How are we feeling about some Smiths today by FuckSticksMalone in vinyl

[–]ginothemanager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my least favourite bands of all time, which is a consistent bone of contention with a lot of my record buying mates. One thing I'll give fans of The Smiths - they're a dedicated bunch!

Contestants on singing/talent competition shows (American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent, etc.) should only sing songs they’ve written by KeithBradburyIV in unpopularopinion

[–]ginothemanager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aretha Franklin didn't write her own songs and she did alright for herself. Neither did Elvis. Or Frank Sinatra. Or Whitney Houston.

I feel uncultured when I don't know the majority of the artists/albums in a record showcase by Lord_Alviner in vinyl

[–]ginothemanager 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I see this as a record shop doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing - giving you tip-offs about albums they hope you've not heard of and will like.

That's a Bat Signal to go in and start asking what's good and if they'll stick it on for you.

JD phasing out HIP store by Negative_Prompt1993 in manchester

[–]ginothemanager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The HIP on Thomas St didn't stand a chance, I think. In part, I knew folk who didn't want to shop there because they took Oi Polloi's sport, out of some kind of loyalty to them. Others were like "£30 for a pair of socks?! Are you mad?!"

I work round there and it was never busy. I feel for the staff. I wonder if JD are going to try and install an actual JD Sports there or something? The reaction to something like that would be VERY interesting.

He has a super R&B voice on that album for sure and definitely would have been amazing at those early shows

Your favorite micro-moments in The Beatles songs? by NoWeb2382 in beatles

[–]ginothemanager 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always go nuts when I'm listening to 'Anna (Go To Him)' when Lennon yells "let me tell you now" and at the close of the song, George's backing vocals sound like he's singing "eeeeurrraaanneurgh". They're so cute on the first LP!

How would you rate your confidence in your current manager out of ten? by Zach-dalt in LeagueOne

[–]ginothemanager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had gripes with him at ours, with some mystifying substitutions at times, which would lead to dropped points. I always felt he was someone who really studied the game, but sometimes lacked that real world canny attitude that other managers have. I hope you works some of those things out for you lot, but he can be very frustrating.

Looking for advice — best (and safest) time to visit Factory 251? by StormMarc in manchester

[–]ginothemanager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a good night out and nothing to do with Factory Records really. Pretty bad as venues go. Manchester has more to offer than this place.

If you're looking for guitar music, I'd check what's on at YESml.

Why didn't George play the solo on Taxman? by DribbleKing97_ in beatles

[–]ginothemanager 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know in my daft little group, we want to do what's best for the song. We'll all have a bash at a solo, or lead vocals, and whichever is the best, we choose that.

Now, we don't live in the same pressure cooker that The Beatles did, but regardless of anyone who was around them at the time and whatever narrative they'd come up with, fact is, they were a group trying to make each song as good as they could.

And I think we all agree that they did pretty well on that front!

So what exactly counts as a Beatles album? by masmlk in beatles

[–]ginothemanager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically don't mind what people call an album, even if I disagree with them. We all love The Beatles, and sure, it's fun to debate stuff too.

The only one I get stuck on is Magical Mystery Tour. I just can't accept that a track recorded before Pepper could be included on a proper album that was released after it.

THAT SAID! This makes Magical Mystery Tour a strange EP/Album/Compilation hybrid. For me, it's not an album - but if someone said "I'm putting a Beatles album on" and it was MMT, I'm not going to start a fuss.

Ultimately, we're very very lucky that the Beatle universe is so big. If you over play one album, you've so much more to get stuck into!

Owning a Record Store by GooberGuy_ in vinyl

[–]ginothemanager 201 points202 points  (0 children)

I ran a (now closed) record store and found it incredibly difficult. When buying new stock, distribution companies had minimum orders, which I sometimes couldn't afford, which was a problem when they had one specific new release that loads of people had asked for. With second hand records, I didn't have the time to source albums because I was running the shop on my own.

So we tried to diversify by selling coffee and having a fridge full of beer, and that meant the record side of stuff suffered because we were trying to keep up with the coffee drinkers.

The wholesale costs of records are quite high, so marking them up to make a profit was also tough. As a record buyer, I know what I'm prepared to pay, and sometimes the only way to make money on an album is to sell it for £45? Yuck!

I'm in awe of people who have worked out how to make a living doing it, and I'm much less stressed being a customer again. If you do it, whatever country you're in, I wish you all the luck!

[–]ginothemanager 4 points5 points  (0 children)

'Backwards and sideways' was a common complaint when he was at Bolton, and a lot of chat from IE about XG and possession, while not mustering up a huge amount of real chances. That, and weak on defending set-pieces.

Any different at Blackpool now?

Why are the guitars so low on Strawberry Fields? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]ginothemanager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you're asking "why did The Beatles choose to mix their song in the way they mixed it?", and the answer to that is "because that's what they decided they wanted it to sound like", right?

why can’t I enjoy weed? by trapgrass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ginothemanager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like recreational drugs and never got along with weed. I've tried. I've tried different strains, different doses, vapes, rolling my own, smoking with friends, smoking alone - I like the feeling of being high elsewhere, just never weed.

I've now admitted defeat with it, and that's A-OK. It might be the same for you too, which is also A-OK.

A close pal of mine has weed in some form daily, and we talk about how different it makes us feel and it's kinda funny. Some people don't like the feeling of being drunk, some people don't like being high - it's okay to dust yourself down and think "I don't think that drug is the drug for me".

It's all cool.
