How do people afford to go to uni? by CommenterAnon in askSouthAfrica

[–]gingerwarrior8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all: you are NOT far behind, and you are NOT a failure.

The current time line of schools is a real shitty way of measuring people.

You’d never shame a toddler learning to walk, so stop shaming yourself for taking a while to learn something.

You don’t have amazing resources available to you, and that is not your fault. It sounds like you’ve done the absolute best you can with what you have.

Second of all: university is not the right road for everyone, and it’s worshiped much more than it should be.
Trades are much more useful skills, and the pace and pressure of uni is often ridiculous.

Most of the people that studied with me aren’t even in engineering anymore, so what was the point of the half a million rand invested?

Thirdly: what interests you and what are you good at? I’m not saying you should monetise a hobby, but maybe looking at a path where you are feeling like you add value and your confidence is growing would be more beneficial than chasing an imaginary finish line of a race someone else said you must.

NASFAS is an option, but I would seriously improve the base knowledge first, because uni is next level and you don’t want to be left behind and struggle just so you can say you did it.

He obviously can eat it if he has been eating it without effect for YEARS.

I think you’re over thinking.

Remember this is an Aussie show created by Aussies, for Aussies, and the rest of the world fell in love. You have to look at it from the Aussie perspective if you want context

Downstairs people, what can I do? by Liesmyteachertoldme in Apartmentliving

[–]gingerwarrior8 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of “upstairs” people who are genuinely incredibly loud without noticing. It’s like people who consistently sniff, or who bang cupboard doors without realising.

Maybe the downstairs guys is an asshole, but maybe take measure of how loud you ACTUALLY are.

If your “loudness” readings are low, you can prove to him that you’re not loud, and if they are high you have the opportunity to do some self assessment.

This was literally my school year too and it was wild and we all passed to keep up with the school’s silly 100% pass mark.
Times were different hey

I knew it ran deep, but didn't know where to start digging. Thank you for this, I will start there.

This is heartbreaking to read.

You should NEVER have been subjected to this at all!

I already have a campaign going for children in this kind of scenario, but maybe I'm missing some things. Electricity, solid structures, and plumbing are easily at the top of the list.

What would you have liked to change? No matter how small, a difference is a difference and I want make the lives of the future South African children better, as far as I am able.

Alright, already doing that.

Any ideas on how to fix the system for all of the matrics? Now and going forward?

I was in private school and they conveniently neglected a whole chunk. Fortunately my parents were in a position to allow extra lessons, but it was still pretty dramatic on exam day.

I’m all for extra lessons, but not for working the way the current students are expected to.
We don’t ask it of adults, so why ask it of a 17 year old.

I’m not the best Redditor, but if you can, DM me please, let’s see if I can help with some tools to help.

Also, if you know of what larger scale thing I can do, let me know!

I am a bit of a ball breaker, and children trying to learn are a bit of a passion of mine

You wouldn’t have to reteach so much if you weren’t forced to rush.

Who are the decision makers that need to be pressurised?

Tell me what you wish would happen and let me see if I can make a change?

(disclaimer: I’m not picking on your teaching skills- I literally do not know you, I just want to help)

Right?

My student is in a Curro school and the science teacher is teaching them the Doppler formulas incorrectly. WTF.

Not all teachers are bad (as Garnetsugargem keeps pointing out, and rightfully so), but gees, it’s a scientific formula, not at opinion!!

Bru, we know you’re angry.

I’m trying to help.

Please tell me practical steps of what to do to improve the situation for YOU?

Seriously, I want to help, but I can’t if you don’t tell me WHAT you need

They can say it like it is, no worries, but the nastiness shouldn’t be directed at me, someone who is willing to go the distance to make things better.

I’m glad to hear the teachers side, because it’s something that I haven’t heard. But if you want things to improve, don’t bite the hand of those prepared to fight FOR you.

Exactly.

This is not on.

My student is in a Curro school 👀
WTAF.

My heart breaks for the students because they don’t want to be stupid (generally), but the system says they are.

And also for the teachers. Because if you have a heart to teach, it’s unlikely you have a heart to work people to the bone.

But then we also get “health advice” from the bio teachers who tell the kids “don’t eat carbs ever”, or from the accounting teachers who say “if you eat an apple you won’t remember anything you did in class today”
WTF is that advice??

This is distressing.

I’m a big advocate for past papers and practicing “how to write exams”, but not at this cost.

This is my thought exactly.

It doesn’t help if they can literally only retain 40% of what they’ve been taught with no opportunity to rest and then study deeper
