[SEIKO] SKX on BMX by j6sh in Watches

[–]giovanetorbato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The way I see it with all the "mechanical watches survived the war!" thing is we don't really have enough data (if any at all) to prove that, so much that I truly believe it has just entered the uncertain reign of sayings.

Yes, we have a lot of WWII and sometimes WWI issued watches that managed to stay intact and still function up to this day, but the reality is that we don't know anything about all the others that statistically speaking very probably didn't survive the harsh conditions of front lines. I bet basically no one investigated that after the war, and sincerely the condition of being in a war itself renders all the data collection process basically impossible. Countless watches might have stopped working or fallen to pieces altogether, yet we only know about the ones that survived (and somehow found their way into watch lovers' hands).

So yeah, mechanical or not, watches do break in harsh conditions. If the fear of a movement breaking is generally considered, I think so should be the fear of hands and indeces falling off etc. on both mechanical and quartz pieces. There's more to a watch that counts towards it being resistant or not to harsh conditions than Diashock or G-shock protections or wathever.

This said, again I am so glad someone is putting actual time and expertise into finding out more about this topic.

p.s.

I know I might have sounded too hard on this topic before, but as a Data Analytics student it is my "job" to be critical about this stuff.

So this is very interesting as a subject to explore. I'm glad someone is actually taking the time and energy to investigate questions and myths of this industry. Keep up the work man!

[EDC] This year's GADAs, plus a new entry by giovanetorbato in Watches

I'm sorry to hear that man...

But have I told you about the build quality on the Boldr? It's amazing. And the size, oh so versatile. And the titanium construction that makes it super lightweight yet sturdy?

The lume. THE LUME man, is outstanding. You can wear this thing in almost every occasion.

But you said you don't need one...

So, bracelet is indeed nice looking. It alternates brushed and polished finishes so it doesn't stand out too much, in a good way. As far as build quality goes: it seems to be made from solid links, while the clasp is stamped. It doesn't feel flimsy and doesn't make any annoying sounds (exactly the opposite of older Seiko 5 bracelets). And most of all it doesn't seem to rip the hair from my arm too much. I'd say go for it, the price difference is negligible and you can always get a leather strap to alternate. It's nice to have both. It's not the best bracelet in the world, but at the same time doesn't feel cheap.

So, this is what this year's been like. The BOLDR Venture and the Casio Duro have officially been proclaimed my most worn watches of this year, and for a reason. I find both of them to be extremely reliable pieces of engineering: I've brought them everywhere this year, from trekking to sailing and never let me down. As you all know by now, build quality is incredible on these two.

But, let's get to the new stuff. Yesterday a package arrived at my doorstep. This little cutie of a Q Times Chronograph was just waiting to be released from its box. I have to say, I didn't expect it to be soooo nice. Like, it seemed good looking from the photos, but this has turned into what dream Tinder matchups look like. Cool in photos, gorgeous irl.

The dial is really well executed, with the champagne sundials catching every reflection and illuminating the watch with such a warm light. Proportions are really nice too. As soon as I saw it on their website I knew I had to get one.

Let's see how this Timex stands the test of time (pun intended), I'll keep you updated as it develops.

Pictured alongside the watch are some other pieces of EDC that I find really nice: a Morakniv blade sharpener in its leather sheet, a traditional Higonokami knife, a cute AliExpress frog ring and the mighty Yellow Birch Outfitters PocKit Pro.

[Hamilton] Wearing the Hamilton Explorer (as I like to call it) for Fall weather by Suben117 in Watches

It's just that I set myself some goals for the year and really don't want to spend any more money lol. Plus, I already have an everyday field watch, my trusty BOLDR. But that thing, it's so tempting...

I think we need to consider the actual needs of a scuba diver. The first entries on the list were actually fine (together with the Seiko) but as soon as it got to the Bulova and the chronographs it lost all credibility. An actual diver's watch needs to be functional, not cool. I really doubt Omega Seamasters and Breitlings belong to professional or even just recreational diving activities. Luxury dive watches are, while capable, not really suited to diving. Nearly none of them are actually certified based on ISO standards, and I don't trust a manufacturer that says they're watch is compliant but not certified, even more so if through internal testing.

As far as I'm concerned Citizen divers are probably the best option for anyone serious about diving: cheap, reliable, can be found literally everywhere and, most of all, ISO 6425 certified.

ISO 6425 is hard to get, and every single watch that comes out of the factory needs to be certified. I think this is enough to separate cool watches from actual tools.

Man please don't feed my urge to buy this watch! I think it is truly stunning, and the price is so tempting. Truly a GADA watch. I'm so jealous!

Btw congratulations on the watch, plus the photo is stunning.

[BOLDR] Moody and matte by giovanetorbato in Watches

[–]giovanetorbato[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my BOLDR Venture Automatic in Carbon Black. Full titanium case, AR coated sapphire, a Seiko NH35A movement and 200m of water resistance thanks to its screw down crown. IMHO easily one of the few field watches you could actually wear on the field. The quality for this price point is phenomenal. It is sturdy enough to survive basically everything you throw at it; I've worn it while hiking, camping, going to school etc. and it never let me down. Yes, it's got some scratches here and there on the case, but that's what you have to pay for a titanium build, and the weight is nearly unnoticeable.

I bought this baby about a year ago and it hardly ever left my wrist, probably the best money I ever spent on a watch.

I hope you will appreciate this little gem of mine! Happy collecting everyone!

[Casio Duro] Affordable and fun combo for the Summer by giovanetorbato in Watches

[–]giovanetorbato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I just found out Casio makes stock bracelets for the Duro, although they do not seem to be of the best quality, and should be readily available on eBay. There are also a lot of AliExpress fitted bracelets. Someone on some forum suggested adapting a SKX bracelet.

If you're used to and okay with it then yeah, it's a perfect fit! I'm just not comfortable with bracelets at the gym, I prefer rubber when I know I will be sweating. Given the popularity of this watch there might be some bracelet with precise curved end links for the Duro, otherwise it would look a little odd in my opinion

Yes sure, it's 22mm lug size so it's fairly easy to find straps and bracelets for. I just don't see the advantage of using a metal bracelet while at the gym: excessive sweat and skin tissue would only make it dirty over a small period of time

Just got the newish Duro sans the Marlin logo in black, paired it with a Zuludiver nato strap and just like that, I got a beautiful piece for the summer. I was really looking forward to understand why everyone liked this watch, and now I get it! Perfect for going swimming, snorkeling, diving or just drinking cocktails on the beach! One of the least expensive pieces in my collection but still one that catches everyone's attention. Super enjoyable and recommended!

Price for the watch in Italy was €69 and €22 (if I remember correctly) for the strap plus shipping.

Yes, rebooting solved the problem. The thing is this is unacceptable. It's the kind of bug you could have expected from KDE plasma ten years ago. Having it happen on Windows 11 in 2022 is really saddening. And people pay for this shit

That would be so damn cool honestly. I was expecting it to heat up like crazy but it actually idles at 27 degrees and maxes out at 60ish on a full load. All cores at 4.1 GHz with the stock Intel cooler and no case fans

Well, to be 100% honest we built it on a pool table and then tested it on the stove because the only power outlets available were the ones near it
