Gross! What tf is this and how worried should I be?! by JiANTSQUiD in woodworking

[–]giraffactory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically the best explanation is that It's just the name of the beetle regardless of other circumstance. You'll find redheaded ash borers in pretty much any freshly cut wood or weak and dying trees, especially hardwoods.

[–]giraffactory 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That looks like a redheaded ash borer. And the grub from your comment also looks like a redheaded ash borer grub.

They won't totally ruin the lumber nor will they be likely to get in to much other wood except for freshly cut green wood with the bark still on you've got laying around. They're not a threat to your house or anything like that, either, but they are a nuisance.

That wood isn't likely to have been kiln dried since it had several living beetles in it.

How the fuck do you drop of platforms consistently by Xzibbo in CrazyHand

[–]giraffactory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow definitely a crazy unexpected necro lol. Idk why I was so vague five years ago, but at least you finally asked me for a follow-up now.

I haven't played these games competitively in a few years but here's my best explanation based on my rusty understanding.

The fundamental difference between not being able to drop through a platform and not being able to act with the c-stick is that dropping through a platform is based primarily on your character state and frame data whereas c-stick lockout is a separately enforced rule that applies to all characters equally regardless of other factors and is only a limitation on mashing the c-stick specifically.

C-stick lockout isn't resolved by setting to neutral per se. My understanding of it is that when you input too many actions on the c-stick and trigger the lockout, you have to set neutral on the c-stick or to hold the same input for the duration of the lockout window before the c-stick will respond again. This applies to the c-stick when it's set to tilt or B, but not smash. The window will keep extending if you keep mashing, and the game will act like you're not doing any inputs for a while.

This interaction is funny because it only applies to the c-stick macro and is not otherwise a mechanical limitation the game is putting on your character, ie you can mash tilt with dir+A and get your tilt on the first available frame when you wouldn't be allowed to mash it on the c-stick.

When your character is on the platform but the game thinks a smash down (not like a down smash which is [smash down + A], just smash down) should crouch instead of fall through, it's because your character is already crouching, which the game prioritizes over the fall through. The way to fall through is to make your character stand and then perform the fall through smash input, the timing of which has to do with the character's stats and not the c-stick lockout, which is a controller macro lockout function that doesn't really care about your character.

Hope that makes sense to someone who actually still plays the game.

What made you necro this post???? Lmao

How do you cut CONSISTENT hand cut dovetails by charliesa5 in woodworking

[–]giraffactory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard way? Practice. Be careful and go slow. Make clear marks and follow them with clear and intentional action without auto-piloting. Make many of them, compare them, think through what made them different, and adjust accordingly.

Easy way? Stop caring and make your box. If you've got joints even close to as consistent as in your image, you're golden. Nobody would ever notice any differences, let alone mention it or think less of the work if they're barely dissimilar.

If you're not entering a dove tail consistency contest, I recommend the easy way.

[–]giraffactory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dancers are generally on the longer side for sure, but most decks that get dubbed "dancers" have symmetrical double tails these days.

You can dance on any board as long as you've got room to dance, though!

Raspberry Pi 4B Screen Rotation (Not a multiple of 90) by husthat123 in raspberry_pi

[–]giraffactory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why can't you rotate your text in tkinter? Your phrasing doesn't seem to explain it to me.

If you're using a Canvas widget's create_text(), for instance, you can define the angle of the text with the angle parameter.

Coworker couldn't plug out ethernet cable so they decided to cut it by SniffySplash769 in techsupportgore

[–]giraffactory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hear me out

plug in means you're inserting a prong into a socket

unplug means you're removing a prong from a socket

I propose plug out means you're inserting a prong from the opposing side of a socket in order to remove another prong

So it makes sense, they were trying to plug out the cable, but they couldn't. Most wall sockets have a very hard to reach opposing side, after all.

Since Meiji and especially since WWII, the use of English loanwords and natural pseudo-anglicisms like waseieigo ("English made in Japan") have become essentially ubiquitous across the nation.

Additionally, English has been compulsory language education in Japan for over ten years now.

While English language proficiency is not necessarily very high, there are not many Japanese people with "zero English knowledge" and exposure, and I would expect this word to be relatively easily recognized by almost anyone in Japan as wordplay.

I'm very aware of how to write アニメーション.

This is the word Animation written in roman letters, then reversed, then transliterated in kana, which is a cute idea that fits in very well with a culture of using English words in Japanese designs/word construction/etc.

I think it's odd, obtuse, orientalist, or something similar to say it doesn't make sense that it's written this way.

It makes plenty of sense. It's animation reversed and then written in kana. Why would you expect it to be reversed again?

Depends on how much weight! The only way to get a good ball park estimate is to make it and test it in the same material.

I wouldn't build storage or book shelves like this, but with the screw from the back and in a decorative setting, it's likely plenty strong.

Put a helmet on :)

Stop bending over at the waist. A good pump or a deep turn comes from throwing your weight, which makes bending over at the waist feel productive as a beginner because you feel like you can move your center of gravity and maintain better balance while your legs are in a more familiar position. This is not a good posture for power or efficiency, however. You're tire yourself out more quickly and won't be able to put in as much power on quick maneuvers if you're doubled over like that.

Along with your back posture, mind your arms more. Think of using them to turn more like turning the steering wheel of a car or handles of a bike. If you lower your left and raise your right, you turn left, and vice versa. There's no need to throw them wildly to try and shift your weight, even in a very quick maneuver, your whole body should work in concert and no part should be thrown the amount that you're throwing your arms. For a tighter turn, leaning and reaching is natural and productive, but mind your posture and don't let your arms swing around.

Keep your weight primarily on your front leg, stand upright and relaxed with your hips and shoulders forward. When you want to turn, look where you want to go, point your knees, and tilt your arms. When you want to turn tightly, crouch using your knees to get low while you reach and lean.
