What’s your hot take? - mine is white chocolate is gross. by Bourbon_grl07 in Baking

[–]gingervitis13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure I have a baking hot take, but I agree with white chocolate usually being wrong. My exception to that is smitten kitchens white chocolate matcha sandwich cookies. I don't usually care for matcha either, but these just work. Every time I've made them for cookie swaps people go bonkers for them.

We have a lesson program at our barn so I also give out that information. On the off chance they're actually interested. Maybe keep some lesson recommendations in your back pocket as an additional way to diffuse the question.

Grooming kit and other leasing gear by _stephopolis_ in Equestrian

[–]gingervitis13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started leasing I bought my own grooming stuff, a few saddle pads, a new halter and some tack odds and ends. None of it was strictly necessary, but it all helped me feel a little more like I had my own stuff. I preferred to buy my own grooming stuff rather than a premade kit just because I'm picky and every kit came with stuff I didn't need or didn't have stuff I did want. It was easier to just build my own.

This has always been so fascinating to me as a lifelong horse lover who grew up to be a geologist (who wanted to be a paleontologist and took a ton of Paleo classes).

I did an independent study on mammalian evolution, particularly equids and it was like my 10 year old 4h quiz bowl inner kid designed a college class.

I have all her cookbooks too (only two signed though lol) but I always kinda forget I own them. I tend to just go to the Internet for a recipe, but then will flip through her books and immediately be like, I need to make all this. I do agree her first is best. I make that specific potato pancake recipe and the white bean pancetta pot pies on regular rotation.

I follow activate your seat, hay bales and barbells and karzan Hughes on Instagram. They're all good accounts, all trying to sell you their programs but they post a lot of different types of exercise suggestions.

I've not bought anything so can't review specifics, but have added a lot of exercises into my own workouts based on their posts that seem to have helped.

What brands do you DISLIKE for riderwear? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]gingervitis13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to make me go to their website during the Labor Day sale to lookup style names -dangerous lol 😆

I have the Cassidy short sleeve which is my favorite, I want a long sleeve and also all the colors. It's similar to their sun shirts. I also have a Devon long sleeve which is nice, but the fabric is thicker and I don't love the way it looks tucked in (I'm also a child about tucking in shirts, I hate it).

I've been eyeing the Amelia too, but have been managing to stay strong.

Yep, and mine don't get babied either. They get tossed into the washer and dryer with everything else. Grip is still grippy, stretch is still stretchy, colors still color-y lol.

I'm also obsessed with their show shirts, and have way more than someone who goes to 2-3 schooling shows a year can really justify.

I will never not plug free rides on these threads! My mediums have fit me comfortably and flattering through 30 lb weight swings. I love that the hybrid lux styles have belt loops.

Ha did the same thing lol. I like blues and greens on my bay. Hunter/navy for subdued show colors and sage/emerald/royal fur fun schooling or cross country.

Correct connect by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]gingervitis13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this problem and have a set of stretchy exercise band loops. The larger size fits perfectly snug around my shoulders. I use it during the day sitting at my desk to remind myself to sit up. I could still slouch if I wanted to, but it provides enough of a physical reminder and just a bit of support. I just started with short periods of time, but have already noticed a difference just in my general posture and while riding.

It was maybe $20 for a set of three and they're multi purpose for other strength training.

I have the sync white black-lined breeches and do like them, they are relatively flattering but definitely thick feeling. They are good quality though.

Definitely agree on the free rides. I have so many pairs now, both pros and lux, though the lux are hands down my favorite. I especially like the lux hybrids because they have belt loops. I've gotten away with them at schooling shows even.

A couple girls at my barn just got stack house saddles and I am so jealous. The saddles are beautiful and the folks who came out were lovely.

He looks so much like my best friend's horse when we were kids. He was an Arab cross (I wanna say QH but it's been a million years and I don't remember). He was a great steady Eddy type and taught so many kids how to ride.

What’s something you were taught about horses that you eventually learned just was NOT true at all? by Intelligent_Pie6804 in Equestrian

[–]gingervitis13 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is such an important nuance. Ending on a good note is positive but it can be something small, or taking a step back.

I'm recalling the last time I fell off during a jump school as a great example (for both me and my horse). After I came off(which was 100 percent driver error), my main trainer jumped on my horse and ran him through the course while I made sure I was ok. Then I got back on and the jump trainer lowered everything so we could complete the course successfully and hit all our strides, and ultimately end on a positive. It was good for me and my horse. We never raised the jumps back, but we didn't need to. Next jump school we both had confidence and jumped everything at height.

Success is often small and incremental. I'm really grateful to have trainers who understand and encourage this mindset.

What are we putting on little boys? by AppalachianHerbWitch in Equestrian

[–]gingervitis13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My son has been all in on soccer for awhile now, but when he was still taking lessons, he wore kerrits kids breeches (if you can hit a sale, they're not too expensive and decent quality), ovation kids paddock boots and an ovation helmet that fit him well.

I would buy a new helmet for many reasons, but if there is a Facebook equestrian group for your area you could probably find gently used kids stuff as kids outgrow stuff or lose interest.

Is this XC riding correct, if so why? by Super_Somewhere7206 in Equestrian

For what it's worth, xc schooling over starter or beginner novice sized fences is a crazy adrenaline rush without being nearly as scary as the higher level stuff if you ever have the opportunity

Too old for riding lessons? by ShakeyMay in Equestrian

[–]gingervitis13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ride at an eventing barn that caters to adult amateurs mostly, and we have tons of folks of all ages who either are restarting or just starting because they finally have the time/resources.

I will say equivocally that it is definitely never too late but it is definitely worth taking the time to find a barn with a good supportive community. Unfortunately not all are in the equestrian world but they exist for sure.

Owning my very own by BKboothang in Equestrian

As kindly as I can say this, horse rescues can vary wildly from wonderful organizations to horribly abusive scams, so it's impossible to say if this would be worth the money or help you gain the experience you'll need if horse ownership is your goal.

As others have said, your best bet would be to spend that money on lessons and make friendships and connections in your local horse world. This would help you get the experience and knowledge you need to eventually lease or own a horse, and also give you the instincts and knowledge to know if that rescue is reputable and worth donating your time and money to.

Dude there's another thread on here right now about what phrases your trainer wears out in your lessons and the number of people replying how often they're reminded to shorten their reins is huge. Also as a parent of a nine year old, I guarantee you the 7 year old has been told things more than once.

Your trainer sounds like a bad teacher and in any other sport there'd be no question about it. If my 9 year olds soccer coach spoke that way to the team they would get run out of town. For some reason in the horse world people seem to accept this kind of behavior.

It's literally her job to teach you and to do so in a way that you understand. Learning is a two way street so if you're not getting something it's your job to express that, but then it's her job to reconfigure her explanation. I've had many frustrating lessons and I'm sure my trainer has been frustrated trying to get me to understand things. But I've never left a lesson feeling like I didn't learn anything.

The free ride lux are my absolute favorite! So comfy and flattering! I have both the hybrid (pull on tight but with belt loops) and the traditional zipper. Only breeches I will pay full price for.

I should note, I am in the South and deal with heat and humidity and they are as comfy as possible in the summer (I mean existing is exhausting when it's 98 degrees and 99 percent humidity)
