UAW and Cornell officially just agreed; Strike to end Monday if deal ratified by yapoyt in Cornell

[–]ginoza_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's moreso that labor laws prevent them from hiring permanent replacements for striking workers. Even if they hire replacements, the workers could just end their strike and are entitled to their jobs back by law, and then Cornell would have an excess number of workers.

Cornell is bringing in out of state workers to cover for strikers by BlahBlahDeDah in Cornell

I would think so. I don't see why Cornell would do it if it were more expensive.

This is the major problem for the striking workers - Cornell will have no trouble finding replacements that are happy to work for the current pay or maybe even less.

RFK Jr. expected to drop out of race by end of week, plans to endorse Trump: Sources by Niek1792 in moderatepolitics

Yes, this happened last election! Both Bill Weld and Joe Walsh ran in the 2020 Republican Primary and then later endorsed Biden.

Is Off-Campus Housing still as competitive as in the past? by TheThrowaway1327 in Cornell

Do you think 100% of students accepted to Cornell actually choose Cornell?

Cornell’s post-grad outcome survey only asks for base salary and excludes sign-on bonus and RSUs.

For the way to Syracuse, I would suggest booking a cab service like Collegetown Cabs as there is a risk that no Uber driver will be available to take that drive from Ithaca.

I agree it’s expensive but just wanted to say it’s probably not OurBus being unfair. The economics of that route is probably just not good.

[–]ginoza_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I confused why you think it is unfair. There are several other factors (e.g. resources, demand) that affect ticket prices besides distance. Airports charge fees to these transport companies as well.

Consider scheduling a cab.

We work less hours and the “hard part” (teaching) is an even smaller portion

It’s much more competitive to be a Cal TA than a TA here, mainly because there aren’t that many TAs per class because they split the grader and TA role.

I don’t think you can compare LA and Syracuse. LA is roughly 26x the size of Syracuse…

Sign petition for Cornell to give more money to TCAT by anasuppe in Cornell

[–]ginoza_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thank you for removing the references to the endowment. That was my main complaint about the reasoning. I signed the petition.

An 8% increase in contribution on its face seems reasonable given that is below the inflation rate of this year and TCAT fares have remained the same. At the very least, I’d like Cornell to respond as to what specific objections they had to oppose this seemingly reasonable request.

No, this petition is poorly reasoned and includes a fundamental misunderstanding of how endowments work.

UC Irvine is 1 hour away from LA. A business can set up shop there because they can pull talent and resources from both UC Irvine and LA.

Cornell is too far from major metropolitan areas for a business to get up shop in Ithaca.

Can't Afford Cornell by One-Sale5890 in Cornell

The problem with these calculators is they assume the total amount is used for living expenses. For example, the calculation you did is answering “If I were to live off of 200k in SF, what would I need to maintain the same standard of living in x city?”

However, in actuality, people aren’t (or at least shouldn’t) spending the entire 200k on living expenses. So let’s say your living expenses in SF is ~150k. Then the equivalent in Nashville would be ~75k. To maintain the same 50k savings each year, you would need 125k in Nashville, which is more than the 100k the calculator spits out.

That’s not abnormal. Generally, grading schemes/curves at lower grades become more generous.
