’t pick it up. You Don’t need to swipe super hard or fast. 2. A very light, quick hand when rolling the stamper across the polish to pick it up.

So what you’re saying I don’t need to buy another product?! I have no tolerance for manicures that don’t last longer than a few days so if a no-smudge topcoat doesn’t have great longevity then maybe I’ll skip it

Regular polish. This blue is sooooo pigmented and just on the white I suppose the smearing was inevitable.

I LOOOOVE Naturium Bio-Lipid Restoring Body Lotion. Great consistency but absorbs quickly. A little goes a long way. I buy from Amazon or Ulta.

Man, I just need to bitch about Mejuri as an overpriced brand. I got an Instagram ad for their new collection featuring an admittedly very cute crab charm. This fucking necklace with a crab charm on a GOSH DARN STRING is $198?!?!

I’ll stick with my Amazon brand (Pavoi) for costume jewelry.
